Student User Guide Introduction to the Module Management System (MMS) in Philosophy Logging in; Submitting work; Logging out Revised Oct 2008 (version 3.1P) University of St Andrews

MMS Student Guide MMS Introduction MMS is a web-based Module Management System that provides a set of facilities for online administration of teaching and learning. In particular you will use the system to upload your practical work, gain access to your grades, view your tutorial and lecture attendance and access any required resources. This guide serves as a step-by-step introduction to familiarise you with the system. The main tools are Coursework submission: an interface for uploading files for assessment and viewing awarded grades and appended comments; Tutorial Attendance Record System [TAS]: a web page displaying your tutorial attendance for a given module; You should refer to your course handbook for the detailed requirements connected with each of these for your particular module. Accessing the system 1. Start your web browser e.g. Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator. 2. Enter the MMS web address: https://www.st-and.ac.uk/mms/. This will take you to the following window: 3. Enter Your University username and password (issued by IT Services), selecting University from the Account drop down menu. Most of the time you won't need to change what it shows in the 'Account' box; but do be sure to check it if you have difficulty logging in. 4. Click on Login. You should not be getting a notice from the browser about certificates. If you do, then check you have gone to the correct website. 5. The browser will then display a Resources page similar to the following, listing links to the resource tools available for your particular module(s): Sept 2008 2 Version 3.1P

MMS Student Guide 6. The most common module related links on this page are: Coursework submission: use this link to upload your assignments or practical work and to view your marks; Tutorial Attendance and/or Lecture Attendance: view your tutorial and lecture attendance record; Resources: use this link to access associated files. 7. The icon for the Modules page is displayed in the toolbar at the top of a page. Click this to return to your Modules page from other pages within MMS. 8. Within some parts of MMS, the toolbar at the top is split into two pars with a bar. The three icons to the right of the bar are always there, and the icons to the left are specific to the current part of MMS. The Coursework tool From the Modules page select the required Coursework link (labelled Coursework Submission). The figure below shows a sample Assignments page. Each row is referred to as a slot and pertains to a specific assignment as designated by the Slot Name column. Sept 2008 3 Version 3.1P

MMS Student Guide The slot details the following information for each file uploaded: The Due Date is the date by which the file must be uploaded to MMS and after which late penalties may be applied. The Acknowledge Date is the date by which comments/grades will be appended by your tutor. Date posted refers to the date a file was uploaded to MMS. The Comment link allows you to append a comment to a slot. The appended comment will appear as a link in the Acknowledgements column. The Grade column will contain the assessment posted by your tutor for the submitted work. Submitting files to MMS Uploading a document to a defined slot 1. From the main Resources page, select the coursework submissions link. Only one file may be uploaded to a given slot. This must be either a Word document (doc, not docx), or Rich Text (rtf), or Adobe PDF (pdf). 2. Scroll to the slot that you require (eg essay 1, essay 2). The Introduction slot is chosen as an example below: 3. In the File column click the Browse... button (or the 'Choose file' button if using a Safari browser). This will take you to a navigation window. Use this window to locate the file you wish to upload. Select the file and click Open. The chosen file will then appear in the Filename slot on the screen. 4. Click on the Upload button in the slot to upload the file to the slot. MMS will automatically assign a filename to the document you are uploading. The filename will consist of your username followed by the particular slot name. MMS will send you an email receipt acknowledging the upload of the file to the system. Sept 2008 4 Version 3.1P

MMS Student Guide 5. To delete an uploaded file from a slot, click on the bin icon to delete the file and start again. The bin icon will only be available until the date the assignment is due, after which you must contact your tutor if the file is to be removed and/or replaced. Late Submissions Assessed work is to be submitted by the posted Due Date and time as stated on the page. Files uploaded to MMS after the deadline will be subject to penalties which will be applied to the posted grade when the work is assessed. See the philosophy undergraduate handbook for details of penalties. Downloading files from MMS To retrieve a file previously uploaded to MMS, go the required slot on the coursework tool and click on the filename. The file will be downloaded to the default location on your machine. You may download an archive of all files you have uploaded to a Coursework resource on MMS. At the top of a Coursework page is the link Download archive of all work on this page. This will download a compressed archive of all files currently stored on the MMS server. Logging out To logout of MMS click on the logout icon in the top right of your window. This will take you back to the login screen. Always logout when you are using shared computers. MMS will log out automatically after approximately 10 minutes inactivity. Sept 2008 5 Version 3.1P
