Senior Women Academic Administrators of Canada (SWAAC) Graduate Student Award of Merit 3 potential awards Each award valued at $1000 Awarded to women graduate students who have demonstrated outstanding leadership in the university or general community while maintaining an exemplary academic record Recipients will be announced at the Annual Conference Eligibility: Women registered in Master s or Ph.D. programs at any Member Institution of AUCC within a designated region (includes MUN) Regions are defined as follows, and eligibility shall rotate among them: o Atlantic Provinces o Western Provinces o Ontario o Quebec Criteria: 1. Outstanding academic performance 2. The thesis must be one which is directly related to classroom practice. Its accompanying statement should be presented with clarity and insight so that the study's findings may be readily applied by classroom teachers and administrators of elementary and secondary schools. The thesis (for the current competition) must have been completed during the 2004 and/or 2005 calendar years. See website for full information: December

February 01 each year to Associate Dean for Graduate Programs in Education (for nominations to Dean, School of Graduate Studies, by February 15, and Canadian Institute of Ukrainian Studies, University of Alberta by March 01) The Fry Family Foundation Graduate Leadership Scholarship Awarded to a resident of Newfoundland and Labrador to support the completion of full-time graduate study in a Master s program at Memorial University of Newfoundland Awarded to a graduate student who has shown strong leadership skills, has demonstrated academic merit, and who has shown interest and leadership in areas such as international affairs, business, engineering and technology, science, politics, the media, etc. through their academic and work experiences. A strong commitment to Newfoundland and Labrador must be evidenced through the recipient s undergraduate program of study Value $25,000 for a maximum of two years full-time study leading to a master s degree Recipient of this award will commit to completing the full-time masters program which will include a minimum of one semester studying abroad on an academic exchange; and/or an international internship placement or other international program focusing on leadership, as approved by the Dean, School of Graduate Studies, on the recommendation of a special selection committee which will include a member of the Fry Family Foundation and various university personnel Application: o Special application form may be obtained from the School of Graduate Studies o Outline of the candidate s plan/program of study is required by all those wishing to be considered for this scholarship. o Applications include: a resume, two-page statement outlining the candidate s past experiences and future goals as they relate to Newfoundland and Labrador, a 500-word essay defining the candidate s personal definition of leadership, official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended, and two letters of reference.

Aldrich Award Endowed fellowships, six to eight per year, valued at $20,000 per year at the doctoral level and $15,000 per year at the master s level to incoming full-time Canadian students. Renewable for up to one year at the doctoral level Recipients of these fellowships are expected to contribute to the research and teaching mission of the University and will normally have tutorial, laboratory or other instructional and research responsibilities Recipients will be selected by the Dean of the School of Graduate Studies on the recommendation of the Awards and Medals Committee of the School of Graduate Studies, on the basis of exceptional academic achievement CAGS/UMI Distinguished Dissertation Award This award recognizes Canadian doctoral dissertations that have made an unusually significant and original contribution to their academic field. Eligibility: one in the engineering, medicine sciences and the natural sciences disciplines; and one for the humanities, social sciences and fine art disciplines. Value $1,5000 and expenses to attend CAGS Annual Conference Nominees must have completed their doctoral degree requirements within the specified time frame (e.g., the previous year). Member institutions may submit two nominations, one for each award. Each nomination must include: o a letter of support from the Dean of Graduate Studies, which also includes the following information: a. a description of the process used to select the nominee; b. the name and departmental affiliation of the nominee s research supervisor; c. the name and affiliation of the external examiner; d. the date of the defence and the date of final acceptance of the dissertation by the Graduate School o a letter from the students supervisor or program director describing the reasons for the nomination, and why the dissertation constitutes a significant piece of original work o a copy of the external examiner s pre-defence report, signed (or otherwise authenticated) by the Dean and dated o an abstract of the dissertation, not exceeding 350 words, written by the candidate in non-technical language o an up-to-date CV of the nominee Application deadline ca February 14 each year to Associate Dean for Graduate Programs in Education (for nominations to Dean, School of Graduate Studies, by February 28) Further information:

8 Awarded at Spring Convocation yearly (including graduates of previous Fall convocation) Awarded to a graduate student who has shown most leadership in student affairs during his or her university years, i.e., active leadership, interest and involvement in student life Application includes a current CV with outline of active involvement Application deadline ca. April 15 each year to Associate Dean for Graduate by April 30) Governor General s Gold Medal Awarded to a top Ph.D. candidate. (If no suitable Ph.D. candidate is nominated, the Governor General s Gold Medal may be awarded to a suitably qualified Master s candidate) Application deadline ca. April 15 each year to Associate Dean for Graduate by April 30) Eligibility: o all requirements for the degree completed, approval by Senate for the conferring of the degree and be eligible to graduate at the Spring Convocation or have graduated at the previous Fall Convocation Nominations must be made by letter and include the following: o A description of the program and, more particularly, of what is considered in defining high achievement, e.g. the relative importance of courses/thesis/oral defence/internship, etc. o The candidate s graduate transcript, his/her ranking in each graduate course completed and overall ranking in the program. o The candidate s ranking relative to other graduates of the program during the last five years. o Where appropriate: o A description of the nature of the thesis research work and its significance; o Copies of thesis examiners reports; o Peer-reviewed papers published and/or submitted during the program; o Other papers and presentations expected from or produced during the program; o A summary of progress during internship or other training in addition to courses and/or thesis; o Other awards and honors obtained; and o Dates of duration of the program and part-time/full-time status. University Medal for Excellence in an All-Course Master s Program Awarded to a top master s candidate
