The program features the traditional streams dedicated to children s issues and property matters along with a practical skills stream that includes workshops on advocacy and drafting. 3 Presenters The Honourable Justice Ann Ainslie-Wallace Family Court of Australia, Appeal Division The Honourable Justice Ann Ainslie- Wallace graduated Bachelors of Arts/ Laws from the University of NSW in She was admitted to the NSW Bar in December 1978 and practised as a barrister until her appointment to the bench of the District Court of NSW in July In 2010, she was appointed to the Appeals Division of the Family Court of Australia. While at the bar her principal area of practice concerned family law and children s law. She pioneered the role of counsel for the child in family law proceedings that permitted the separate representation of children in proceedings affecting their welfare. She appeared for children in proceedings under the Child Welfare legislation of NSW and was briefed by DOCS in NSW to prosecute difficult first instance cases. The Honourable Justice Murray Aldridge Family Court of Australia Aldridge J holds a Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Economics from the University of Sydney. He was admitted as a barrister of the Supreme Court of New South Wales in At the bar he developed a broad-based commercial and equity practice, with a strong focus on corporate and personal insolvency and corporations generally. He appeared in a number of significant appeals in the Family Court of Australia. In 1999, Aldridge J was appointed Senior Counsel. He was a member of the Insolvency and Reconstruction Section of the Law Council of Australia and is an instructor at the Australian Advocacy Institute and was on the Professional Conduct Committee for the New South Wales Bar Association and the Advocacy Specialist Accreditation Committee for the Law Society of New South Wales. He was appointed to the Family Court of Australia on 13 December Judge Tom Altobelli Federal Circuit Court of Australia After 25 years in practice Dr Tom Altobelli was appointed as a Federal Magistrate on 13 November 2006 and is currently sitting as one of seven Judges of the Federal Circuit Court in the Family Law Courts in Sydney. He holds a Master of Laws and Doctorate in Juridical Science and is an Adjunct Professor in the School of Law, University of Western Sydney. Before his appointment, Judge Altobelli was accredited as a specialist in the areas of family law, children s law and mediation. He was, formerly, Special Counsel at Watts McCray Lawyers, Australia s largest family law firm and an Associate Professor at the University of Western Sydney. He was also a member of the Executive of the Family Law Section of the Law Council of Australia. He has authored four books on family law and dispute resolution as well as 50 articles in Australian and international journals. Judge Altobelli is the Convenor of the Court s Working Party on Best Practice in Children s Cases. Martin Bartfeld QC Victorian Bar Martin graduated from Monash University with a Bachelor of Jurisprudence and Bachelor of Laws in He was admitted to practise in Victoria in 1974 and commenced to practise as a solicitor on his own account in Hawthorn in 1975 until signing the Roll of Counsel in He was admitted to practise as a barrister in New South Wales in 1987 and appointed as a Queens Counsel in Victoria in He practises in family law and domestic relationships matters in the Family Law Courts and in the Supreme Courts of the States and Territories. He frequently presents papers at seminars and conferences and has written on issues relating to family law in professional journals. Martin was the chairman of the Family Law Section of the Law Institute of Victoria from 1983 to He is a member of the Editorial Board of the Australian Journal of Family Law. He was a member of the executive of the Family Law Section of the Law Council of Australia between 2000 and He was chairman of the Section in Catherine Bint Principal, C M Bint Family Lawyers Since her admission as a solicitor in April 1993, Catherine has garnered impressive experience in the private and public sectors, in alternative dispute resolution and in her work representing parties and children in both family law and child protection matters. In a previous role with Legal Aid, for many years Catherine was part of the very busy Independent Children s Lawyer team managing files and representing many hundreds children. Catherine was a Registrar of the Family Court and Federal Magistrates Court as it then was, from 2006 to Whilst chairing conciliation conferences, Catherine s experience and mediation skills saw her achieving a high percentage of successful resolutions for clients. After returning to private practice in 2009 at HopgoodGanim as Special Counsel, Catherine again took on responsibility for managing both large property matters and parenting matters. Catherine is now Principal