2 Student Veterans and the Military Admission Process As of August 2009, the Post 9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act of 2008 will provide more than 2 million veterans the opportunity to attend college full time. 3 Student Veterans and the Military Admission Process But it is going to require more than enhanced benefits to ensure that our nation s returning veterans can attain a college education. Many may not even enroll because of an absence of easily accessible information, effective outreach, and veteran-friendly practices. 4 UNCW Military Admissions Expanded Definition of Transfer Student Credit for Military Training and Experience Military Admissions Website Partnerships with Area Community Colleges

5 Transfer Students We expanded our definition of transfer student to better assist active duty and veteran students who do not meet UNCW traditional admission requirements. Allow for full credit for and consideration of their military service. If served two or more years, apply as transfer student based on training and experience reported on military transcripts.

6 Military Credit In addition to high school and college credit (if completed) we also consider years of service, rank, and type/level of training. Award general or departmental elective credit based on ACE recommendations reported on military transcripts.

7 Military Admissions Website The UNCW Office of Admissions created a Military Admissions website ( Prospective students can view information specific to active duty/veterans and/or military dependents. We established primary points of contact in all Enrollment Management and Student Services offices with names, phone numbers and addresses provided at the website.

8 Community Colleges Partnerships Recognizing that some students may need to begin their studies at a community college, we established partnerships with our area community colleges: 1. Established points of contact at each institution for admissions, financial aid, registrar and student support services. 2. Admission contracts for each prospective student that specifically outlines what courses will need to be completed in order to assure admission to UNCW.

Within the university through the Military Task Force, comprised of representatives from every major administrative and academic area. Throughout the region through our Military Advisory Board whose members include UNCW administrators, area politicians, and commanding officers from the area bases.
