1 WINONA STATE UNIVERSITY REQUIRED CHECKLIST FOR ALL CURRICULAR PROPOSALS Course or Program FILM 399: Internship This checklist enables A2C2 representatives to endorse that their departments have accurately followed the Process for Accomplishing Curricular Change. For each course or program proposal submitted to A2C2, this checklist must be completed, signed by the submitting department's A2C2 representative, and included with the proposal when forwarded for approval. Peer review of proposals is also strongly advised, e.g., departments should discuss and vote on the proposals as submitted to A2C2, rather than on just the ideas proposed or drafts of proposals. If a proposal fails to follow or complete any aspect of the process, the Course and Program Proposal Subcommittee will postpone consideration of the proposal and return it to the department's A2C2 representative for completion and resubmission. Resubmitted proposals have the same status as newly submitted proposals. Note: This form need not be completed for notifications. 1. 3 A. Course Description 1. Catalog description. FILM 399, Internship. Supervised, practical experience in film research, analysis, criticism, production, distribution, promotion, or exhibition. Must be arranged well in advance of the registration period. A student may apply no more than 6 s.h. of internship credits towards the Film Studies minor. P/NC. Requires instructor s permission. (1-12 s.h.) 2. Course outline of the major topics and subtopics (minimum of two-level outline). Note: FILM 399 will offer supervised, practical experience in film research, analysis, criticism, production, distribution, promotion, or exhibition as determined by the needs of the individual student, and thus its content will vary with each individual iteration of the course. As such, this description and outline for a typical 3-s.h. internship has been provided as an example. An internship like the one described might be completed locally under supervision at a local periodical or film review blogsite or with Frozen River Film Festival; other likely sites for internship opportunities are discussed in section B.2 below. Internships may be approved for credit up to 12 semester hours in circumstances where the student s experience will be equivalent to full-time (32 or more hours per week); however, most internships are likely to be awarded three or four credit hours for more narrowly delimited projects undertaken during a student s regular course of study. FILM 399, Internship: Film Reviewing (3 s.h.) In this internship, the student will gain supervised, practical experience in the markets, strategies, applications, and etiquette of film reviewing. The student will examine potential markets, review salient elements of film history and technique, draft and revise reviews for target audiences, and publish (or seek publication of) selected film reviews. Learning outcomes, their assessment, and course requirements follow below. 1. Markets and Contexts a. The Market for Film Criticism b. Understanding Film History c. Understanding Filmmaking 2. Reviewing Techniques a. Writing the Review b. Putting the Pieces Together c. Advanced Reviewing Concepts and Techniques d. Grading and Star Ratings 3. Career Opportunities a. 4 4. Course requirements (papers, lab work, projects, etc.) and means of evaluation. Hours. The intern will work a minimum of 8 hours per week per semester on the internship project to earn three semester hours credit. The intern will keep a weekly log of activity to be submitted. Outcomes and Requirements. The intern will articulate 4-5 specific learning outcomes for the internship, subject to comment and approval by the supervisor and faculty member. Learning outcomes are to be listed on the internship proposal and accompanied by the requirements which will demonstrate evidence of their accomplishment. Final Paper. This 1000-word essay is due the last scheduled day of classes of the semester in which the internship is completed. Some questions to consider: What did you do? What did you learn? What activities and experiences were the most interesting or educational? Did you meet your learning objectives? Did you learn any new technical or professional skills? What experiences were most valuable or fulfilling? Which aspects were challenging? Has this internship affected how you think about your future goals? 5. Course materials (textbook(s), articles, etc.). The following texts are recommended for the internship in film reviewing as described above. For other internship opportunities and experiences, other texts, such as those named in the reference list below, would be substituted. Null, Christopher. Five Stars! How to Become a Film Critic, The World's Greatest Job. San Francisco: Sutro, Print. Lopate, Philip, ed. American Movie Critics: From Silents until Now. New York: Library of America, Print. 6. Assessment of Outcomes All interns are expected to apply concepts, knowledge, and skills developed through their coursework to the specific tasks of the particular internship, and in all instances, interns will keep logs of their activities and submit a final paper articulating their accomplishment of objectives. However, specific student learning outcomes will necessarily vary from intern to intern, task to task, site to site. Therefore, each proposed internship will require that student learning outcomes will be articulated in advance, with specific requirements listed documenting evidence of each outcome. For example, for the internship in film reviewing described above, student learning will be assessed through performance on the course requirements as listed: Through the course of reading, research, writing, and resource development, the intern will Outcome: Articulate a working statement of aesthetic philosophy for film reviewing. o Requirement: 1000-word paper based on examination of published reviews and reviewers. Week 3. Outcome: Analyze purpose, audience, and media outlets for film reviewing. o Requirement: 1000-word paper analyzing history, development, structure, and audience of specific film review publications (print or online). Week 5. Outcome: Develop a portfolio of film reviews for publication. o Requirement(s): Compose at least six full-length feature film reviews targeted for specific audiences and outlets. Weeks Outcome: Submit reviews for publication. o Requirement: Using WordPress or similar software, develop a functional template for a film review blog, incorporating full reviews, a comment feature, hyperlinks, and navigation elements. Or, alternatively, Join an existing film review community such as filmcritic.com or moviereview.com and publish reviews there. Week 15. o Requirement: Solicit and evaluate professional and nonprofessional feedback and critique. Week List of references. Alff, D. Film School & Beyond. CineCycle Publishing, Print.