of C M Bint Family Lawyers, Brisbane, in which she specialises in ICL work, for which she is highly regarded as a skilled and empathetic practitioner. Dr Jacoba Brasch Dr Jacoba Brasch was admitted to the Bar in 2000 after having spent the preceding 10 years in law-related government jobs, including Press Secretary to an Attorney-General. In 2000, Jacoba completed a Master of Laws at New York University as a Fulbright Scholar and New York University Graduate Merit Scholar. In 2010, Jacoba graduated with a PhD from the University of New South Wales where her doctoral thesis concerned what constitutes a fair, independent and impartial trial, using Australian courts martial as her subject matter. Jacoba also holds a Bachelor of Arts, Masters in Public Administration (UQ) and a Bachelor of Laws (Hons) (QUT). Jacoba practises in family law, mental health law, and customs and excise. 4 Callum Campbell Chief Executive Officer, Australian Mediation Association As CEO of the Australian Mediation Association (AMA), Callum has been involved in the establishment of the Australian National Mediator Standards. Callum is a practising mediator in Australia and PNG, adjudicator and family dispute resolution practitioner. He recently conducted a training and accreditation program for the Solomon Islands and PNG Judiciaries and has been a pioneer in the establishment of online dispute resolution and family dispute resolution in Australia. Callum mediates in all areas of the commercial legal arena, the workplace sector and family law disputes as well as the resource sector and community consultations. Callum has worked extensively in the family law mediation environment area having been associated with Family Relationship Centres, Legal Aid, Relationships Australia and online telephone dispute resolution, in addition to his private practice. Judge Margaret Cassidy Federal Circuit Court of Australia Judge Cassidy received her commission to the Federal Magistrates Court of Australia on 5 November The Court became the Federal Circuit Court in Her Honour mainly sits in family law matters. Prior to commencing her career in law, Judge Cassidy completed her Bachelor of Applied Science from the Queensland University of Technology in In 1993, her Honour completed a Bachelor of Laws with Honours from the Queensland University of Technology. Judge Cassidy was admitted to practise as a barrister in the Supreme Court in 1994 and the High Court of Australia in Her Honour was appointed as a Magistrate in the Queensland Magistrates Court in Judge Anne Demack Federal Circuit Court of Australia Judge Anne Demack was appointed as a Federal Magistrate in The Court became the Federal Circuit Court in Anne was formerly a barrister in private practice in Rockhampton. She holds degrees in law and in social work and had earlier worked as a social worker. At the time of her appointment she was a member of the Children Services Tribunal, which was then the Queensland Tribunal with responsibility for reviewing decisions made by the statutory child protection department, and had been a member of the Central Queensland parole board. Anne has a particular interest in parenting matters, child protection issues and parents being assisted with the resolution of their disputes. Catherine Gale Director, Resolve Conflict Lawyers and Mediators Catherine Gale is a Director of Resolve Conflict, Lawyers and Mediators, a boutique Melbourne law firm specialising in providing family law clients with solutions without court. Catherine is a collaborative family lawyer, accredited mediator and accredited family dispute resolution practitioner. She is the author of Divorce an Australian Women s Guide and co-author of Divorce an Australian Men s Guide, and currently lectures at Monash University in collaborative practice. She has lectured in professional development at the Leo Cussen Institute and more recently with the Law Institute of Victoria, Queensland Law Society and South Australian Law Society in their continuing professional development programs. Catherine is a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors and sits on a number of boards including the Australian Centre for Court and Justice System Innovation and the International Academy of Collaborative Professionals. In 2006, Catherine was the fourth female President of the Law Institute of Victoria and in 2012 the third female President of the Law Council of Australia. Dr Scott Harden Psychiatrist Dr Scott Harden is a child, adolescent and adult forensic psychiatrist. He divides his time between the Child and Youth Forensic Outreach Service as Senior Visiting Psychiatrist, his private practice with particular interests in ADHD and anxiety, and his private medico-legal practice in the family, civil and criminal court jurisdictions. He is the Treasurer of the Queensland Branch of the Australian and New Zealand Association of Psychiatry, Psychology and the Law. He is a General