C R E A T E D 8 / 2 1 / 2 0 1 3 Recommended Settings for AVImark

Introduction The following pages contain instructions for setting up AVImark. If you need assistance, please call our friendly technical support staff at 877-838-9273 (877-VET-WARE). You may also visit our web site http://www.avimark.net/support for information concerning our software and our latest hardware recommendations. Supported Operating Systems For one through 10 workstations, you may use Windows Server (2003 2008 and 2012), Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8 business editions. We recommend the same operating system for all workstations to avoid any possible compatibility issues. If you are using different operating systems in a peer-to-peer network, use the most recent operating system as the AVImark server. Workstation Operating Systems: Windows 8 Professional (32/64-bit) Windows 7 Ultimate (32/64-bit) Windows 7 Professional (32/64-bit) Windows Vista Ultimate (32/64-bit) Windows Vista Business (32/64-bit) Windows XP Professional (32-bit Only) Windows XP Tablet Edition (32-bit Only) Important: Windows XP will no longer be supported after April 8, 2014. This is when XP will reach its end of life. For more information http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/products/lifecycle Do not use Home Editions One of the many reasons we do not recommend Windows Home editions is because this operating system will only allow a maximum of five connected workstations. Additionally, Windows Home editions lacks many security features required for the business-computing environment For 11 or more workstations, AVImark requires a server computer installed with Windows Server (2003, 2008, and 2012) operating system dedicated to serving AVImark to your workstations. The term Dedicated means the server computer will not run AVImark, on a daily basis except on the rare occasion that AVImark may require maintenance. You should update the server and workstations with the latest service pack available from Microsoft. Your workstation computers should have installed any of our recommended Windows workstation operating systems. 1

Server Operating Systems: Windows 2013 (Standard, Enterprise, Data Center) Edition (32/64-bit) Windows 2012 (Standard, Enterprise, Data Center) Edition (32/64-bit) Windows 2008 (Standard, Enterprise, Data Center) Edition (32/64-bit) Windows 2003 (Standard, Enterprise, Data Center) Edition (32/64-bit) Important: When setting up a Windows Server, it is VERY important to contact a reputable technician who is willing to follow our specifications and recommendations discussed later in this guide. Recommended Word Processors Please review the following key points before purchasing or installing a word processor application for use with AVImark. We recommend using Microsoft Word Versions 2003, 2007 2010 or 2013. If you require other Microsoft Office applications, such as Excel, Outlook, etc, you may install them, too. We only support office suites that are licensed for commercial use. Prior to purchasing or using any office suite or word processing application, please review its End User License Agreement (EULA). Microsoft provides a web page where you can search for your product and review its EULA. http://www.microsoft.com/about/legal/en/us/intellectualproperty/useterms/default.aspx We highly recommend using the same word processor version on all workstations to avoid document compatibility issues. When installing a word processor application on your computers, we recommend that you choose the complete installation package including any optional components and let the installer select the appropriate installation directory. We recommend installing Microsoft Word or Office on at least one computer on your network for printing documents. If the server computer is dedicated to AVImark, you need not install a word processing program unless you plan to edit documents on the server. Libri office is not capable of printing reminders from AVImark. Additionally, AVImark will not work with spreadsheets designed using Libri office. Lastly, frames and forms in documents designed in Libri office will not work correctly in AVImark. Important: The version of Microsoft Word included in the Microsoft Works Suite packages or office starter does have known issues with AVImark. If possible, avoid using this software package. A Word about Documents You must store all AVImark documents on the server computer in the My Documents directory. You may organize your documents by placing them in separate subdirectories under the My Documents directory. AVImark will automatically install several hundred related documents in several subdirectories under the My Documents directory. You can link additional documents to your many diagnoses, treatments, inventory as take-home client education documents. You will need to store other related documents in the directory locations specified in AVImark in the Work With Hospital Setup System tab. 2

Printers We recommend using printers listed on our hardware recommendations sheet located at http://www.avimark.net/gtka/hardware-requirements. We do not recommend using multifunction printers (i.e. all-in-one copier/fax/printers) with AVImark because multifunction printers are typically slow and may not work properly. If you require the use of a multifunction printer, please avoid using it in a high volume-printing environment. Install a local printer You can insert the disk that came with the printer or go to the manufactures web site and download the lasts driver and software. Run the setup for the printer and follow the onscreen instructions make sure you do not hook up the printer until the install wizard tells you to. 1. Install a shared printer 2. When installing the printer on the work stations, 3. On the local install of the printer right click and go to the printer properties. 4. Click on the sharing tab 5. Check share this printer 6. From the workstation you re going to install the printer on press the windows key and the letter R this should bring up The run box 7. Type in \\computer name (example is \\resource1) 8. A screen should appear displaying a printer icon. 9. Place cursor over required printer. 10. Right click and select connect. You may receive a prompt asking for permission to install a printer driver. Left-click on the button labeled yes. Windows will install the printer on the local machine. 11. If necessary, you may need to open Windows Printers and Faxes and set the printer as default. 12. Open AVImark. Left-click on the utilities menu and then printer setup. In printer setup, ensure the correct printer is selected for each item. Next, left-click on the form assignment tab (top left) and set the correct form assignment for the printer. IMPORTANT: You should choose the correct Form for each printer else AVImark may not print correctly (i.e. HP Laser Jet 1200 requires Letter or Picture; a Dymo label printer may use 30258 Diskette). On printers that have a power management function, you must disable Sleep Mode If Sleep Mode is not disabled, you may experience various issues when printing from AVImark. Some printers have extra software used for monitoring the status of the printer. If you experience problems, please remove the printer software and try re-installing only the driver for the printer. DO NOT capture printer ports. IMPORTANT: AVImark does not work properly with Auto printers or redirected printers. 3

