APPLICATION PROCEDURES International Doctoral Degree Program Graduate School of Engineering TOYOHASHI UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY For the Academic Year 2015 Toyohashi University offers a special doctoral program conducted in English, which is open for overseas students seeking a degree in specific areas (Doctoral Degree in the field of engineering). 1. Admission Policy for Toyohashi University Toyohashi University is dedicated to the development of new standards in technological science by promoting education and research opportunities related to advanced technology and science. The university educates and nurtures students with the leadership skills to become leading researchers with in-depth technical knowledge and broad global perspectives. Applications are invited from highly motivated students with the following qualifications and traits: (1) An excellent master s degree (or its equivalent) based on research in technology and science. (2) Respect for humanity and the environment, and a willingness to contribute to the local and global community. (3) An enthusiasm and interest in technology and science. Admission Policies for Doctoral Programs I. Mechanical Engineering The goal of the Mechanical Engineering course is to nurture highly skilled researchers and engineers to play an active international role as leaders in their chosen area of engineering. We expect our graduates to use their professional knowledge and creative ability in mechanical engineering for the development of a sustainable society. Doctoral students considering enrolment in our course are required to display the following characteristics in their attitude towards research. (1) A sufficient knowledge in mechanical engineering and a desire to be a pioneer in this field of research. (2) A willingness to contribute to solve new global problems in society with a positive attitude and novel approach. (3) A desire to improve their ability to communicate so as to be effective on the international stage. (4) The desire to develop their abilities and character to become leaders of the future. II. Electrical and Electronic Information Engineering Our mission is to nurture students to become leaders with expertise in technology and science capable of contributing to the ICT society. With these objectives we welcome candidates with the following qualifications. (1) Candidates with highly specialized knowledge and problem solving abilities motivated to take up roles as leaders in Electrical and Electronic Information Engineering. (2) Candidates self-motivated to conduct research by themselves and the desire to enhance their leadership qualities. (3) Candidates with the desire to improve their communication skills in both English and Japanese in order to understand the implications of peripheral technologies to their main field of expertize. III. Computer Science and Engineering The Department of Computer Science and Engineering offers students a comprehensive and advanced 1

knowledge-base for research and development in this field. Furthermore, the graduate program aims to nurture highly skilled researchers to play central roles as global leaders capable of exploring new ideas and technologies in IT (Information Technologies), ICT (Information and Communication Technologies), and their application fields. We are looking for students who fulfil the following requirements: (1) Students who have highly specialized knowledge of IT and ICT and posess a strong motivation to work in leading-edge research fields. (2) Highly creative students with a passion to work on new research subjects which contribute to the development of science and technology. (3) Students who have the desire to improve their ability to communicate in both English and Japanese, and to understand the implications of their research and related technologies. (4) Students with a desire to become global leaders in their field of research. IV. Environmental and Life Sciences The Department of Environmental and Life Sciences offers rich educational curricula on environmental science, life science, and materials science. We seek to nurture graduates with the outstanding scientific capability and research skills to be recognized as leading scientists capable of playing an active role in developing pioneering technology necessary to construct a sustainable society. We also foster the skills required for conducting pioneering research in the fields of drug discovery and nanotechnology. Furthermore, our department aims to nurture graduates capable of publishing high level research results with a global reach, utilizing internationally recognized communication skills. In order to achieve these goals, candidates are expected to possess the following academic requirements and characteristics: (1) A strong desire to be involved in pioneering and applied research in the field of environmental science, life science, and materials science with a strong background of master-course level knowledge. (2) A clear aim to be involved in innovative research and invention in environmental science, life science, and materials science, and to become an internationally leading engineer or scientist. (3) A strong will to acquire internationally recognized communication skills. (4) The desire to contribute to society through innovative research as becoming a leading engineer and scientist. V. Architecture and Civil Engineering The Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering aims to train leading engineers with extensive knowledge and excellent practical abilities for architecture and civil engineering, and higher grade research engineers who can accomplish pioneering technological research as world-wide leaders. In order to achieve these goals, the department welcomes students with the following qualities: (1) Students with an interest in a wide range of issues related to natural environments, social systems, culture and human life, and motivation to seek solutions to problems related to these issues. (2) Students with expertise in architecture and civil engineering, and a desire to conduct pioneering research in these areas. (3) Students with a desire to achieve a higher level of global communication ability. (4) Students with creative ideas and the ability to be actively involved in the search for solutions to difficult problems. 2