Councillor of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists. Tedd Jordan Tedd was called to the bar in July His major areas of practise are alternative dispute resolution (arbitration/mediation/ evaluation), appellate and family law. Tedd holds a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Laws (Adv) (Qld). Judge Kevin Lapthorn Federal Circuit Court of Australia His Honour Judge Lapthorn was appointed to the bench in August 2005, sitting originally in the Newcastle Registry of the court before transferring to the Brisbane Registry in Prior to his appointment His Honour had practised as a barrister since 1989 in both Brisbane and Sydney primarily in family and child welfare law. His Honour was appointed to the Family Law Council in QLS and FLPA Family Law Residential

5 Neil McGregor Neil was admitted as a barrister and solicitor in New Zealand in February 1974 and as a solicitor in Queensland in 1980 and practised in areas of criminal law, general civil litigation and family law. In May 1984, Neil was admitted as barrister in Queensland. He later qualified as a mediator and is recognised as a mediator by the Bar Association. Neil s initial areas of practice included general commercial litigation, personal injuries and some criminal law, but his principal area of practice for approximately the past 25 years is family law and related areas such as de facto property disputes. Neil has been a contributor to a number of publications such as Butterworth s Court Forms & Pleadings Queensland and was a reporter for the Queensland Reports. He has wide general experience both as a solicitor and as a barrister but has specialised as a barrister in family law for in excess of 25 years. Tim North SC Tim North SC came to the bar in 1983 and was appointed silk in Tim s major areas of practice include banking, commercial, contract, equity and family law. Graeme Page SC Graeme has been a barrister at the Queensland Bar since November 1975 and was appointed silk in November Graeme has specialised in relationship law since 1975 with emphasis on property and appellate issues, and continues to act as advocate for Independent Children s Lawyers and for Legal Aid. Graeme is a family law mediator and arbitrator, Fellow of the International Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers and lecturer in family law at Bar Practice Centre Queensland. Graeme is also a former contributor to CCH Family Law Service and Butterworth s Family Law Service and served on committee of Family Law Section Law Council of Australia between 1984 and1990. Graeme has been an examiner for Family Law Specialist Accreditation, member Domestic Violence Council Queensland, President Family Law Practitioner s Association Queensland and Chair of the Family Law Committee Bar Association. Vincent Papaleo Clinical Psychologist Vincent Papaleo is a clinical psychologist who specialises in the provision of psychological services in the area of family law. He is a member of the Australian Psychological Society and a member of the Board of Clinical Psychologists. He comes to the area of family law from a clinical background having worked for eight years in the Department of Child Psychiatry at the Austin Hospital in Melbourne before moving in to private practice. He has completed many family reports, continuously gives evidence before the Family and Federal Courts, and regularly presents to family law conferences, family law firms, and family lawyers through the Law Institute of Victoria and the Leo Cussen Institute, and contributes to the training of Independent Children s Lawyers and other psychologists. Vincent s clinical interests include alternative dispute resolution methods for families in high conflict and providing child development perspectives in relation to family law disputes. He has a particular interest in pre-school populations both from a clinical and family law perspective and still maintains a clinical practice dealing with child behaviour problems. Martine Powell Professor of Forensic Psychology, Deakin University Professor Powell has nearly 20 years experience as researcher in child witness testimony and investigative interviewing. Her early career training was in child development, human memory and human learning processes. She currently has over 150 publications addressing four themes: analyses of child memory and language and the effectiveness of various interview techniques; development of strategies to promote transfer of learning from investigative interviewer training programs to the field; evaluations of criminal justice reforms related to child abuse investigation and methods of minimising the mental health impact of working in the area of child exploitation. Professor Powell s knowledge is both scientific and experiential in nature. Her research is best described as practicebased; conducted in collaboration with industry partners to inform decisions about how to improve investigative