4 Conference Speakers Conference Speakers (continued) Nicholas Christakis, M.D., Ph.D., M.P.H. a pioneer researcher on the implications of social network theory for healthcare, and one of Time s Top 100 Most Influential People in the world. His research on social networks with James Fowler has been featured in Time s Year in Medicine (twice), and in Harvard Business Review s Breakthrough Business Ideas. Science magazine dubbed Christakis and Fowler the dynamic duo. Their book Connected: The Surprising Power of Our Social Networks and How They Shape Our Lives has been translated into 20 languages, named an Editor s Choice by the New York Times Book Review, and featured in Wired, Oprah s Reading Guide, Business Week s Best Books of the Year, as well as a cover story in the New York Times Magazine. Christakis holds the degrees of MD, PhD, and MPH, and is Professor of Health Care Policy, Sociology and Medicine at Harvard University. Rob Cross, Ph.D. is an associate professor of management at the University of Virginia where he directed The Network Roundtable, a consortium of 100 organizations sponsoring research on network applications to critical management issues. His research focuses on how relationships and informal networks in organizations can be analyzed and improved to promote performance and innovation. Rob has worked directly with more than 300 strategically important networks across a wide range of well-known organizations in consulting, pharmaceuticals, software, electronics and computer manufacturers, consumer products, financial services, petroleum, heavy equipment manufacturing, chemicals, and government. Ideas emerging from his research have resulted in three books, four book chapters and over 50 articles, several of which have won awards. In addition to top scholarly outlets, his work has been published in Harvard Business Review, Sloan Management Review, California Management Review, Academy of Management Executive and Organizational Dynamics. His most recent books, Driving Results Through Social Networks (Jossey-Bass) and The Hidden Power of Social Networks (Harvard Business School Press), have been featured in venues such as Fortune, BusinessWeek, The Financial Times, Time Magazine, The Wall Street Journal, CIO, Inc and Fast Company. Bill Pasmore, Ph.D. is a Senior Vice President and Organizational Practice Leader for the Center for Creative Leadership. An international authority in organizational leadership, Bill joined the Center for Creative Leadership (CCL ) in January 2008 in the newly created role of Organizational Practice Leader. As Senior Vice President in this role, he leads CCL s efforts to help clients develop the larger organizational leadership systems that increase their overall performance and enable their individual leaders to thrive. Prior to joining CCL, Bill served as a partner in the Corporate Learning & Organizational Development Practice of the consulting firm Oliver Wyman Delta. While there, he headed the global research practice and worked personally with top executives of Fortune 500 companies on organizational architecture and development as well as succession planning, talent management, and strategic planning. His global clients, spanned numerous business sectors, included Bristol-Myers Squibb, Compuware, United Airlines, Hewlett Packard, Kimberly Clark, Unilever, and The New York Times. Previously, Bill was a tenured full professor from in the Weatherhead School of Management at Case Western Reserve University, where he taught courses in the school s MBA, Executive MBA, Ph.D. and Executive Ph.D. programs. He directed the school s Master s Degree program in Organization Development and served as a visiting professor at INSEAD and Stanford University. He also headed his own consulting firm, Pasmore & Associates, which offered public workshops on organization design and supported efforts in organizations to bring about large-scale change. He co-founded the SIGMA program (Social Innovations in Global Management), which provides leadership and managerial training to socially responsible not-for-profit organizations around the world. Chris Ernst, Ph.D. is a Senior Faculty member in CCL s Organizational Leadership Practice, chartered to ac celerate organizational impact through talent, strategy, and culture. He is also a recognized thought leader in developing collaborative leadership capabilities so that individuals and organizations can thrive in an interdependent world, and has honed his research and practice through 14 years of service with CCL. Chris focuses on translating research-based ideas into modules, tools, and applications. By integrating research knowledge with real-world experience, Chris has a unique ability to create innovative, practical leadership solutions to meet pressing client challenges. Chris holds a Ph.D. in industrial and organizational psychology from North Carolina State University. His thought leadership is widely published in articles, book chapters, the popular press, and as a sought-after speaker at leading organizational and conference events. He is coauthor of two books, Boundary Spanning Leadership: Six Practices for Solving Problems, Driving Innovation, and Transforming Organizations (McGraw-Hill Professional) and Success for the New Global Manager: How to Work Across Distance, Countries, and Cultures (Jossey-Bass/Wiley). Jennifer Martineau, Ph.D. serves as Group Director of Global Research and Innovation, Organizational Leadership, for the Center for Creative Leadership. In this role, she has the pleasure and honor of representing the fine work of the Center s research, psychometrics, evaluation, and innovation around the world. At the Center since 1993, Jennifer played a foundational role in establishing its evaluation practice through the creation of a 360-degree evaluation assessment, designing and launching an evaluation framework used to guide evaluation studies, and serving as lead evaluator on many leadership development evaluation projects. Her clients include international for-profit and not-for-profit organizations, school systems, and government agencies. Jennifer earned a doctoral degree in industrial and organizational psychology from the Pennsylvania State University. She is a member of the American Evaluation Association, the American Society for Training and Development, and the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology, and serves on committees and task forces in these organizations. Jennifer is a regular presenter at national and international professional conferences, is published in both peer-reviewed and other publications, and has recently co-edited CCL s The Handbook of Leadership Development Evaluation and the second edition of CCL s Evaluating the Impact of Leadership Development.
