Horizon2020 Data Management Plans Ma4 Harrison BGS

Data Management plan What is a Data Management Plan? A data management plan (DMP) describes what data that will be created, the standards used to describe the data (metadata), who owns the data, who can access the data, how long the data will be preserved (and/or made accessible), and what facili7es and equipment will be necessary to disseminate, share, and/or preserve the data. Why do we need a Data management plan? Funding agencies (e.g. EU in Horizon 2020) require a DMP to ensure availability of data over the long term Ethical Principle. Publicly funded research data are to be carefully acquired, disseminated and maintained because modern research builds on extensive scien7fic dialogue and advances by improving earlier work.

A further new element in Horizon 2020 is the use of Data Management Plans (DMPs) detailing what data the project will generate, whether and how it will be exploited or made accessible for verificadon and re- use, and how it will be curated and preserved. The use of a Data Management Plan is required for projects pardcipadng in the Open Research Data Pilot. Other projects are invited to submit a Data Management Plan if relevant for their planned research. Grant agreement / Pilot on Open Research Data in Horizon 2020 References to research data management are included in ArMcle 29.3 of the Model Grant Agreement (armcle applied to all projects parmcipamng in the Pilot on Open Research Data in Horizon 2020). Regarding the digital research data generated in the acdon ( data ), the beneficiaries must: (a) deposit in a research data repository and take measures to make it possible for third pardes to access, mine, exploit, reproduce and disseminate free of charge for any user the following: (i) the data, including associated metadata, needed to validate the results presented in sciendfic publicadons as soon as possible; (ii) other data, including associated metadata, as specified and within the deadlines laid down in the data management plan (see Annex I);

Relevant issues for a DMP in Horizon 2020. 1. What types of data will the project generate/ collect? 2. What standards will be used? 3. How will this data be exploited and/or shared/made accessible for verificamon and re- use? 4. If data cannot be made available, explain why. 5. How will this data be curated and preserved?

H2020 DMP Template Data set reference and name IdenMfier for the data set to be produced. Data set descrip7on DescripMon of the data that will be generated or collected, its origin (in case it is collected), nature and scale and to whom it could be useful, and whether it underpins a scienmfic publicamon. InformaMon on the existence (or not) of similar data and the possibilimes for integramon and reuse. Standards and metadata Reference to exismng suitable standards of the discipline. If these do not exist, an outline on how and what metadata will be created. Data sharing DescripMon of how data will be shared, including access procedures, embargo periods (if any), outlines of technical mechanisms for disseminamon and necessary so[ware and other tools for enabling re- use, and definimon of whether access will be widely open or restricted to specific groups. IdenMficaMon of the repository where data will be stored, if already exismng and idenmfied, indicamng in parmcular the type of repository (insmtumonal, standard repository for the discipline, etc.). In case the dataset cannot be shared, the reasons for this should be menmoned (e.g. ethical, rules of personal data, intellectual property, commercial, privacy- related, security- related). Archiving and preserva7on (including storage and backup) DescripMon of the procedures that will be put in place for long- term preservamon of the data. IndicaMon of how long the data should be preserved, what is its approximated end volume, what the associated costs are and how these are planned to be covered.

Data Management Planning " It is the right thing to do with publicly funded data " It is a tried and tested way to communicate your intenmons with your local friendly ICT professionals " It is likely already to be a requirement of many namonal funding agencies and/ or data repositories e.g. in UK NERC, EPSRC, ESRC " It should be a living system to communicate changes and requirements " It is a stepping- stone to enabling credit to be assigned to the dataset creators, and ensuring the discoverability, permanence and stability of the dataset and DOIs. " It is a REQUIREMENT of submission of ESFRI project proposals under H2020 and we will not be successful without DMPs
