Artist Request for Proposal Pop-Up Art Spaces transform vacant storefronts into public art galleries & exhibits by facilitating partnerships between local artists, gallerists & property owners. The program brings color, attention, life & energy to otherwise unused spaces. The intention is that the selected business districts benefit from the attention & aesthetic improvements that art installations spawn. The Village of Homewood s Council for the Arts is offering you the opportunity to create your own gallery for your art by space donated by property owners of unused or vacant storefronts. The Council is currently seeking proposals from artists & curators for its 2011 Pop-Up Art Space gallery locations. How it Works Homewood s Council for the Arts does not own or rent gallery space. Instead, it identifies & solicits temporary exhibition sites inside vacant storefronts & public spaces. The locations range from windows that may be viewed 24/7 to storefront & interior spaces. The program began in 2010. The plan is to regularly add new exhibition sites throughout Homewood s central business district throughout 2011. There is no entry fee or rental fee to the artist. Each space is donated by Homewood s commercial property owners. The Homewood Council for the Arts is looking for artwork in a variety of media from individuals & groups: 2D visual art, sculpture, live art, & video or new media. Each exhibit & site will have its own unique set of guidelines in terms of size, visibility, & other physical requirements. An artist will supply all the materials as well as hardware for mounting their exhibit.
Artists are asked to be prepared to remove work within 10 days should the space be rented or the space changed over. Artists must agree to leave each location in the same or better condition than initially presented. This means that the Village of Homewood or the property owner will not sustain costs to restore the location to an acceptable condition as a result of the installation/use of the exhibit space. Every exhibit is a one-of-a-kind experience that requires all parties to communicate about appropriate & inappropriate content for a specific exhibit space. The Homewood Council for the Arts reserves the right to refuse submissions based upon appropriateness for a family-friendly community, & is sensitive to the needs & limitations of the property owners & particular locations. The property owner/landlord has authority to dismiss artists if they do not approve of how the space is being utilized. Art that will be visible from the sidewalk should abide by the content restrictions that apply to public art. To facilitate an amenable understanding between property owner/landlord & artist, the Homewood Council for the Arts has a draft agreement to help outline expectations for all parties involved. The Village of Homewood & Homewood Council for the Arts are only facilitators of the agreement & not to be named as a parties in the executed agreement. Selection Process All interested artists must first submit a complete application (homewoodpopupartspace.com). These proposals are then reviewed by the Homewood Council for the Arts made up of local art professionals & leaders in the community. The criteria for judging will be the quality, engagement, interaction, & accessibility of the work. If selected, artists are then matched with a space that meets their needs/requirements as it becomes available. Artists' Responsibilities Review draft agreement with property owner.
