1. GENERAL INFORMATION 1.1. SOME FACTS ABOUT LITHUANIA 5 The Republic of Lithuania is one of the three Baltic States (Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia) along the Baltic Sea, which regained its independence in 1991 after 40 years of Soviet occupation. In 2004 Lithuania became a member of European Union and NATO. Lithuania was first mentioned in the written sources in 1009, so 2009 was celebrated as the Millennium of Lithuania. System of Government The Republic of Lithuania is a parliamentary republic. Lithuanian parliament, called Seimas, is elected for a four year term. The head of the state is the President elected directly for a five year term. The President on the approval of the parliament appoints the Prime Minister and on the latter s nomination the rest of the cabinet. Capital The Capital of Lithuania is Vilnius, the largest city of republic. The Old Town, historical centre of Vilnius, is one of the largest in Eastern Europe: it covers 254 hectares. Because of its uniqueness, the Old Town of Vilnius has been included into the UNESCO World Heritage Register. Geography Covering 65 303 km 2 Lithuania is the largest of three Baltic countries. North to south, the greatest distance is 276 km, east to west 373 km. From the cartographical point

6 of view, Lithuania is a Central European rather than an Eastern European country, as it is sometimes groundlessly claimed. Located in the centre of Europe, Lithuania is situated at one of the largest crossroads of the continent. It is divided by a straight line connecting Paris and Berlin with Moscow via Vilnius, whereas another straight line, connecting Helsinki with Athens, also crosses the centre of Lithuania. Lithuania is bordered to the North Latvia, to the East and South by Belarus and Poland, and to the Southwest by the Kaliningrad (Karaliaucius) Region of the Russian Federation. Mostly there are plains in Lithuania. The highest point is Juozapine Hill, 293 meters upon sea level. The largest river Nemunas (937 km, 475 km on the territory of Lithuania), gathers and carries the waters of many tributaries to the Baltic Sea, wherein lies Lithuania s famous amber coast. There are a lot of lakes (the largest one Druksiai covers 42 km 2 ) and swamps and a mixed forest zone covers 30 % of the country. Climate Lithuania s climate is maritime continental. It rains quite often in Lithuania. The average annual temperature is +6,1 0 C, the average temperature in January being 4,9 0 C and in July +17 0 C. the Average annual precipitation is 661 mm. Population There are ~3,4 million resident population of which ~2,26 are urban citizens and ~1,13 rural citizens. Females make up 52,7 % and males 47,3 % of the country population. The major cities are: Vilnius (pop. ~547 thous.); Kaunas (pop. ~357 thous.); Klaipeda (pop. ~183 thous.); Siauliai (pop. ~126 thous.); Panevezys (pop. ~115 thous.); Alytus (pop. ~69 thous.);

Currency Lithuania s national currency is Litas (Lt). Paper notes are circulated in 10, 20, 100, and 500 Lt bills and 1, 2, 5, 10 and 50 ct coins. 7 1 Euro = 3,45 Lt Cost of living In comparison with Western European countries, Lithuania is not an expensive country to live in. 1500 Lt a month is enough for a single student. This should be enough to cover food, accommodation, local transport, books, health care, entertainment and miscellaneous expenses. 1.2. KLAIPEDA TOWN Klaipeda was found on the western coast of the Baltic Sea in 1252. At the beginning Klaipeda was called under the German name Memel. The Lithuanian name Klaipeda was first mentioned in 1420. During different historical periods Klaipeda had been a part of Russia, Prussia, France, Sweden, Poland and Lithuania. In 1923 Klaipeda became a part of Lithuania. Nowadays Klaipeda is the third largest town of Lithuania. It is the northern most ice-free port in the Baltics and the only one in Lithuania. Klaipeda State seaport is the most important and the biggest Lithuanian transport hub connecting sea, land and railway routes from East to West. Klaipeda cherishes nice marine traditions it hosts the Sea Festival on the last weekend of July every year since 1934. Sea Festival is the greatest, most favorite and most

8 colorful summer holiday in Lithuania, which attracts lots of people from all over the world. Klaipeda enjoys intensive musical life several festivals of serious and light music and concerts are held here. The International Pilies Jazz Festival held in late June is a real fiesta for music lovers, every year it receives new and new world class stars. 14 3. ACCOMMODATION There are several different alternatives for arranging your accommodation in Klaipeda. Klaipeda University offers a dormitory for international students. Accommodation matters must be considered in advance together with the application form for studies at Klaipeda University. The dormitory is located in Statybininku str. 43. It is in the southern part of the town. It takes about 25 minutes to go by bus to the main University campus, but is very close to the faculty of Social Sciences. All the rooms are furnitured with desks, single beds, wardrobes and wash-hand-basins. There are two bathrooms in a corridor and two kitchens on each floor. There is a self-service laundry in the dormitory. Unfortunately, there is no canteen. But about 10 minutes by foot from the dormitory in Taikos str. there is a supermarket IKI, with several shops, cafés and restaurants. The price for the dormitory is about 300-400 Litas (86 118 Euros) per month, depending on a room. Another solution for accommodation is renting a flat in a town. It is more expensive than living in a dormitory of course. The prices may vary from 500 to 1000 Litas (145 290 Euros) per month, plus nominal fee for utilities. You can look for the flat on your own but do not hesitate to ask your tutor or International Office staff for help. 4. There is no charge for those eligible under EU regulations. For scheduled hospital treatment, you will need to be referred by a general practitioner or a specialist. Information for the persons who are not coming from the EU or other countries where EHIC is issued. Please insure your health privately before coming to Lithuania. The tradition of eating well is inherited from the ancestors who would say he who eats well, works well One of the oldest and most fundamental staple food was and still is rye bread. It is eaten every day for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Potatoes have become Lithuania s second bread, an essential starch staple and are eaten throughout the year. Many delicious, tasty dishes are made with potatoes. They are eaten alone or as an accompaniment to a main course, soup, meat, fish, mushrooms, eggs and dairy products. The most popular potato dishes are Zeppelins (cepelinai), potato sausages, potato casserole and pancakes. Cepelinai is the most famous national food.
