MISSION STATEMENT All members of Pathways School recognise the varying needs of all our learners. Learning is the shared responsibility of school, the learner, home and the community and with positive relationships learners can achieve their full potential. We develop lively, enquiring minds, where learners enjoy the widest variety of life-long learning experiences in a safe and supportive environment that promotes self reliance and respect for everyone We challenge our staff to go the extra mile, in order to give our young people the best opportunities possible. We encourage our young people to go the extra mile, with respect to all aspects of their learning. Going the Extra Mile Developing Outstanding Young People; Embedding Outstanding Outcomes At Pathways School we endeavour to provide a safe learning environment where students can make good academic progress, build their own resilience and access support services required for them to develop into well rounded young people with skills and motivation to be successful.

Dear Parents / Carers, Welcome to the Pathways School prospectus. I hope you will find it is an interesting and useful document, and that it gives you all the information you will need while your child is part of our school. Pathways School is a special school for 66 pupils aged between 5 and 16 who are experiencing social, emotional and mental health difficulties. All of our pupils have repeatedly struggled with mainstream education, where their needs have not been adequately met. We believe that an outstanding education means much more than just classroom lessons. We make sure that every child learns to understand and care about other people. They learn self-respect and dignity and the skills they need to live the fullest possible life as an adult. The school is fortunate in having a staff body that are committed to meeting the needs of the children and access to different support services. We look forward to working with you and your child. Further information is available on our website http://www.pathwaysschool.org.uk Yours sincerely Rachel Glover Head Teacher

AIMS OF THE SCHOOL EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES Pathways School fully supports the Local Authority s commitment to Equal Opportunities for all. All of our young people have an entitlement to personal and social development within a safe and caring environment. Pathways School acknowledges that everyone has the right to equal opportunities and we will do all that we can as a school to promote the opportunities to enhance the self-esteem of all our young people, as individuals. Each one of our learners: - Regardless of gender, race, colour, ability or any other cultural diversity is entitled to receive the broad and balanced curriculum offered by Pathways School. - Is individually valued and respected as we endeavour to meet his/her unique needs. - Will be treated fairly and consistently. Staff will support and encourage positive behaviour and discipline. Staff, together with learners and parents, are entitled to be treated with respect.

SCHOOL ETHOS Central to the ethos is the belief in the innate good of everyone. We will give our pupils the time and space to be themselves in a clear, non confrontational, flexible structure. Where there are problems we encourage honesty in addressing them in order to move forward. In situations of conflict, the staff use diffusion and deescalation techniques to calm the situation. After a conflict staff talk through why the conflict developed and put strategies in place to help prevent the situation from recurring. There is a strong expectation of progress. CARING FOR OUR CHILDREN As part of our caring school, every adult takes responsibility for the emotional and behavioural welfare of each child and welcomes parents/carers into school to discuss concerns or problems. EDUCATIONAL HEALTH CARE PLANS (EHCPs) EHCPs are renewed annually. Parents/carers and outside agencies are invited to have an input. Reviews take place with the SENDCO (Special Education Needs & Disability Co-ordinator), or a key adult in school who knows your child well. Interim reviews will be arranged where necessary to assess if the needs of your child are continued to be met. Your child s EHCP will follow them to college and will continue to be monitored after they leave Pathways. THE SCHOOL DAY Staff are on duty from 8.40am and pupils are allowed into school from this time. Please ensure pupils do not arrive before 8.40am, as before this time supervision cannot be provided. Students have a short break and lunchtime break during the day then leave school at 2:10pm (secondary) or 2:15pm (primary). ATTENDANCE Pathways school encourages students to attend regularly, recognising that the commitment to attend indicates a commitment to make the most of learning opportunities. Attendance is a main priority for the school and therefore monitored regularly with strategies in place for encouraging good punctuality and attendance. It is important that students attend regularly. Regular attendance will help students feel part of the school community and make academic progress. If a student gets into a habit of irregular attendance, they will miss vital parts of their learning. Punctuality is important for the same reason. Parents who fail to ensure regular attendance / who do not work with the school to improve their child s attendance may face prosecution.

WHAT A PARENT/CARER SHOULD DO: If a student needs to stay at home due to illness a parent / carer should notify us on the 1st day of absence. If a student needs to leave the school during the day because they have an appointment please let the school know in the form of a note or telephone call giving a reason for the appointment e.g. dentist/ doctor. However, where possible appointments of this nature should be made outside of school hours to ensure that education is not interrupted. We would like parents / carers to contact us should they be having difficulty with attendance as we would like to offer as much support as possible. Parents must provide at least two emergency contact numbers. HEALTHCARE Please inform us if your child has a specific medical problem. Any medication prescribed by a doctor should be administered by parents or carers wherever possible. In other cases medication must be named and given to the school administration staff. You will be required to complete our medication form giving us clear instructions on how and when it should be administered. In the event of an emergency or sudden illness in school, we will try to contact you directly. If this is not possible, and medical attention is considered necessary, your child will be taken to either the Health Centre or Hospital. As teachers are not allowed to authorise certain treatment, it is essential that we have up to date telephone numbers of relatives and friends who can be contacted. In case of an accident First Aid will be administered by a trained member of staff and you will be contacted immediately. Please make sure that we have up to date emergency contact telephone numbers. The school nurse is frequently in school, should you wish to see her please contact school to arrange an appointment.

