About Papunya Papunya was first established as an administrative centre by the government for the Aboriginal people of the region who were displaced from their traditional lands. The Australian government built a water bore and some basic housing at Papunya in the 1950s to provide room for the increasing populations of people in the already-established Aboriginal communities and reserves in the area. Community members predominantly represent the Pintupi and Luritja groups. Population The population of Papunya and its surrounds in 2011 was approximately 416, of which 90% were Indigenous. Power and water Electricity is supplied by a diesel generator. Chlorinated and fluoridated town water is supplied by bore, and waste water is treated in sewerage ponds on the outskirts of town. ICT information Full telephone and internet services. Broadband Satellite Internet Services Telstra 3G Mobile Coverage Television Digital Access Air Papunya can be accessed by air through chartered air services, or seats can be purchased on the mail plane. Road Access to Warumpi is north along the Stuart Highway from Alice Springs, then turn west at the Tanami Road. There is 246km of sealed road and 100km unsealed. All roads within this district are sand (unsealed) and become extremely slippery and boggy after rain. The dry rivers flow very quickly after heavy rains, and will flow for days and up to weeks dependent upon the heaviness of the rainfall. Local government The MacDonnell Regional Council oversees the administration of local governance and delivers community services including corporate and community management, road and building maintenance and waste management. Land tenure Papunya is located within the Haasts Bluff Aboriginal Land Trust and is Aboriginal Land under the NT Land Rights Act (NT) 1976. 2