Required Operating System Settings AVImark requires that you make certain settings in Windows for our application to function properly. We provide instructions for only our recommended operating systems Suggested settings: Keep your drivers up to date for printers and any other devices Stay up to date with all windows updates: Keep your router and peripherals firmware up to date. Make sure computers are connected at the same speed and duplex. (exp 100mbs or 1gbs) Vista and above when you connect to your network it will prompt for the type of network select work Network for best results. Networks that are not up-to-date may experience some of the following issues after updating AVImark to a higher version: Write Caching Printer drivers may need to be updated, printer settings changed, etc. Word processing software may need to be reinstalled and/or updated, etc Operating system settings may need to be adjusted. Sharing issues may need to be addressed. While AVImark will do what it can to assist you in making the changes needed, it may become necessary for you to retain the services of a Network or Computer consultant to make some of these changes. If you have any questions please contact Technical Support at 1-877-838-9273. Right click Properties on My Computer. Select the Hardware tab. Select Device Manager. Left click on the + in front of Disk drives. Right click Properties on the Hard Disk Drive where you installed AVImark. Left click click on the Policy s tab. Uncheck box labeled Enable Write Caching on the Disk. 4

Display Settings AVImark requires you set the resolution of your display to either 800x600, 1024x768 or higher resolution with a color quality of 32-bit. You should set the DPI setting to Normal size (96 DPI). AVImark recommends 18 or larger monitors. Open the Control Panel. When the Control Panel appears, double left click on the Display icon. On the Display Properties window, left click on the Settings tab. You will notice a Screen Resolution and Color Quality setting. If AVImark does not display correctly on your monitor, you should choose a different resolution or color quality. The DPI setting is located by clicking on the advanced button and should be set to normal or smaller. After you have made the appropriate display settings, click OK at the bottom of the window to save the new settings. Windows may prompt you to restart your computer. Important: You may expand any screen in AVImark using the mouse to drag outward and downward. This feature is only available in 1024x768-screen resolution. Power Options Open Control Panel Click Power Options Select High Performance Click Change power-saving settings Click Change plan settings Set the computer to sleep set to never Click Change advanced power settings Select 0 Minutes for turn off hard disk after Select Never Minutes for sleep after Select 0 Minutes for hibernate after Click ok Hiding the Task Bar If you are using the 800x600-screen resolution, you may need to hide the Windows task bar to see the bottom of AVImark Client Information Display: At the bottom of your desktop, you should see the Windows Task Bar. Put the mouse pointer on the task bar where there are no icons and click the Right mouse button. Left click on the Properties option to open the Task bar properties window. Check the Auto-hide box and then click OK to hide the task bar. 5

The task bar will reappear when you move the mouse pointer to the bottom edge of the screen. Windows Firewall The following information concerning the Windows Firewall applies only to your server computer. Open the Windows Firewall Click on the Add Program or the Allow another program button and browse to the AVImark folder. Add the following programs to the exclusions. AVImark.exe AVImarkServer.exe Update.exe Upgrade.exe MPS.exe By adding the AVImark.exe and Update.exe, you have allowed AVImark to connect to the update server, send e- mails, use the data safe, and download utility programs. Also make sure that File and Printer Sharing check box is checked. If you cannot open the Windows Firewall, make sure these services are running. Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Event Log Important: If you are not familiar with starting and stopping services, you should contact your local technician. AVImark Technical Support cannot assist with starting and stopping Windows Services. Power Management on your network card: To check network card Power Management in Windows Server 2008 do the following steps: Right click My Computer Click Manage Click Device Manger Click the Plus sign next to the network adapters Double-Click your Network Adapter Click Power Management tab Un-Check Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power 6

Adding your server name to the Internet Explorer trusted intranet sites: Open internet explorer Click tools Click internet options Click the security tab Click local intranet Click sites Click advanced (Under add this web site to zone type in the server name in this format \\server) Click add Click close Suggested Settings for Windows XP Go to My Computer Tools.Folder Options.View uncheck the option "Automatically search for network folders and Printers". You must then uninstall and reinstall all printers. This feature will cause problems with printing from AVImark. Go to My Computer Tools Folder Options uncheck "Use Simple File Sharing". Simple file sharing does not provide adequate control over Windows sharing and security permissions. Suggested Settings for Windows Vista, Windows 7 or Windows 8 Double Click on My Computer Click Organize Click Folder and Search Options Click View Un-Check use Sharing Wizard Click ok (Make sure that you set your permissions correctly to allow AVImark to function properly.) Sharing Wizard does not provide adequate control over Windows sharing and security permissions. IMPORTANT: If you specify individual User accounts, they MUST have Full Control sharing and security permissions over the AVImark Directory. Windows User Account Requirements IMPORTANT: AVImark will not function properly unless the user account logged into Windows is a member of the local Administrators group or the Power Users group. For networks running a domain controller, the same rule applies to domain user accounts. Lastly, a Windows Guest or Limited User account will not work with AVImark. 7

