Cisco 7 Series Product Overview Cisco 7 series routers are designed for today s most mission-critical internetworks because they combine Cisco Systems proven software technology with reliability, availability, serviceability and exceptional performance features. Cisco 7 series provides information system professionals with the flexibility they need to meet the constantly changing requirements at the core and distribution points of their internetworks. Cisco 7 series includes the following models: Cisco 7 Cisco 7 Cisco 76. Cisco 7 routers provide routing and bridging for a wide variety of protocols and network media. Port and Service adapters are connected to PCI buses (peripheral component interconnect) on Cisco 7 routers, enabling connection to external networks. Cisco 7 series supports any combination of Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, Token Ring, FDDI, ATM, serial, ISDN, and HSSI interfaces. For detailed information about port adapters, see the Port Adapters and Service Adapters for the Cisco 7 Family chapter. Cisco 7 series routers run the industry-leading Cisco IOS networking software, which assures robust, reliable internetworks by supporting both LAN and WAN protocols; provides optimized network services including security, quality of service, and traffic management; and enables centralized, integrated, and automated internetwork installation and management. Cisco 7 series offers IOS feature sets that can be customized as well as upgraded to meet changing requirements. Key Features and Benefits Online software reconfiguration. Cisco 7 series routers allow software configuration changes to occur without rebooting or interrupting network applications and services. Online insertion and removal (OIR) of port adapters and service adapters. Cisco 7 series routers automatically reconfigure like-port adapters, which enables seamless upgrades to higher density and new port adapters without the need for rebooting, taking the system offline, or operator intervention. Fast boot. Cisco 7 series routers come online quickly after software upgrades (5 seconds is typical), minimizing the impact on your network. Environmental monitoring. Cisco 7 series routers alert you when potentially problematic system fluctuations occur before they become critical, thereby enabling resolution while the system remains online. Self-diagnostics and tools. Cisco 7 series routers perform self-tests to ensure all modules are operational before going online, to avoid potential network problems at the outset. Optional dual power supply systems, AC- or DC-input. Cisco 7 series routers extend individual power supplies by load sharing. Flash memory. Cisco 7 series routers enable fast, reliable software and microcode updates, which allows internetwork management from a single, centralized location, and eliminates the need for physically visiting each router site when updating software or microcode.
