4 North Carolina New Schools Every Student in North Carolina Graduates Ready for College, Careers and Life Education for a changed economy A new economy is emerging in North Carolina, one that demands workers with skills for the 21 st century, not for the 20 th. Even jobs for which high school was enough now often require more advanced training. More opportunity for more students North Carolina s continuing economic development and progress depends on ensuring that all students graduate high school and have access to postsecondary education. 4
5 What is NC STEP? A new lateral entry teacher certification program. Administered by NC New Schools Supported by the US Department of Education Approved by the NC State Board of Education Seeking to recruit and retain college graduates who are interested in becoming high school science, technology, engineering or math (STEM) teachers 5
6 What is NC STEP? We give our candidates A 15-month COST FREE program consisting of: A year-long internship in a NC New Schools network school (18 hours a week) Blended online coursework through WIDE World at the Harvard Graduate School of Education Professional development workshops and conferences through NC New Schools Coaching and mentoring through NC New Schools Integrated System of School Support Services (IS4) 6
7 Benefits to our Candidates Partner in increasing the number of teachers highly qualified in critical STEM content areas. Tuition, training costs, and materials paid in full $2500 stipend Mentor support throughout the 10- month internship $250 general materials supplement for classroom Support and guidance for completing licensure Lateral entry job placement assistance
8 What is NC STEP? The candidate gives back A three year commitment to teach under a lateral entry license in a high need district/school, While earning a salary and benefits as a full-time teacher Gaining a NC Professional Educator s License 8
9 Eligibility for NC STEP? Applicants must have experience in a science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) related field. Applicants should have an interest in becoming a teacher of STEM courses in a NC secondary school. Applicants who currently hold a teaching license are not eligible for the program. 9

15 Role of the Host District Support the host school in implementation of the STEP internship experience. Consider STEP candidates for teaching positions in 2014 and beyond. Participate as a member of the STEP Advisory Committee (quarterly meetings).
16 Role of the Host School Host 2-5 STEP interns per school year. Identify and support a team of mentors to provide guidance to the STEP interns. Integrate STEP interns into the life of the school. Participate in the interview and selection process for STEP interns. Participate in the mentor trainings and principal meetings.
17 Benefits to the District/School STEP interns could potentially become teachers in the district. School receives a mentor budget of $2500 per STEP intern. STEP interns bring real world practical applications. Partner in increasing the number of teachers highly qualified in critical STEM areas.