Recommended Anti-Virus Software Settings We do NOT recommend any type of security suite or security package containing more than just anti-virus. We do not recommend ANY SPECIFIC anti-virus program. As long as the anti-virus you choose has the ability to add exceptions And does not contain a software firewall. Settings you will want to set for your anti-virus. 1. Disable the Smart Scan feature (if applicable) 2. Disable the Office/Word plug in (if applicable) 3. Exclude all AVImark folders or the following extensions from the real time scanning (*.da$, *.di$, *.ix$, *.or$, *.vm$, *.o2$, and *.v2$.) 4. Exclude the AVImark.exe, AVImarkServer.exe, update.exe and upgrade.exe from any real-time scanning. We would recommend that you visit your anti-virus web site for information on how to add the AVImark files to the exclusion list. You may also take a look at the following Microsoft Knowledge Base Article that discusses slowness issues with antivirus due to scanning windows files and what files you may exclude for windows to get better performance this is a suggestion not something that AVImark requires. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822158 Sharing AVImark Before trying to share the AVImark folder, you should disable the Sharing wizard or simple file sharing. With the Sharing wizard or simple file sharing disabled, when you select a AVImark folder, right click the folder, and left click Share, rather than the wizard appearing, Windows opens the folder s properties dialog box and displays Windows opens the folder s properties dialog box and displays the Sharing tab. To create or modify a network share using advanced settings, follow these steps: On the Sharing tab, click Advanced Sharing to display the Advanced Sharing dialog box. Select Share This Folder. The share name should default to AVImark. If the share name is different, please type AVImark in the share name. Next, click on the permissions button, make sure the Groups and User names window contains Everyone. Select Everyone, check the box that reads Full Control under allow, and click the Ok button. Click the security tab, select Everyone if you do not see everyone click edit then add type the name everyone click check names this should underline it and click ok, and check the Full Control box. Lastly, click the Ok button. You have now shared AVImark on your network. IMPORTANT: Although not recommended, if you specify individual User accounts, they MUST have Full Control sharing and security permissions over the AVImark directory and files. 8

Disable IPV6 Network Protocol 1. Open Network and Sharing Center. 2. On the left, select Change adapter settings (Windows 7) or Manage network connections (Vista). 3. Right-click the connection for which you want to disable IPv6, and select Properties. 4. Uncheck Internet Protocol Version 6 (TCP/IPv6) and click OK. Creating Shortcuts to AVImark When creating the AVImark icon on your stations, AVImark requires a simple shortcut with a UNC path (i.e. \\your server\your share\avimark.exe) To create a shortcut icon on each workstation, go to the Windows Desktop, then: Double click on the Network Places icon to open the Network window If your network is the type Workgroup, locate and double left click on the option View Workgroup Computers. If your network is the type Domain, double left click on Entire Network Microsoft Windows Network (your domain s name) Locate the icon that represents the server computer and double left click to open the server computer s window. Locate the folder that represents the drive or share in which AVImark has been installed and double left click to open the drive or share. Once in the share location, find the AVImark folder and double left click on it. This will show all of the contents of the AVImark folder. In the AVImark folder at the top of your window, you should see a menu. Click on the tab labeled View then click on Details. This will list the contents in an easier way to view. Look for the icon labeled AVImark or AVImark.exe. The Type column should indicate Application. With the mouse pointer on the icon, right click point to Send To left click on Desktop (create shortcut). This will create an AVImark icon on your Windows desktop on that workstation Networking If you are using AVImark for Windows on more than one computer, please have a reputable network technician review these requirements with you. It is imperative that the chosen network technician follow the specifications required by AVImark. If you do not correctly follow these specifications, you may experience slowness, errors, or even computer lockups. 9

Wired Networking As a minimum: Use Category 5e or Category 6 network cable and 100/1000 Mbps Ethernet Network Adapters and Switches. We have seen excellent results using both the 3-Com and Intel brand of network interface cards. IPV4 is our only recommended networking protocol for use with AVImark. You must not install the IPX/SPX networking protocol. VERY IMPORTANT: Please do not use a network hub; they are inefficient and can degrade the performance of our product. DO NOT MAP DRIVES; AVImark has known issues running through mapped drives. DO NOT attempt to use AVImark on Novell or Lantastic networks. DO NOT install AVImark on the workstation computers; ONLY on the server. Wireless Networking AVImark will perform marginally, at best, over a wireless network. This technology does not provide a very reliable network connection. If you desire to network wirelessly, we highly recommend the 802.11n or a faster wireless networking standard. We see the best results with clinics using business class wireless routers and wireless network cards that support the 802.11n standard. 10
