1 The Manuscript: Every candidate for the Bachelor s degree with honors must present hard copy of their thesis, one to their Thesis Advisor and one to the East Asian Studies Department (333 Brook Street, room 101). Title Page: The title page should contain the title, the name of the author, the degree to be awarded at Brown, the date the degree will be conferred, copyright notice (see below), and name and signature of the author. Note that the student owns the copyright on the thesis produced for an undergraduate degree. The last item before the date should read as follows: Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Arts in the Department of East Asian Studies Acknowledgments: Each thesis may contain a short biography of the candidate, including institutions attended and dates of attendance, degrees and honors, titles of publications, teaching and professional experience, and other matters that may be pertinent. This space may also be used to give acknowledgement to those who have helped in the preparation or process of the thesis. This section may be single-spaced. Table of Contents: A succinct list of all chapters and/or subsections within the thesis should be provided. This will prepare the reader for the organizational scheme of your thesis. The Text: Every effort should be made to have the manuscript as perfect as possible in form and appearance. Pages containing handwritten corrections, typewritten strikeovers and unsightly erasures, misspellings, and the like will not be accepted. Typing or printing may single- or double-sided, but be consistent. Good references for editorial details are the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers, Theses, and Dissertations (Modern Language Association) and The Chicago Manual of Style (University of Chicago Press). Paper: The original manuscript should be printed on white paper of good quality, 8.5 x 11 inches. Twentypound paper, used for photocopy machines, is a good minimum standard. Type and Spacing Standard: Typefaces set to print at 10-, 11-, or 12-point font are acceptable. Typing or printing should be double-spaced, except for footnotes (single-space footnotes, with double spacing to separate one note from the next). Black ink should be used to ensure typing or printing of uniform blackness and legibility. If using a laser printer, it should have a resolution of at least 300 dots per inch. Non-printable characters or symbols should be inserted in black indelible ink. Margins: The following margins should be observed: the margin on the left (the binding side) should be 1.5 inches wide. The top, bottom and right-hand margins should be 1 inch wide. Page Numbers: Most theses consist of preliminary pages which are numbered using Roman numerals, and the thesis proper which is numbered using Arabic numerals. Be consistent. Either put all page numbers (both Roman and Arabic) at the top of the page, or put all page numbers (both Roman and Arabic) at the bottom of the page. Page numbers may be placed closer to the edge of the paper than the text itself. The preliminary pages must appear in the following order: Title page (do not number) Preface and acknowledgments ii Table of contents iii List of tables iv List of illustrations v Should any element of the preliminary pages be longer than one page, number the pages consecutively. The preliminary pages should appear in this order but not necessarily with the page numbers shown above.

The numbering begins with 1 and runs consecutively to the end. Romanization: The following standards are encouraged but not required. If tables and figures are embedded, captions should appear directly below the figure or table. If collected at the end, captions should precede the figure or table. Captions should completely and accurately explain the content of the image in a few sentences. Charts, tables, figures and graphs should be capable of being photocopied clearly, and should not be handlabeled. No material should be taped or glued to pages. Instead use a scanner and a high quality printer to place pictures into your text. Separate lists of figures and tables are necessary and should follow the Table of Contents. Appendices: The same paper size, pagination, margin, and illustration requirements apply to appendices. They support the research in your thesis and should be as readable and reproducible as the rest of your work. Page limitations: Though there is no minimum or limit, most theses range between 30 and 40 pages for all material. Supplementary Media: You may submit CD-ROMs, DVDs, etc., with your thesis, but the written portion must make sense by itself. The Department welcomes submission of theses and presentations as.pdf files so that they may post your good work as examples for future students.

5 Dating the Thesis: Because degrees are conferred only at the end of the academic year, the title page of theses completed during the summer or during any month of an academic year must be dated the following May. For example, if you complete your thesis in August of 2010, the date on your submission should be May Copyright: The author of a thesis for an undergraduate degree maintains the copyright to the material. In this case you should place the appropriate copyright notice on the thesis. Copyright notice consists of four elements: the symbol "c" with a circle around it and/or the word "copyright," the year of publication, the name of the copyright owner, and the words "All rights reserved." These four elements should appear together on the title page. Example: % 2011 Jane Doe. All rights reserved. When copyright ownership is held by the student, the student must, as condition of a degree award, grant royalty-free permission to Brown to reproduce and publicly distribute copies of the thesis, and must place the following legend on the thesis title page: The author hereby grants to Brown University permission to reproduce and to distribute publicly paper and electronic copies of this thesis document in whole or in part. Presenting the Final Copy When the thesis is presented to the East Asian Studies Department, it must be in final form. It may not be revised in any way after it is presented. Please check the pages of each copy of the thesis to make sure that all of the pages are in order, that all are numbered, and that none are missing.
