Prerequisite : Medical Terminology Grade Level 10 1. Description DENTAL ASSSTNG Dental Assisting is a full year course offered to sophomores, beginning with the history of dentistry up to today s modern concept of the dental health team, while focusing on the role of each in the delivery of dental services. Professionalism in grooming, human relations, speech, and ethics are explored in relationship to the dental team, and the patients. The course encompasses basic dental anatomy, including head and neck anatomy, which ties facts and principles to practical dental situations. This course prepares the student to function on theory as well as practical applications in the development of manipulative skills. Students gain proficiency in clinical skills such as, automatic film processing, mounting dental radiographs, radiation safety, instrument identification, oral hygiene, laboratory procedures, and sterilization including OSHA guidelines. n addition, basic duties of operatory management, support, patient preparation and basic specialty procedures are covered. The prospective dental assistant student also acquires knowledge in psychology as applied to understanding the dental patient s behavior. Concentration is focused on exploring methods to aid patients in overcoming fears and anxieties about dentistry, and situations facing the dental health team in their relationship with each other. Job Outlook for Dental Assistants: The job outlook for dental assistants is excellent employment in this field is expected to grow much faster than the average for all occupations through 2016. The Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts that it will be the third fastest growing occupation for which a degree is not required. 2

DENTAL ASSSTNG Prerequisite : Medical Terminology Grade Level 10 Description Dental Assisting is a full year course offered to sophomores, beginning with the history of dentistry up to today s modern concept of the dental health team, while focusing on the role of each in the delivery of dental services. Professionalism in grooming, human relations, speech, and ethics are explored in relationship to the dental team, and the patients. The course encompasses basic dental anatomy, including head and neck anatomy, which ties facts and principles to practical dental situations. This course prepares the student to function on theory as well as practical applications in the development of manipulative skills. Students gain proficiency in clinical skills such as, automatic film processing, mounting dental radiographs, radiation safety, instrument identification, oral hygiene, laboratory procedures, and sterilization including OSHA guidelines. n addition, basic duties of operatory management, support, patient preparation and basic specialty procedures are covered. The prospective dental assistant student also acquires knowledge in psychology as applied to understanding the dental patient s behavior. Concentration is focused on exploring methods to aid patients in overcoming fears and anxieties about dentistry, and situations facing the dental health team in their relationship with each other.
