Traditionally, the Netherlands is a country in which many migrants settle. Sometimes people come to the Netherlands because they are driven out of their own country due to war, drought or a shortage of food. Others come to join family members who already live here and yet others are looking for a better economic perspective. These migrants continue to feel a link with their country of origin and some of them seriously consider remigrating.the Netherlands Migration Institute (NMI) helps them answer the question: Shall I remain in the Netherlands or shall I return? NMI is specialised in issues related to the voluntary - either definitive or temporary - return to the country of origin.

I have lived in the Netherlands for almost 30 years and I have always worked hard as a cook in various Chinese restaurants. I attended an informative meeting of NMI in The Hague. There I received clear information regarding the options of returning to China. I would like to go back, as my mother and sisters still live in Hongkong. Will I actually leave? I still have to think hard about that. Kan (52, China)

There are many reasons for people to consider remigration. Older migrants often want to spend their remaining years in their country of origin as it is where they were brought up and where they feel completely at home. People from younger generations often go in search of their roots or for new economic opportunities in the country of their parents birth. Refugees can consider migrating from one country to the next: leaving for a third country to build up a new life there. Make a well-founded decision NMI offers migrants information and support in all areas that are related to voluntary remigration. This allows the people to make their own wellfounded and sound choice for the country in which they want to live, work or retire. Within the context of remigration, NMI provides information related to residence permits, benefits, pensions, insurance, guardianship, debts, healthcare and education. The client s individual situation is always the focus and the position of (co)- remigrating women and children is given special attention. If the migrant makes a final decision to leave, NMI offers professional help and support when preparing for and dealing with administrative issues.

NMI, for questions related to remigration Annually, more than 10,000 migrants call upon the services of NMI. NMI is an independent foundation. The service that NMI provides is easily accessible and free. NMI has its main office in Utrecht. At various locations throughout the Netherlands, NMI organises consulting hours. Migrants who want to receive advice by telephone, can call the Remigration information line T (030) 236 42 45 or ask a question via www.nmigratie.nl/vragen. On request, NMI organises informative meetings for groups.

Sharing information When invited by groups of migrants, migrant organisations or Dutch institutes that work a lot with migrants, NMI arranges group informative sessions. The Remigratiewet (Remigration Act) and its opportunities, but also the conditions that it sets if a claim is made on the various remigration provisions, are addressed in such a session. Many migrants wish to share their doubts regarding staying in the Netherlands or returning to their native country with others. NMI ensures that the correct information is available. During the informative group sessions, there is always time to ask questions and to get a professional response from NMI. For more personal issues, migrants are welcome to consult an NMI office. Not only before, but also after leaving, people can address their questions regarding remigration-related issues to the NMI RemigrantenDesk (RemigrantsDesk). This can be done via the Remigration information line T +31 30 236 42 45, by sending a fax F +31 30 230 49 32 or by e-mailing to remigrant@nmigratie.nl. Working in the country of origin NMI supports migrants who want to work on the development and redevelopment of their country of origin. The knowledge and experience gained in the Netherlands will in this way end up in social organisations in these countries. The experience of working in a person s country of origin then acts as an investment in the person s further career in the Dutch labour market. In addition, NMI works to ensure that people from abroad can gain temporary work experience in the Netherlands. This in fact concerns a new form of development cooperation. Together with African migrants who want to work for social organisations in Africa, NMI has established a number of projects. When doing so, NMI continually searches for collaboration with migrant organisations at home and abroad and it consults with governmental authorities at the national, European and global level that work in this field.

The Remigratiewet (Remigration Act) The Remigratiewet (Remigration Act) offers facilities to people who have insufficient resources to independently remigrate to their country of origin, to make this return possible. Migrants and their offspring in the target groups of the minorities policy, as well as those with a refugee status, as long as they meet the conditions set in the Remigratiewet, qualify for these facilities. In practice, this mainly concerns older, long-term unemployed migrant workers and people with a refugee status who are so remote from the Dutch labour market that they must permanently rely on benefits.
