Online Certificate/ Diploma in Education (Special/ Inclusive Education) 2012/2013 Dear Applicant, In recognition of the need to support teachers in meeting the increasing diversity of pupils needs that are currently in mainstream classes today, St Patrick s College, Drumcondra, and the Institute of Child Education and Psychology, Europe (ICEP), under the direction of the In-service Education Programme Board (St. Patrick s College) have jointly developed the Online Certificate /Diploma in Education (Special/ Inclusive Education). What is this course about? The focus of the programme is to further support the teaching and learning of pupils with special and additional learning needs primarily in mainstream classrooms, by developing teachers knowledge, skills and competencies in the area of special/inclusive education. How long does it take? The programme is delivered online and the duration is flexible to suit the needs of individual participants. The Certificate consists of four taught modules and must be completed within 3 years. The Diploma requires an additional research module (8,000 word dissertation), which must be completed within 4 years from first registration. How is it organised? The structure of the programme permits students to complete a maximum of three modules per year. The foundation module, which is mandatory for all students, focuses mainly on inclusive educational practice. Upon successful completion of this module participants will choose from a range of modules focusing on different aspects of special educational needs including: Mild General Learning Disabilities, Dyslexia, Challenging Behaviour and Autistic Spectrum Disorder. Eligibility A mandatory Induction Day will take place in St Patrick s College, Drumcondra, on 12 January 2013 from 9.30am- 3.00pm approx. Application is open to qualified teachers, at primary and post-primary level, who hold a recognised qualification from an awarding institution in Ireland or elsewhere. Consideration will also be given to: Graduates (with experience of working in an educational, training or educational-related professional context). or Those holding equivalent qualifications with significant experience of working in an educational, training or educational-related professional context. STUDENTS MAY PURSUE ONLY ONE COURSE OF STUDY IN St. PATRICK S COLLEGE AT ANY GIVEN TIME.

What do you need? In order to participate in the programme, applicants will need access to a computer, with headset and microphone, and internet access. Broadband access is strongly recommended. Familiarity with the internet and email is an expected requirement. How do you apply? Credits from the Certificate in Education (Special/ Inclusive Education) 20 European Credit Transfers (ECTS) can be used towards the Diploma in Education- 30 ECTS. Credits from the Diploma in Education (Special/Inclusive Education) 30 ECTS may be put towards the Masters in Special Education (MSEN) or to other Masters Programmes. All programmes at Masters level are valued at 90 credits. Acceptance on these programmes is subject to certain conditions, including the attainment of a sufficiently high standard in the Diploma and the availability of places on the varying programmes at Masters level within the college. How much is it? There will be a fee of 750 per module. Tax refunds can be claimed against all fees paid. In addition, support for course fee payment can be applied for through the Refund of Fees Scheme.