and evidential interviewing. Her experiential knowledge, in contrast, derives from her prior employment as a schoolteacher, child abuse therapist and as a long-term trainer of investigative and evidential interviewers. Alison Ross Special Counsel, HopgoodGanim Lawyers; Chair, Family Law Committee, Queensland Law Society and Accredited Specialist Family Law Alison Ross is a Special Counsel in HopgoodGanim s family law practice and has worked exclusively in family law since Alison specialises in complex property matters and other financial matters arising from relationship breakdowns and has extensive experience in both matrimonial and de facto relationship law. She is also experienced in dealing with international family law matters including international financial matters and issues relating to children. Alison is Chair of the Queensland Law Society s Family Law Committee, and a member of the Family Law Practitioners Association, the College of Law (Queensland) Course Advisory Committee and a member Collaborative Law. 6 Dr Mark Sayers Dr Mark Sayers commenced in private practice at the bar in 1998 after having been associate to McPherson JA in the Supreme Court Court of Appeal. Prior to serving as associate, Mark had both lectured in philosophy as well as law and had worked in clinical pastoral counselling. Mark has practiced almost exclusively in family law and succession law. In 2008, Mark started sitting as a legal member on the Mental Health Review Tribunal. In 2011, Mark was appointed chair of the Catholic Education Council in Brisbane. Stafford Shepherd Senior Ethics Solicitor, Queensland Law Society Stafford Shepherd was admitted as a solicitor in 1987 after graduating from the University with a Bachelor of Laws and completion of his articles. Between 1993 and 2003 he practiced in partnership and subsequently as a sole practitioner in Sandgate. In October 2003 Stafford sold his practice. In December 2005 he graduated from the University with a Master of Laws (Commercial and Corporate). He holds a Certificate in Arbitration and Mediation from the University of Adelaide and is a Graded Arbitrator. In 2008, Stafford joined Queensland Law Society as an Ethics Guidance Solicitor and was later promoted to Senior Ethics Solicitor. In this position he provides guidance to solicitors on ethical issues. Stafford s areas of interest are conveyancing, leasing, wills and estate administration, and equitable doctrines. Peter Szabo Partner, M+K Lawyers and Accredited Specialist Family Law Peter is an acknowledged leader among family lawyers. His main focus is on the interaction between family law, asset protection and succession planning. This area of law is expanding rapidly, given the number of blended families and aging Australia. He is an Accredited Specialist in Family Law, a Fellow of the International Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers as well as a trained mediator and collaborative lawyer. Peter has authored several family law publications, including The Family Court Practice Manual (since 1985), published by the Leo Cussen Institute of Victoria and now in its fifth edition; The On Line Edition of the Practice Manual, Family Law Financial Settlements, Tax Issues in Family Law the difference between Hacking and Carving, and The Family Breakdown chapter in the CCH Master Financial Planning Guide. Trent Waller Partner, Carne Reidy Herd Lawyers; Accredited Specialist Family Law and President, Family Law Practitioners Association Trent Waller is an Accredited Specialist in Family Law and the family law partner at Carne Reidy Herd Lawyers, Brisbane. Trent s practice focus is on resolving financial and property settlement disputes and asset protection by way of financial and relationship agreements. Trent is a board member of the Family Law Practitioners Association and member of the Family Law Section, Law Council of Australia. Trent has presented papers for Queensland Legal Aid, Queensland Law Society, LexisNexis and TEN in various aspects of family law and related areas. Sydney Williams Sydney Williams was admitted to practice in Queensland in He is a member of the Council of the Bar Association of Queensland. He practices predominantly in the area of family law, but also practices in the common law, commercial litigation, insurance (including professional and medical negligence) fields. He has appeared in the appellate divisions of the High Court, Family Court, and the Supreme Court. Geoff Wilson Partner, HopgoodGanim and Accredited Specialist Family Law Geoff co-manages HopgoodGanim s family law practice, one of the largest in Australia. He is a Queensland Law Society Accredited Specialist in Family Law and has practiced in family law for over 25 years. Located 12 minutes from Surfers Paradise and approximately 45 minutes from Brisbane, the resort features a full complement of health and fitness facilities, day spa, and 27-hole championship golf course.
