Heritage Stone Restorations Tender Restoration Proposal For James Martin Statue Gawler

28 th November 2013 Town of Gawler, Att. Tony Haynes, 89 Murray Street, Gawler, SA 5118. Dear Tony, RE: James Martin Statue Gawler We thank you for inviting HSR to tender for the above project as follows:- Restoration of James Martin Statue Gawler Preliminaries including scaffolding & hoarding Jos cleaning to statue and plinth Indent & Bankering (carving) repairs to shoulder, coat, nose & finger as noted on photos supplied Minor Indent & Bankering (carving) repairs not noted on photos Removal of existing pointing & repointing of plinth Resin injection to 2 x fractures around plinth For further information please do not hesitate to contact me on (08) 8340 7014 Kind Regards, Will Allen Estimator

Methodology for repair of James Martin statue Scaffolding & hoarding The statue will require scaffolding due to its height, we will allow for 2 levels of boards at 2 & 4 metres to allow us access to the statue. We will also allow for a hoarding around the scaffold with a lockable door to keep the general public away from the works. Jos cleaning To remove existing dirt & grime etc. we would clean the statue with our Jos cleaner. The JOS light abrasive, microcleaning system is a chemical-free system used for the cleaning of stone including facades & statues, removal of graffiti and brick cleaning without damage to joints or the surface being cleaned. This is a low-pressure, micro-abrasive cleaning technology designed for the sensitive restoration of facades and monuments. The nozzle projects a low-pressure swirl of air, water and inert, micro-fine mineral powder to clean surfaces gently and effectively without damage to the substrate. Using interchangeable nozzle tips and turbines, this versatile system easily applies itself to the specific cleaning task, whether it be intricate architectural detail involved or brickwork. Although most often used as a wet process, this vortex nozzle can easily be used by regulating the air pressure, micro-abrasive flow rate, water volume and nozzle distance from the object/substrate to be cleaned. The technique can be adjusted to meet the unique demands of each and every cleaning task. Whether the surface to be cleaned is brick, concrete, metal or wood, the cleaning process can be used to remove gypsum crust, micro-organism, smoke damage and graffiti. From the architectural detail to the largest façade, this system has got what it takes to clean and restore, in a manner that causes no damage to the surface, just about any substrate and it is safe for the applicator and the surrounding environment. We have recently used this to clean the Queen Victoria Statue and Elder Hall at Adelaide University. If the council wished to view a finished project we would recommend to visit Elder Hall as it is accessible to the public. Indenting & Bankering To repair the damaged areas we will indent a piece of similar stone (Granite or Marble) by cutting out the damaged area using hand tools. We then place new section of stone with stainless steel pins & epoxy resin. Then one of our banker masons will carve the indented piece to match the original photos. Repointing We will remove the existing damaged pointing from the Granite plinth and repoint with Lime mortar to match the original stone. Fracture repair To repair the fractures in the granite plinth we will inject an epoxy resin to hold the fracture together then point the crack with lime mortar to match the existing stone.

Similar works The following projects whilst being buildings include all the processes to restore the James Martin statue, including Jos cleaning, indenting, hand carving and repointing. Victoria Square Redevelopment works (Current) Currently we are working with Fulton Hogan in the redevelopment of the Victoria Square, where we have been contracted to complete the heritage works. This consists of the dismantling, restoration and reconstructing the Queen Victoria Statue and the Three Rivers Fountain. Both these works will require Jos cleaning and repointing once reconstructed. The Queen Victoria statue scaffolded in our workshop

Elder Hall This involved the replacement of the centre finial, cleaning using the JOS cleaning method, roof replacement, stone replacement, parapet and flèche repairs. This finial was carved by Phillip Allen who is a Banker/Fixer mason who spent many hours on the details required. The finial was copied from a 1930 s photograph. Phillip Allen will be the mason who will restore the James Martin Statue

St Francis Xavier Cathedral The construction of the Sacristy Building from Kanmantoo bluestone and Waikerie limestone, including specialised stone carving.
