NORTH PARK SECONDARY SCHOOL COURSE CALENDAR SUPPLEMENT 2011-2012 THE ARTS Media Arts Media Arts, Grade 12, University/College Preparation ASM4M0 & ASM4MT This course emphasizes the refinement of media arts skills through the creation of a thematic body of work by applying traditional and emerging technologies, tools, and techniques such as multimedia, computer animation, installation art, and performance art. Students will develop works that express their views on contemporary issues and will create portfolios suitable for use in either career or postsecondary education applications. Students will critically analyse the role of media artists in shaping audience perceptions of identity, culture, and community values. Prerequisite: Grade 11 Media Arts or with permission Visual Arts Visual Arts Information/Consumer Design, Grade 11, Open AVI3O0 & AVI3OT This is an introduction to the principles and techniques of graphic design. Typography, magazine design, package design, illustration, and effective media use are studied. Advertising and graphic communication are examined. Students will participate in a fieldtrip to the Ontario College of Art and Design. Studio fee is $20.00. Prerequisite: Visual Arts, Grade 9 or 10 or with permission Visual Arts, Information/Consumer Design, Grade 12, College/University Preparation AWE4M0 This information design course deals specifically with advertising principles and techniques. Package design, display, illustration and effective media use are studied. Advertising past and present is examined. Students will also work towards developing their portfolio for post secondary studies. There is a field trip to the Ontario College of Art and the Toronto Art Studio. Studio fee is $10.00. Prerequisite: AVI 30 or AWE3O or with permission Visual Arts Crafts, Grade 12 AWA4M0 This course focuses on the refinement of the student s skills and knowledge in visual arts. Students will create art works that explore a wide range of subject matter and will evaluate art works using specific criteria. Some of the projects will include glass mosaics, use of plaster, and beadwork focusing on specific art historical examples. Studio fee is $20.00. Prerequisite: Visual Arts, Grade 9 or 10 or with permission Visual Arts Digital Media Yearbook, Grade 11, College/University Preparation AWF3M0 This course focuses on creating a publishable yearbook using digital media. Students will use technical and creative processes in the areas of photography and digital photo editing, digital image creation, theme determination, thematic page planning and creation, print media planning and design, digital illustration and marketing of visual products. Students will use digital photography cameras along with Mac or PC-based hardware and software (e.g. Pixelmator, Photoshop and other digital media products) to produce publishable yearbook pages. Emphasis is placed on technical requirements of paper publication (e.g. image and page resolution, file formats, page layouts), critical analysis of visual products and the use of strong visual images. The majority of photography occurs outside of regular class time. This course is recommended for preparation for the Grade 12 Yearbook Production courses (2 credit package). Visual Art Visual Design Yearbook, Grade 12, College/University Preparation AWD4M0 This course provides an opportunity for students to enhance and apply their skills in the areas of digital photography and graphics, desktop and print publishing, and marketing through production of the school yearbook. Students will use the critical analysis process to deconstruct visual aspects of print publication and explore a range of software and hardware technology that can be applied in their own digital media creation. Students will explore technical and creative processes in the areas of photography and digital photo editing, digital image creation, theme determination, thematic page planning and creation, print media planning and design, digital illustration and marketing of visual products. Prerequisite: none Music, Instrumental, Grade 9, Open AMU1O2 This course is for musicians with at least one year previous experience playing a concert band instrument: woodwind, brass or percussion. Instruments are provided free of charge. Students in this course would benefit in taking the accompanying Repertoire class AMR1O2 as an extra 9 th credit. Music, Piano Keyboard, Grade 9, Open AMK100 This introductory course will help develop the musical skills necessary to play keyboards and synthesizers. Students will learn to both read and perform simple pieces using hands-together technique. The study of the elements of music and listening and creating activities are appropriate to the material performed in class. Music, Repertoire - Large Ensemble: Music Beginner AMR101 Music Experienced AMR102, AMR200, AMR3M0, AMR4M0 Students enrolled in the following regular music courses: AMU 10*, AMU 200, AMU 3M, AMU 4M; would benefit from taking the Large Ensemble course that corresponds to their co-requisite music course. Students may not take a Large Ensemble course without being simultaneously enrolled in a regular music course. The Large Ensemble (full band) course combines ensemble technique, exposure to a broad range of music repertoire, and the development of individual technique within the context of a large-group commitment. These courses are full credit courses and run half a period during one of the lunch periods throughout the entire school year. Music, Piano Keyboard, Grade 10, Open AMK200 This course emphasizes performance of music at an intermediate level that strikes a balance between challenge and skill. Student learning will include participating in creative activities and listening perceptively. Students will also be required to develop a thorough understanding of the language of music, including the elements, terminology and history. This course will help students to develop the skills necessary to play Piano Keyboard. Students will learn to both read and perform pieces using hands-together technique. Music, Introduction to Guitar, Grade 11, Open AMG300 This course develops the student s artistic knowledge and skills through the performance of music and the preparation of music productions. Students will perform appropriate works, particularly works in contemporary popular styles. Independently and in groups, they will also plan, market, and produce music productions, making use of appropriate technology, and will evaluate the results. This introductory Guitar course is open to any senior student interested in learning the basics of playing this instrument. Students who do not own an acoustic guitar will be required to rent one from a music store for the semester. Music, Music and Computers, Grade 11, Open AMM 300 & AMM3OT Students will learn to