Rationale 1. Statement of the major focus and objectives of the course. FILM 399, Internship, follows the parameters outlined in the WSU Undergraduate Catalog: Internships provide students academic credit for a supervised on-the-job work experience. Students apply the knowledge and skills learned in an academic setting to a professional work environment. A number of departments offer specific courses granting internship credits. Students must be fully matriculated to enroll in an internship. WSU policy indicates that students must have a minimum GPA or 2.00 to enroll in an internship; however, some departments require a higher minimum GPA. University policy limits the number of credits that may apply toward a degree as follows: 12 internship credits per semester and 16 internship credits in total. In cases where combined internship credits in a major and/or minor will exceed 16 credits, a maximum of 21 semester credits may be applied toward graduation. However, individual departments may set a maximum number of credits awarded for internships. FILM 399, Internship, will provide interested students the opportunity to earn academic credit for a range of activities related to film studies. Internships provide invaluable experience, introducing students to career possibilities and providing practical, supervised experience in a range of endeavors, ranging from research, analysis, and criticism to production, distribution, promotion, or exhibition. Internships can help students determine what avenues or pursuits they might wish to follow after graduation. Internships can introduce the students to sites and institutions where they might later find employment. Also, internships enhance students résumés; they can provide a source of references for a prospective employer and they often represent students in a positive way. An internship and a positive reference provide substantiated evidence of real-world experience connecting academic preparation to skill development. While the specific tasks and sites of an approved internship can and do vary greatly, in each instance the focus will be on the application of academic skill and knowledge to a real-world application. 2. Specify how this new course contributes to the departmental curriculum. The Department of English regularly offers a small number of courses in film studies under the FILM designation and is collaborating with other departments on the development of an interdisciplinary minor in Film Studies. The approval of FILM 399, Internship, will allow individual students interested in film studies to earn academic credit for any of a number of practical, experiential activities without requiring additional costs in materials or faculty load. FILM 399, Internship, provides academic credit for students who arrange, in consultation with a faculty member, a substantial project or assignment related to film studies. These experiences are likely to range considerably, from research internships with faculty, reviewing and publishing internships with media publications, to work on and support of festival and film series offerings. In recent years, Winona has been host to an increasing number of film series, festivals, resources, and other offerings, making local opportunities for internships increasingly possible. Other internships are
6 advertised nationally with larger firms and foundations. Not all practical experiences merit academic credit at the upper-division level. To seek approval for a proposed internship, the student proposes a project to the faculty member, providing that the student and faculty member can agree that the project is meritorious of upper-division credit, that it is not unnecessarily duplicative of existing offerings, and that the student and faculty member share sufficient interest in the topic to approve the internship. It is expected that any internship proposed for FILM 399 will, as is the case in lower-division film studies courses, continue to develop students knowledge of, and/or abilities with, the formal aspects of film that constitute the language of the medium (i.e., narrative, cinematography, mise-en-scene, editing, sound), and that the internship will enhance the student s understanding of cinema beyond the levels taught in lower-division courses. Approved topics for internships will range from, but not necessarily be limited to, research into specific aspects of film studies; writing projects (review, criticism, etc.); resource development; pedagogical projects; work related to the production or distribution of film; and/or work on the promotion or exhibition of film in civic, academic, or artistic venues, such as film clubs, film series, or film festivals. Any approved internship, however, will require substantial handson experience, documented evidence of the student s effort, and the cooperation of a workplace supervisor. As is the case with internships offered by other departments, FILM 399 will not replicate the content of any existing course but instead provide the individual student with the opportunity for advanced practice. Therefore, FILM 399 will contribute significantly to the depth and range of allowable offerings in film studies. 3. Indicate any course(s) which may be dropped if this course is approved. No course will be dropped due to the approval of this course. FILM 399 is not a regularly scheduled course, but one offered only at the discretion of the faculty member as an internship. 4. Indicate any course(s) which may be dropped if this course is approved. No course will be dropped due to the approval of this course. C. Impact of this Course on other Departments, Programs, Majors, or Minors 1. Does this course increase or decrease the total credits required by a major or minor of any other department? If so, which department(s)? It does not impact any minor or major offered by any other department. 2. Attach letter(s) of understanding from impacted department(s). Not applicable.
