Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring (PAESMEM)

PAESMEM: STEM Mentors The purpose of the PAESMEM award is to recognize U.S. citizens and permanent residents and U.S. organizations that have demonstrated excellence in mentoring underrepresented students, trainees, and early career scientists and engineers. Established by the White House in 1995. Up to 16 awardees may be recognized each year.

PAESMEM: STEM Mentors Nearly 240 individuals and organizations have been recognized since the start of program. Recipients receive a trip to Washington, D.C., for recognition events, a certificate signed by the President, and a $10,000 award from NSF.

PAESMEM Eligibility Individuals and organizations in all public and private sectors are eligible: Industry Academia Primary and secondary education Military and government Non-profit organizations Foundations

PAESMEM Eligibility Individual nominees must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents Past individual PAESMEM awardees are not eligible for re-nomination Organizational nominees must be affiliated with a U.S. corporation, educational institution or agency, military or government agency, non-profit organization, or foundation Past organizational PAESMEM awardees may be renominated after 10 years

PAESMEM Eligibility (continued) At least 5 years of demonstrated and sustained exceptional mentoring of: Students; Trainees; and/or Early career scientists and engineers, from underrepresented groups in STEM. Groups that are underrepresented in STEM include: Women; People with disabilities; Underrepresented racial and ethnic minorities; Individuals from low socio-economic backgrounds; and Individuals from some geographic regions, such as urban and rural areas.

How do I nominate? To nominate, email PAESMEM@nsf.gov or Contact the nominee directly encouraging him/her/them to apply and submit a (proposal) nomination The PI is the nominee; the co-pi is the person submitting the nomination (in the event it is not the nominee)

Nomination Content Individual nominations Must include : 1) a mentoring philosophy (1-2 pages); 2) a description of the mentoring activities (up to 6 pages); 3) a resume or CV for the nominee (up to 2 pages); and, 4) between two and four letters of recommendation/support. Organizational nominations Must include: 1) a brief description of the organization (1 page); 2) a mentoring philosophy (1-2 pages); 3) a description of the mentoring accomplishments (up to 6 pages); 4) resumes or CVs for up to five organizational representatives (up to 2 pages each); and, 5) between two and five letters of recommendation/support.

Description of the Organization Organizational Nominations Only Information to give the reader an introduction to the organization (one page). Information on the organization, such as, but not limited to: Background and origins Vision and mission Partners and collaborators Funding and management Other relevant information

Mentoring Philosophy Both the Individual and Organizational nominations (one to two pages only). The mentoring philosophy should answer the following: What does mentoring mean to you? Why is your motivation and interest to mentor? Why do you think mentoring is important in STEM? Why do you think mentoring is important to individuals from groups underrepresented in STEM? Nominations should include references to literature and/or models that were used to develop the mentoring philosophy and style, where applicable.

Description of the Mentoring Activities Both the Individual and Organizational nominations (up to 6 pages). The description should explain how the nominee s mentoring activities are above and beyond those expected from other mentoring activities. For example, narratives may include: The description of the mentoring activities and strategies The number of years of mentoring experience The reason for targeting the chosen population of students, trainees, and/or early career scientists and engineers Innovative mentoring activities developed and implemented Other awards and recognitions received by the nominee, if applicable Description of how the mentoring activities were designed and tailored to meet the needs and interests of the mentees

Description of Mentoring Activities (continued) Data on mentoring outcomes should be included in the nomination submission. For example: The number and demographics of mentored students, trainees, and/or early career scientists and engineers. Do not include demographic information by name; aggregate demographic information is acceptable. Outcome information on mentees mentored such as: Academic achievement, retention, degree attainment Research productivity and mentoring activities Career placement and career satisfaction Promotion and attainment of leadership roles

Description of Mentoring Activities (cont d) For Individual nominees: Clearly delineate the achievements of the individual nominee as separate from achievements of his or her corporation, institution, agency or organization. Ensure that it is clear that the numbers provided are for those mentees that were personally mentored by the nominee. For Organizational nominees: Describe the organization's assessment of the mentoring activities

Review Criteria - Individual Impact: Are the impacts and outcomes of the mentoring outstanding? Significance: Are the mentoring accomplishments above and beyond what would be expected for other individuals in similar positions? Quality: How well has the nominee designed, tailored, and implemented the mentoring activities and strategies for the targeted mentees?

Significance: Are the mentoring activities and strategies regarded as exemplars and have potential for wider implementation? Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST)

PAEMST: STEM Teachers The Highest Recognition that a kindergarten through 12 th grade mathematics or science teacher may receive for outstanding teaching in the United States Established by Congress in 1983 The President may bestow up to 108 awards per year*

PAEMST: STEM Teachers *An award may be given to two teachers (ideally one math and one science) from: each of the 50 states, Washington D.C., Puerto Rico, Department of Defense Education Activity schools, and the US Territories as a group (US Virgin Islands, Guam, American Samoa, and Northern Mariana Islands).

PAEMST: STEM Teachers Awardees receive: A trip for two to Washington, D.C. for recognition events A certificate signed by the President A $10,000 award from NSF to be used at the awardee s discretion More than 4300 awardees have been recognized since inception.

An applicant must: Eligibility (for 2015) Teach mathematics or science (including computer science) as part of their contracted teaching responsibilities at the 7-12 th grade level in a public or private school. Hold at least a bachelor s degree from an accredited institution. Be full-time employees of the school or school districts as determined by state and district policies, with responsibilities for teaching students no less than 50 percent of the school s allotted instructional time. Have at least five years of full-time employment as a K-12 teacher during which mathematics or science (including computer science) has been a part of the applicant s teaching duties prior to the 2014-2015 academic school year.

An applicant must: Eligibility (for 2015) Con t Teach in one of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth or Puerto Rico, the Department of Defense Education Activity schools, or the U.S. territories as a group (American Samoa, Guam, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, and U.S. Virgin Islands). Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. Not have received the PAEMST award at the national level in any prior competition or category.
