Healthcare Challenges 2010 - Clinical End User Adoption With the recent release of the final HITECH Meaningful Use criteria and the increase in health system adoption of new clinical systems and EHR capabilities, more nurses and physicians today are confronted with the challenge to effectively use clinical systems they perceive as difficult to use. Unnecessary delays in the care delivery process can be minimized so that the goals of improved quality of care through more effective application use are realized. Many studies have shown that provider adoption remains one of the greatest barriers to realizing the full benefits of mature clinical systems. Through easy to use applications and minimal administrative steps, physicians and nurses will be able to see more patients while becoming far more efficient and effective in treating their existing ones. Simplified use of CPOE for medications, Clinical Documentation, Results Inquiry along with Medication Administration and Medication Reconciliation programs at point of care can be implemented. These capabilities beg for easy to use end user devices, logon/logoff and quick access to only those applications required by a given provider. Recent experience indicates that between 30-45 minutes per shift can be saved by each clinician through more efficient access to needed end user devices and clinical applications. Unified Medical Solutions (UMS) is completely focused on helping Health Systems solve these end user challenges with innovative approaches and highly reliable end user device implementations. Innovative End User Solutions - Provider Efficiency & Effectiveness With the advances made in identity management, access management, proximity technologies, virtual server and virtual desktop technologies over the past 5 years, the integration of these diverse technology products in innovative ways allow more efficient end user use of clinical and EHR products. Few health systems today have simplified access to their EHR and departmental systems to be as simple as an ATM withdrawal. Unified Medical Solutions has proven its ability to assist health systems to dramatically re-engineer their end user experiences, workflows and associated provider productivity. Clinical systems must be intuitive and simple to navigate. The UCare solution from UMS is a technology architecture combined with new care workflow processes to promote and enable point of care information review and collection. Nurses, Physicians and departmental clinicians are now able to interact with advanced clinical systems without the inefficient and confusing navigation of non-intuitive systems multiple logins/passwords, application timeouts, and immediate access to user applications. Additionally, UCare goes one step further to simplify use of new more accessible end user devices in new care setting locations (including in the patient s room). Clinicians are now able to benefit from and more easily feed information into clinical applications where and when they need to access them. While UCare is primarily technology architecture and an integration solution, the UMS team works closely with your clinical staff to identify the critical areas and departments for UCare deployment. Working closely with nurses, physicians and department heads, UMS will identify and recommend new devices, new care workflows and simplified access to all applications used by each clinician. 3

UMS also continues to regularly expand its partnership with leading technology vendors supporting advanced product features and vendor participation in all major UMS projects. A quick scan of the recent client successes indicates the value of this approach: Chester County Hospital, West Chester, Pa. CCH recently went live on a deployment of UCare which began across the Maternity Child Care Departments. The project included a comprehensive clinical end user computing strategy, device selection and deployment process which resulted in in-room arms and devices being implemented within all patient rooms to provide ubiquitous access to patient records at the point of care. A server based desktop computing model was selected for the virtual desktop which supported all clinical applications across all clinical departments including Siemens Medication Administration Checking (MAK), Siemens Soarian EMR, Siemens EDM and other departmental clinical applications. All nursing station, COWs and in-room devices were implemented to support UCare RFID 4
authentication methods and each application was enabled for single sign-on providing an easy roaming desktop tap-in/tap-out experience for users across all UCare enabled devices. CCH quickly and effectively deployed UCare across all care settings, even into the Radiology department where tapin/tap-out technology is now universally in place. Community Medical Center, Scranton, PA UMS has provided strategic and technical consulting and managed services to CMC for many years and has been actively involved with the operational support and implementation of many critical IT infrastructure and end user computing technologies. CMC recently began to move towards the UCare solution in support of its imminent EHR selection and implementation initiative. CMC recognizes the need and value of the UCare solutions approach as a necessary step towards a successful EHR implementation and meeting meaningful use measures. UMS is currently engaged in the upgrade of the existing pervasive Citrix Presentation Server environment to XenApp6 and XenDesktop which will serve as the virtual desktop foundation for the full UCare solution. Pocono Health System, East Stroudsburg, PA PMC recently engaged UMS in a comprehensive UCare solution initiative for a new End User Computing architecture that began with a strategic assessment and a design. UMS is currently engaged in the pilot implementation phase of the project. The PMC UCare solution includes the implementation of new technologies: virtual desktop infrastructure, a distributed desktop virtualization solution, single sign-on, access management, password management, workspace management, printer management, RFID readers and ID badges. UCare Beneficiaries CMO, CNO, Clinical Providers As UCare is primarily designed and built to simplify clinician access to their role specific applications, it has the potential to benefit most, if not all, clinician communities.