Qualifications for application This program is open to those candidates who have no legal limitation or hindrance to be admitted to the University under the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act of Japan, and also to those pertaining to any of the following items from (1) to (4), and correspond to (5) and (6). (1) Those who have a master's degree or a professional degree. (2) Those who have obtained a qualification equivalent to a master's degree or a professional degree. (3) Those who took a course by overseas correspondence education while staying in Japan, and have acquired a qualification equivalent to a master's degree or a professional degree outside Japan. (4) Those who have obtained a qualification equivalent to a master's degree or a professional degree after completing a course at his/her educational institution which has a graduate school approved by his/her country s government, and which is recognized as eligible by the Japanese Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. (5) Those who are healthy, both physically and mentally. (6) Those who have English proficiency to keep up with the classes offered in this course. Above; TOEIC 590, TOEFL(IBT) 61, TOEFL(CBT) 173, TOEFL(PBT) 500 is preferable. 4. Application procedure (1) Submission period From May 25, 2015 to May 29, 2015 *Those applicants enrolled in Toyohashi University International Master s Degree Program in 2013 and wishing to take this Doctoral Program continuously (In-school admission) should submit the application within this period, too. (2) Application documents submitted to: International Affairs Division Toyohashi University 1-1 Hibarigaoka, Tempaku-cho, Toyohashi, Aichi, 441-8580 JAPAN (3) Application documents (All documents must be written in English) 1 Application Form for Admission to Toyohashi University Each student must fill out the designated form by themself. Applicants must not indicate their prospective supervisor's name at Toyohashi University of Technology without obtaining his/her prior approval. 2 ID Photo The photo must be of upper body (above waist, L40mm x W30mm) with no hats, and not older than 3 months prior to this application. Attach the photo to the designated area. The applicant's name and nationality must be written on the rear of the photo. 3 Certificate of Completion of Master s Degree The certificate must be issued by the last university where the applicant graduated (a diploma, a 3

graduation prospect, or a statement of a degree attained). 4 Records of Academic Achievement (Transcripts) Transcripts for both master s course and undergraduate course are required. The Information of Grade Point Average (GPA) is required. And if possible, the academic performance standing ( th / students)* may be written. *The rank of your academic record relative to all students in your class or year group must be written. 5 Study plan in detail Write in English on a given form (approximately 1,000 words). 6 Letter of recommendation The letter must be issued by the chairman of the department or the like of the university attended. Applicants working for a company must submit a recommendation letter issued by his/her supervisor. 7 Master s thesis, publications and list of achievements 8 Survey on financial condition The Student must fill out the designated form by themself. 9 Certified copies of certificates or transcripts of English test Please enclose the certificates or transcripts that show applicants English proficiency. TOEIC: 590, TOEFL(iBT): 61, TOEFL(PBT): 500, IELTS: 5.5 or above is preferable. 10 Verification of degree and transcripts *Only for the applicants who have graduated from Chinese universities. Toyohashi University Code: C901401 1) Certificates(3 and 4)issued by Chinese universities must be verified by the China Academic Degree and Graduate Education Development Centre (CDGDC) with CDGDC s official verification (English verification is required). These verifications must be sent to Toyohashi University directly from CDGDC, within the above application deadline. In order to process, the applicant him(her)self must submit certificates to CDGDC, and pay the prescribed fees. 2) In cases where the verification is not issued, or verification is invalid, the admission will be withdrawn. 3) The process must be checked by the web page ( http://www.cdgdc.edu.cn/), without fail. 4) When the procedure is done online, please note the "Application Number" and "Password." These will be needed when you contact CDGDC. 5) It takes about 1 month until the university gets the verification. If the university cannot receive the verification within the deadline, your application might be withdrawn. 6) Applicants must submit the document which shows the date they applied for verification when you submit their application documents for admission. (4) Examination fee: 30,000 yen* An examination fee of 30,000 yen must be paid exactly and in full before or at the same time ad the application is submitted. *For the payment method, please inquire at the International Affairs Division of the university prior to the procedure. <Note> 1) Please do not staple the documents. 2) Application documents should be downloaded from the university s web page and typed on A4 size 4

paper. 3) If any of the certificates are not written in English, an English translation must be attached. 4) Certificates and other official documents must be issued from the university or officials. Photocopies of the documents cannot be accepted unless officially attested. 5) Applications will not be considered if any of the documents are incomplete, incorrect, or lacking supporting evidence, nor will they be considered if they arrive after the deadline. 6) Send all documents by E-mail first (to ryugaku@office.tut.ac.jp) for our confirmation, and send all documents by the registered postal mail later (such as EMS, DHL, and FedEx ). 7) Application materials (including Examination fee) once submitted become the property of the university office and will not be returned. After the submission of documents, no changes will be accepted. If your contact address is amended, please report it immediately. 8) Though supervision and instruction will be exclusively in English, successful applicants are strongly recommended to learn the Japanese language for their daily lives. 5. Method of selection The selection will be carried out based on the documents. 6. Announcement of acceptance The results of the selection will be notified to the applicants by E-mail first by early August 2015, and successful applicants will receive the official result by postal mail later. 7. Admission expenses Admission fee: 282,000 yen Tuition fee: 267,900 yen (for the autumn semester from October to March) 535,800 yen will be necessary as a tuition fee for one academic year. *The admission fee must be paid before the designated date the program begins, and the tuition must be paid within the same calendar month of the start date of the program. *For those applicants enrolled in Toyohashi University International Master s Degree Program and who are graduating in September 2015 and wish to continuously take this Doctoral Program, the admission fee shall be exempted and the above tuition fee must be paid within the same calendar month of the start date of the program. In the case of a revision of the tuition fee, the new tuition fee will be applied from the time the revision has been made. 8. Month of Enrolment October 2015 9.