5 Leading in a Connected World Panelists Boundary Spanning Leadership Panelists (continued) Tracy Cox Tracy Cox is director of performance consulting for Raytheon Professional Services LLC (RPS), a subsidiary of Raytheon Company. As director of performance consulting, Cox works with organizations to help them uncover their true worth through application of organizational network analysis, enhanced decision making techniques, innovation and Raytheon Six Sigma. Prior to his current responsibilities, Cox was the faculty lead for the Raytheon Leadership Institute, responsible for coordinating and delivering the Strategic Leadership Program to over 6000 Raytheon leaders. Tracy will discuss how Raytheon has used network ideas over the past decade and a half to drive leadership effectiveness and organizational performance. Mindy Levy,Ph.D Mindy L. Levy, PhD has over 20 years of experience in all phases of organizational management, with a particular focus in leadership and human capital transformation. She currently manages Booz Allen Hamilton s organizational development and executive coaching programs. In the past year, her team has implemented network analysis across several of Booz Allen s leadership programs to help leaders identify and strategically manage their networks for increased performance and results. Dr. Levy holds a Ph.D. in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from The George Washington University, a B.S. in Organizational Management from The University of Pennsylvania Wharton School of Business, and a B.A. in Psychology from the University of Pennsylvania. Mindy will review how Booz Allen is driving network ideas and thinking into a range of talent and leadership initiatives. Angela Gemperle, Ph.D. Angela Gemperle, PhD is Director of Diversity & Inclusion (D&I) at Novartis Institutes for Biological Research (NIBR). She works at the interface of HR and D&I, focusing on organizational development, metrics and cultural initiatives, along with leadership coaching. Angela received her PhD in Neuropharmacology at the University of Basel, School of Pharmacy, Switzerland. Following several years of experience as a scientific medical editor, she entered the field of Human Resources at Novartis in Angela will describe initiatives to foster collaboration and innovation within Novartis highly successful 6500 person Institute for BioMedical Research. Ginny Ertl Ginny Ertl is vice president of Training and Development for GE Consumer Finance, an organization that spans five regions and has 32,000 employees. As global training leader, she is responsible for creating a global learning community that emulates the way GE runs its various businesses. Ginny is focused on creating a virtual global learning center, a one-stop-shopping spot for training courses worldwide. Ginny will discuss how GE, Crotonville is using Boundary Spanning Leadership and Organizational Network concepts to drive officer leadership development efforts globally. Courtney Harrison Courtney Harrison is currently the senior director of leadership effectiveness at Juniper Networks, headquartered in Sunnyvale, CA. At Juniper, Courtney is responsible for the leadership development and succession planning for the vice president and above population. Prior to joining Juniper she was senior faculty member at the Center for Creative Leadership (CCL). Prior to CCL, Courtney was the Chief of Human Resources and events services for the United States Olympic Committee (USOC) leading up the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. Additionally, she was the Vice President, Global Executive Assimilation and Development for American Express in New York City responsible for designing leadership development strategies and succession planning for the top level business leaders. Courtney will describe initiatives to foster interdependent and boundary spanning leadership within its Executive Leadership ranks. Interdependent Creative Commons The Creative Commons is designed to help co-create new methods, tools and frameworks, and a research agenda for an era of interdependent leadership by integrating thought leadership in boundary spanning and network analysis. The Commons is intended to be an interactive context where organizations can apply and develop key concepts and tools around interdependent leadership together. Powered by the combined thought leadership of its members in partnership with CCL, Rob Cross, and Activate Networks, the Creative Commons is expected to significantly contribute to the effectiveness of organizations and systems by rapidly researching and prototyping new approaches. Boundary Spanning Leadership Panelists Staying Connected Robert Burnside Robert Burnside leads employee education for Ketchum, a global public relations firm. Ketchum has about 1100 employees around the globe. Before joining Ketchum, Burnside guided Corporate University Xchange s (CUX s) conferences, consulting, and research programs, such as Voice of the Marketplace: e-learners Speak Out, a survey of more than 4100 e-learners in the UK, Canada, and the United States that identified four psychographic segments of e-learners (career builders, compliant learners, hobbyists, and students). Burnside has extensive insight into evolving trends in e-learning in particular and adult education in general.