FIRE DRILL In case of a fire, the bell will ring continuously. 1. Each group will be led out of the nearest fire door and lined up at designated assembly points. 2. Doors and windows should be shut if this is safe, and toilet areas checked by staff. 3. Leave the building by the nearest exit and assemble on the playground. 4. Do not stop to collect personal belongings. 5. Assemble in class groups. Registers will be taken to each assembly point. 6. No one should re-enter the building until it is declared safe to do so. Arrangements for leaving the building in an emergency are clearly displayed around the building. CONSULTATION WITH PARENTS / CARERS We value home to school relationships and like to work closely with parents and carers to make sure that the young people we have in our care get the very best opportunities throughout their school career. If you have any contributions or suggestions about the prospectus, or any other aspect of school life, please let us know. Staff are always available to discuss children s progress. LUNCHTIME ARRANGEMENTS School dinners are prepared and supplied by Mellors Catering staff at Normanby Primary School. Orders are taken as part of the morning registration routine. However if you arrive late then you will need to make sure your order is placed at reception BEFORE 9:30am. At Pathways we encourage healthy eating and school meals are prepared to set regulations. A packed lunch can be brought into school to be eaten at lunch time. However, the school cannot provide refrigeration for packed lunches. For Health and Safety reasons we would advise parents/carers that all packed lunches should therefore contain a cool pack. Application forms are at the back of this prospectus / available from the school office if you think your child may be entitled to a free school meal. Even if your child currently does not take a lunch, schools are entitled to extra funding based on this information and any extra funding could be used to further support your child. We therefore ask that even if you think you are not eligible, please complete the attached

application form. The cost of a school meal is 2.20 (secondary meal) and 2.05 (primary meal). SECURITY Whilst we make every effort to ensure that our school provides a welcome to parents/carers, friends and members of the community, we are very much aware of our responsibilities for the safety of the children in our care. In order to protect our children we have made every effort to secure the premises from unwanted intruders. Please be patient if these measures, on occasion, cause you inconvenience. Visitors to the school are required to sign in using the electronic system in reception. Members of staff are expected to challenge visitors not wearing identification or that that they don t recognise. BEHAVIOUR POLICY We expect all students to behave safely, allowing themselves and their peers to learn and make progress. If a student misbehaves they will be expected to face the consequences. See Behaviour / Rewards Policy for more information. TRANSPORT For eligible students transport is provided by Redcar & Cleveland Borough Council. Please visit www.redcar-cleveland.gov.uk for more information and to see a copy of the policy. COMPLAINTS PROCEDURE The school has a Complaints Procedure which is available on the school website. CAR PARKING IN SCHOOL There is very little space in and around school to park. We ask for your help in this matter by ensuring that where you park is both safe and legal. PASTORAL CARE Pastoral care of our children is both the individual and collective responsibility of the staff of the school. However, the staff are responsible for the immediate care and guidance of the children in their own class. We also have a behaviour and wellbeing team who support when needed.

Although it may be difficult for you, it is important that we are informed of any occurrence at home which may upset your child. Any information shared in confidence will be respected. You are welcome to come into school at any time to discuss the welfare of your child. It is only by working together that we can best meet the needs of individual children. CHILD PROTECTION Parents and carers should be aware that the school has a duty to take reasonable action to ensure the welfare and safety of its pupils. In cases where school staff are concerned that a pupil may be subject to ill treatment, neglect or other forms of abuse, staff will follow Redcar & Cleveland s Child Protection Procedures and inform Social Care of their concerns. This may then involve a visit to the home by a Social Worker. The school s Child Protection Policy is updated on a regular basis and is available on our website. Leaflets are available from reception, including details of schools safeguarding team. All staff employed by the school are subject to rigorous safer recruitment checks. SCHOOL COUNCIL We are keen to involve pupils in decision-making processes wherever possible and to give them the opportunity to air their views on school matters. We have a School Council, made up of pupil representatives from each class, teaching assistants and teaching staff. The Council s members meet regularly to discuss various topics. GROUP SIZES AND STAFFING Due to the nature of the school our group sizes reflect the need of the pupils. We normally have capacity for 6-8 pupils per group with 2 members of staff. CURRICULUM The curriculum although based on the National Curriculum reflects the school ethos and caters for the individual learning differences of our pupils. Through both the formal and hidden curriculum, pupils are given a wide range of educational experiences. As a result we have high expectations of our pupil s academic potential. Through various routes we expect all our pupils to meet or exceed their own potential at the end of year 11. All students will study a core curriculum of English, Maths, Science, PE and PSHE. Additional subjects including vocational courses, will be offered depending on the interests of individuals.

The school commissions various specialist staff including: Occupational Therapist, Counsellors, Educational Psychologist to assess students and advise staff on developing a bespoke curriculum.
