THE US COLLEGE PATHWAY The US college system provides a student athlete the ability to continue their development in a world class training environment, while obtaining their university degree. The US college system provides 4 levels of performance based on size of school and athletic budget: NCAA D1: Larger schools, larger budget based on student population. Although the top 20-30 D1 programs are among the best in the country, many of the other teams that comprise D1 have quality programs that compete with other divisions. NCAA D2: Smaller schools, less money that is budgeted for the athletic program. Quality of the athletic program is high, and many D2 programs can compete with D1. NCAA D3: Smaller liberal arts schools, though are ranked among the top institutions academically. The focus of D3 schools are academics, though many top D3schools can compete convincingly against the top D1 and D2 schools. NAIA: Different governing body, smaller # of schools that do not have the athletic budget to compete against the NCAA schools. More international students, and many of the top NAIA schools can compete against the top NCAA schools.
