Program of Study Upper-division coursework required for the major will be delivered to the cohort by Appalachian. Community colleges offer lower-division courses; therefore Appalachian will normally deliver only required major Social Work courses to the cohort. Lower-division coursework (Coursework required for the CAA 44 sh core, AA or AS degree, Social Work cognate courses, or any needed elective courses) transfers from a community college or other accredited institution. It is the student s responsibility to obtain lower division coursework required for the BSW degree, and complete it by the deadline for specific courses, or before the last term of the program.

GENERAL EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS Appalachian s General Education requirements should be fulfilled outside of the cohort program by completing one of the following options: NC Community College CAA 44 semester hour core) or AA (Associate in Arts) or AS (Associate in Science) degree from a North Carolina community college A Bachelor s degree from an accredited institution will also fulfill General Education requirements Note: The AAS (Associate in Applied Science) degree alone will not fulfill general education requirements. That coursework will be evaluated on a course by course basis. You should also complete one of the options above if you hold an AAS degree.

DELIVERY OF INSTRUCTION Follow Appalachian s academic calendar, and any instructions given by your professor, not a community college academic calendar Courses will be offered only ONCE to each cohort; students must be prepared to take courses as they are made available. Modes of delivery may include: Faculty travel to the site Evening courses (typically 6:00-9:00 pm) 1-2 days per week Weekend classes may be possible for a few courses Last semester of program includes field experience, generally scheduled in the daytime, approximately 32 hours per week Web-based coursework may be part of some classes
REQUIRED GRADES A minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0 on all Appalachian coursework is required. A minimum grade of C (2.0) must be earned in each required Social Work course. (A grade of C- is not adequate.) If you receive a grade lower than a C (2.0) you should consult your academic advisor before proceeding in the BSW program. Community college grades do not transfer, only courses and credit hours. However, transfer coursework should show a grade of C (2.0) to be considered for credit at Appalachian. (Note that 48 semester hours of Appalachian credit are required for graduation with honors)

Transfer/Lower-division Coursework It is the student s responsibility to identify, register for and complete lower division coursework (CAA 44 sh core or the AA or AS degree to meet General Education requirements, Social Work cognate courses, and any necessary elective credits for the BSW degree) before the last term of the program, meeting any other required deadlines. Concurrent enrollment at Appalachian and a community college is allowed before the last term of the program, so that students may complete required lower-division coursework Official transcripts of new transfer work must be sent to Extension & Distance Education at the end of each semester
REGISTRATION FOR APPALACHIAN COURSES Registration instructions for the Fall 2011 term are included in your orientation packet. The registration system will open AUGUST 23 rd. A student must be registered for classes by the end of the drop/add period at the beginning of every semester, or financial aid will be cancelled. COSTS Tuition & Fees 2010-2011 Academic Year: $112.25 per semester hour (in-state student) $494.25 per semester hour (out-of-state student) Tuition and fees are set annually, and increases can be expected for each academic year Each course will vary in requirements for textbooks and other materials

(A student must be enrolled in at least one semester hour of Appalachian credit in a given semester to use the consortium agreement.)

GRADUATION Appalachian s commencement takes place each May and December. On- and off-campus students graduate together on the Boone campus. (Students must apply for graduation early in the semester in which they are expected to graduate.) This cohort is scheduled to graduate in May 2013