compose/arrange and record music using popular music software on the computer. Students will gain a working knowledge of music theory; develop song writing skills and techniques; explore melody, harmony and chords; write their own music and create a music CD. Course topics will include learning how to use the music equipment/hardware/software necessary in making music: microphones, mixers, MIDI/audio/digital software/hardware, processing effects, etc. Music industry topics such as making a good music demo; song writing legalities (performing and mechanical rights) and music industry careers will also be covered. AMM3OT was omitted from Chart Your Course but is offered. Music, Vocal/Choral, Grade 10, Open AMV2O0 Vocal music is aimed at singers looking for an all-round and varied course that covers all aspects of singing. This course is open to all genres of music, from pop music to classical. The course will focus on singing technique as well as ensuring the artistic development for each student. The objective is an intense and efficient course that will qualify the participants to apply their newly achieved skills in extra-curricular groups both at North Park and beyond. In the same way, software developers write design documents to build good software. In this course, you will learn how to design and build easy-to-use computer software, including interactive websites. In this course you will learn how to design and write elegant and efficient computer software. You will learn how software is built, from the initial idea through to delivery of the finished product. This course has a special focus on learning how to build effective user interfaces for software. You will apply concepts learned in grade 11 to build more capable software programs. Focus is on successfully implementing a large software development project, in a team environment, from idea conception through to product delivery. HEALTH AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION Health and Physical Education Personal and Fitness Activities, Grade 10, Open PAF20F This course emphasizes regular participation in a variety of enjoyable fitness activities that promote lifelong healthy active living. The focus is on fitness through weight training and aerobic conditioning. Student learning will include the application of movement principles to refine skills; participation in a variety of activities that enhance personal competence, fitness, and health; examination of issues related to healthy sexuality, healthy eating, substance use and abuse; and the use of informed decision-making, conflict resolution, and social skills in making personal choices. There will be a course fee of approximately $40.00 - $50.00 to cover guest speakers/instructors and field trips. Large Group Activities, Grade 10, Open PAL20M This course emphasizes participation in a variety of large group/team activities that promote lifelong healthy active living. Equal portions of this course will focus on the development of skills and strategies for the following sports: basketball, floor hockey, soccer and volleyball. In addition students will participate in weekly athletic development sessions to improve their overall sports performance. Students will also study the various health topics, including: healthy eating as it relates to sport and performance, drug use and performance, conflict resolution and social skills in making personal choices. Students will also study the components of healthy relationships, reproductive health, mental health, and personal safety. SOCIAL SCIENCES AND HUMANITIES Family Studies Parenting, Grade 11, Open HPC3C0 This course focuses on the skills and knowledge needed to promote the positive and healthy nurturing of children, with particular emphasis on the critical importance of the early years to human development. Students will learn how to meet the developmental needs of young children, communicate and discipline effectively, and guide early behaviour. They will have practical experiences with preschoolers, and will learn skills in researching and investigating questions relating to parenting. Students who successfully complete HPC 3O will receive a Certificate indicating hours spent in North Park Playschool. This is useful for entry into post secondary Early Childhood Education courses and is a great addition to the resume package when applying for that a part time job! Managing Personal and Family Resources, Grade 11, College HIR3C0 Interested in learning about adult stuff? This course focuses on the skills and knowledge needed to manage personal resources as you prepare for the transition to adulthood. Topics to be explored include: planning for the future, negotiating a loan, understanding of money management, comparing traditional and alternative forms of work, building healthy relationships, negotiating conflicts and decision-making. Students will experience activities to communicate more effectively for better self-advocacy for supports and services, for personal and family finances, and gain a better understanding of the influences of economic factors and employment trends. This course is a great preparation for activities of adulthood such as making major financial purchases like a car or paying for college, understanding housing options, exploring educational and workforce options. Beliefs, Issues, and Religious Traditions, Grade 11, University/College Preparation HRT3M0 Want to learn more about world religions? This course is about world religions and better understanding the various belief systems that make up our multi-cultural community. Topics covered include studying about the differences and similarities between the central beliefs of various religions; exploring sacred writings, rituals and symbols; analyzing gender stereotypes; reflect on the influences on architecture, art, dress, cuisine; and study the impact of significant religious figures in our society and its past. Students will gain practical knowledge of the influences of a broad range of religions on contemporary society. This course will help you understand the diversity of the people in our own community as well as the world. Issues in Human Growth and Development, Grade 12, University/College Preparation HHG4M0 This course offers a multidisciplinary approach to the study of human development throughout the life cycle, with particular emphasis on enhancing growth and development. Students will examine how early brain and child development are linked to lifelong learning, health, and well-being, and will develop child-care and human-relationship skills through practical experience. Students will have the opportunity to work with children in North Park Playschool. This course also refines students' skills used in researching and investigating issues related to human growth and development.
