Product Support Notice 2007 Avaya Inc. All Rights Reserved. PSN# PSN001698u Original publication date: 05-Dec-2007. This is Issue #1, published 07- Dec-2007. Severity/risk level Medium Name of problem Modular Messaging 3.x FTP backup on Windows OS. Products affected Modular Messaging 3.x With Message Storage Server (MSS) back end. Problem description Instructions on how to configure FTP backup to a Windows server. Resolution FTP backup MSS to a Windows 2003 Server Urgency Immediate The following FTP backup configuration has been tested by Avaya Modular Messaging System Verification. It is recommended that these instructions be followed if the FTP server is based on the Windows 2003 platform. A. Setup on the Windows 2003 Server 1. Locate the FTP service (FTP Publishing Service) on the 2003 Server. Change it to automatic and start the service if it is not already running.
2. On the FTP server, create an FTP site in IIS Manager. For example, the following screen displays a newly created FTP site called Use for backups. It is recommended that you stop the default FTP site before you create a new FTP site. 3. After you have created the FTP site, click the Home Directory tab on the Use for backup Properties screen. Specify the FTP site directory in the Local path field. This directory will be created on the FTP server. When an FTP connection is established, you will be connected to this site directory. For an MSS back end, select UNIX for Directory listing style. 2007 Avaya Inc. All Rights Reserved. Page 2
4. On the FTP server, add the directory that will be used for MSS backups. In this example, the directory is called Sun. You will enter this directory name (Sun) on the MSS backup attributes page. Directories will be created under the Sun subdirectory. The directories are created during the FTP backup along with TAR files. The directories will contain the MSS backup. The directory name will contain the name of the MSS server, date and time and the year. The actual MSS messaging backup files are placed under that directory. The backup files are called messaging-1.tar, messaging-2.tar and so on. 2007 Avaya Inc. All Rights Reserved. Page 3
5. On the FTP server, add a user that will perform the MSS backup. This user must have permission to perform backups to the FTP server. This user s login and password will be entered on the MSS Remote connection web page. B. Setup on the MSS 1. Go to Remote Storage Configuration. 2. Add the host name or IP address of the Windows 2003 server. Note the back up directory location. This is the directory you created on the 2003 Server. 3. Add the user that you added on the Windows 2003 server along with the password. 4. Save your settings and do a connection test. The connection test must succeed. If it fails, then the setup is incorrect. Please go back to section A and follow through the instructions again. 2007 Avaya Inc. All Rights Reserved. Page 4
C. Testing FTP backup After the test connection succeeds, you must test FTP backup. Do this after hours if you are selecting Attended Backup as the system will stop the voicemail application. To test the backup, select Backup/Restore and then Backup. Verify that the backup completed. Then test that the restore works by completing a restore from the back up that you just completed. Check on the Windows 2003 server for the backup files.
