linköping university SWEDEN Faculty of Educational Sciences Linköping University LiU EXPANDING REALITY

Linköping University Fullscale teacher training Linköping University in Sweden provides a comprehensive teacher education and offers postgraduate training, as well as opportunities for research. Teacher training is available for all levels of the Swedish school and pre-school system and teacher students come into contact with local schools from the very start. Almost all subject areas are represented, such as natural and social sciences, special education, modern languages, outdoor education, crafts. Typical for Educational Sciences is vocational education and qualification, student placement from the first course element, close cooperation with local schools and research closely linked to the Swedish school system. Exchange students have an opportunity to engage in comparative educational studies, explore the educational system in Sweden and meet fellow students at Linköping University. Exchange students may choose from a range of courses taught in English, including placement in local schools. The teachers within the faculty have long experience from teacher education. Peer students are on hand to answer questions about placements, such as dress code and etiquette or questions regarding student life. Advanced level Two master s programmes are taught in English: Adult Learning and Global Change, 60 credits and Outdoor Environmental Education and Outdoor Life, 60 credits. Swedish language courses for master s students and exchange students are also offered. Research Within the Faculty of Educational Sciences, research on teaching and learning is carried out from several perspectives. Research is linked to undergraduate education and deals with child, youth and adult learning, as well as teaching at all levels from pre-school to university. A cross-subject, interdisciplinary thematic approach characterises the research at Linköping University. LiU in outline 27 000 undergraduate students 160 education programmes, 35 taught in English 3 campus 3 900 employees 400 professors 1300 doctoral students

Best in class Following the full marks received in the nationwide overhaul of teacher education, Linköping University teacher training continues its successful stay at the top. The number of first-choice applicants for LiU s autumn 2013 teacher education courses has increased by 5 %, compared to the year before. We are very happy with the way things are developing in general. A lot of people want to be teachers, says Karin Mårdsjö Blume, Dean of Educational Sciences. Many want to work with younger children. There has been a rush of applications for pre-school teachers and leisure-time centre teachers this year. For the latter group the number of first-choice applicants increased by somewhat exceptional 46 %. When it comes to lower secondary and upper secondary school teachers, Linköping University can note an explicit rise of interest in teaching the English language. The current debate in Sweden concerning the need to strengthen the teaching of Mathematics at all school levels has most probably contributed to the largely increased number of applicants for Mathematics. The figures for the 2013 application period are well in accordance to the reviews made by the National Agency of Higher Education, praising teacher education at Linköping University as being both relevant and research-based. In addition, the institution has well established networks for research and close dialogue with schools, both nationally and internationally. This confirms the long and strong tradition of teacher education at Linköping University.

Satisfied international students International students are satisfied with Linköping University. The university is among the top five out of 193 around the globe in the online benchmark survey International Student Barometer (ISB) 2012. Top-10 in Sweden The Pre-school Education Programme at LiU is one of the country s ten most sought-after training courses. This programme has done unusually well as compared to other institutions of learning in Sweden.

MASTER S PROGRAMMES IN ENGLISH Adult Learning and Global Change, 60 credits Part-time, distance learning. Intended for professionals who need to understand learning and global change. Four universities in four continents collaborate to deliver the programme; Linköping University, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, University of Western Cape, Cape Town and Monash University, Melbourne. You are one of 11 student teachers who went to Kenya and arranged a conference on the theme Ways out of poverty. How did this come about? We are going to be secondary school teachers and we are studying advanced social studies for one year. The course offers the possibility of doing a field study to gain insight into global relations. We spent nearly three weeks in Kenya, visiting different schools, getting insight into global relations and studying local communities. In conjunction with the field study we organised this conference together with Nairobi University. We planned it before we set off. Outdoor Environmental Education and Outdoor Life, 60 credits Full-time, campus based. This programme will clarify how outdoor environmental education can contribute to sustainable development and environmental health. I have experienced new things every day, even the frustrating little things that come with being an outsider. I can already see that I m taking more initiative to participate in new things. And I ve had loads of teaching feedback. I have had four mentors and they have all been brilliant. New module in special needs LiU offers a course for remedial teachers for children with learning disabilities, an initiative that has proved very popular with more than three first-choice applicants per place. Since there is already a lack of Special Education teachers, it is especially gratifying that LiU can contribute new teachers who want to work with a category of young people in great need of support, says Dean Karin Mårdsjö Blume.

Research making a difference Research environments at the Faculty of Educational Sciences include disciplinary research in Education and interdisciplinary research in the following fields: Adult and Popular Education, Pedagogic Practices, Science and Technology Education. In the field of teaching and learning in school the researchers focus on literacy and literacy education, mathematic learning and education, special education, educational assessment and academic motivation. Research in the field of Pedagogic practices is conducted in several departments at Linköping University. In the field of social relations and values in school the research group focuses on a wide range of issues, such as bullying, classroom management, moral and democratic practices in school, teacher ethics, values education, school rules, classroom interactions, and conflict management. Research collaboration is going on with colleagues in USA, Australia, Canada and England. Adult and Popular Education research Linköping University is the most prominent site for research on Adult Education as well as Popular Education (Folkbildning) in Sweden. Internationalization is also very strong through the work within the Intercontinental Master s Programme in Adult Learning and Global Change. The Department of Social and Welfare Studies focuses on research in and about pre-school, school, and on teacher education, presently in two main areas: Normality and identity in pre-school and school, ICT and learning in pre-school and school.
