Undergraduate courses BA in Theology The theology programme can be taken as a one-year certificate, a two-year diploma or a three-year honours degree. It is normally taken full-time, although it is possible to study part-time within a commutable distance. It is a general theology degree with a particular focus on mission. The teaching is offered through a mixture of lectures, seminars, workshops, group tutorials and individual learning. Students on the course have found it affirming to their faith and helpful in giving them direction and focus as to how they might serve God in the future. In year one there are a number of units on introductory subjects such as Old and New Testaments, theology, Christian history, worship, evangelism, study skills, discipleship and spiritual formation. These provide a strong basis for further study, although they also provide a solid stand alone year. An important feature of each year of the Theology programme is a mission placement stream where teams of students work with local congregations in England and Ireland, engage in schools ministry and the college Festival. If desired, by taking certain options in their first year, students can complete the academic studies required to qualify as a Methodist Local Preacher. In year two there are further units looking at theology, mission, Old and New Testament exegesis and world religions, biblical language (Hebrew), some focused options in youth, children s or third age ministry, and evangelism in urban or interfaith settings. One unit offered examines the Gospel of Luke and takes place in Jerusalem, Israel. There is also a placement opportunity similar to that offered in the first year. In year three, Biblical and theological subjects are continued alongside the placement stream and a dissertation. There are a number of options that include Celtic mission, youth mission, leading and pioneering fresh expressions of church, public theology, religious pluralism and leadership. Cliff College reserves the right to offer alternative units for each level according to availability.
