ACLS Provider Tuition: $250 (Free to Mercy Employees) Coordinator: Cheryl Palmer The Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) is a 2-day course designed for healthcare providers who either direct or participate in the resuscitation of a patient. The goal of the ACLS course is to improve the quality of care provided to the adult victim of a cardiac arrest or other cardiovascular emergency. This course is designed to enhance the participant s skills in the treatment of arrest and peri-arrest patients through active participation in a series of simulated cardiac and respiratory cases. These simulations are designed to reinforce the important concepts including: BLS primary survey, ACLS secondary survey, ACLS algorithms, and effective team dynamics. Basic Cardiac Arrhythmias Tuition: $120 (Free to Mercy Employees) Coordinator: Richard Schneider The purpose of this course is to give the healthcare professional the tools and skills to perform basic electrocardiogram (ECG) interpretation. This course covers the principles of ECG interpretation, sinus, atrial, junctional, ventricular, heart blocks, and paced rhythms. This course combines interactive discussions with lots of hands-on practice using cardiac rhythm strips. A basic knowledge of cardiac arrhythmias is a prerequisite for ACLS and PALS. 11/28 11/29/07 8:00A 4:30P ECR Basic Life Support (CPR) for the Healthcare Provider Tuition: $35 (Free to Mercy Employees) Coordinator: Rhonda Janky The American Heart Association designed the BLS for Healthcare Providers Course to prepare a wide variety of healthcare professionals to recognize several life-threatening emergencies and to provide CPR, use an AED, and relieve choking in a safe, timely, and effective manner. IV Training Tuition: $25 (Free to Mercy Employees) Coordinator: Richard Schneider This course is designed for healthcare providers interested in learning the basic technique of IV insertion. Students are assigned the Healthstream module Essentials of IV Therapy, Module 1 and then arrange time with a Nurse Educator to practice the technique of IV insertion on a manikin. To arrange this training, contact any of the Mercy Staff Development Nurse Educators. Nonviolent Crisis Intervention Note: This class is only for Mercy Employees. Coordinator: Linda Behrens This interactive course provides training in how to prevent or deescalate disruptive behavior with practical nonverbal/verbal interventions along with personal safety techniques to avoid injury. Nursing Orientation Coordinator: Richard Schneider Nursing Orientation is designed to assist new nursing staff with their transition into the clinical area. This program is offered every month and covers topics such as Glucose Monitors, Role of the Chaplain, Wound Care, Restraints, Body Mechanics, Code 4 Procedures, Meditech, IV and PCA pumps, and Medication Safety. PBDS Assessment Coordinator: Richard Schneider PBDS (Performance Based Development System) is an assessment tool used to evaluate an individual s ability to perform their job safely and effectively. This system assesses the interpersonal and critical thinking skills of nurses and other direct caregivers and makes individualized recommendations for their orientation, training, and professional development. New hires should complete the PBDS assessment as part of their orientation. Pain Management for Nurses CE: 6.8 hours Tuition: $75 (Free to Mercy Employees) Coordinator: Richard Schneider Pain Management for Nurses is a class designed to meet 6 of the 7 hours of pain management education as required by the Oregon State Board of Nursing. Topics that will be covered include general pain management, barriers to managing pain, pain assessment, pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment of pain, and the treatment of pain in terminally ill and dying patients. Upon completion, participants will be granted 6.8 CE approved through the Arizona Nurses Association. PALS Provider Tuition: $250 (Free to Mercy Employees) Coordinator: Richard Schneider The Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Provider Course is designed for healthcare providers who initiate and direct advanced life support beyond basic life support through the stabilization or transport phases of a pediatric emergency, either in or out of the hospital. In this course, you will enhance your skills in the evaluation and management of an infant or child with respiratory compromise, circulatory compromise, or cardiac arrest. Skills stations are used to practice effective pediatric assessment and resuscitation. TEAM Course Tuition: $250 (Free to Mercy Employees with manager s approval) Coordinator: Cheryl Palmer The Oregon Trauma Emergency Assessment and Management (T.E.A.M.) is a two day course designed to provide a foundation for nurses who participate in the care of trauma patients. This course includes lectures on the initial management of the traumatized patient and hands on application of those learned skills. The T.E.A.M. course meets criteria for the Oregon Trauma system hospital requirement for a Health Division approved trauma life support course for nurses. Any registered nurse may attend. (Free to Mercy Employees with manager s approval) Coordinator: Cheryl Palmer Trauma Nurse Core Curriculum is a 2-day course designed to provide E.R. Nurses, ICU nurses, and EMT s with core knowledge and skills to care for a trauma patient. It includes initial assessment, airway management, immobilization devices, and multiple trauma interventions. The course includes lectures and hands on participation in simulated cases utilizing these skills. Skills will be assessed in testing stations. Registration Information Mercy Employees: to sign up for any class in this catalog, follow these steps: 1. Complete a Vacation Request form for the date(s) of the class you want to take so that you will not be scheduled to work during class time. 2. Obtain your manager s signature on this form. 3. Call Rhonda Janky at 677-4321 to register for the class. 4. Obtain any required textbooks. Texts for BLS, ACLS, and PALS can be borrowed from the Staff Development office (located in the back of the Human Resources building) for a deposit (BLS $10, ACLS $30, PALS $35). When you return the book in satisfactory condition, you get your deposit back. 5. Call Rhonda a week before the class to verify the class time and location. 6. If you cannot attend a class you are registered for, please call Rhonda as soon as possible to cancel or reschedule.
