CIP Course covers computer terminology, hardware, software, operating systems, and information systems relating to the business environment. The main focus of this course is on business applications of software, including word processing, spreadsheets, databases, presentation graphics, and business oriented utilization of the Internet. 2 STUDENT EVALUATION BRAZOSPORT COLLEGE SYLLABUS BCIS 1405: BUSINESS COMPUTER APPLICATIONS COURSE EVALUATION A. Tests/Quizzes will account for no more than 35% of the total grade. Quizzes may include Computer Concepts, Windows, Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint and other textbook material. B. Online SAM (Skills Assessment Manager) Assignments using Microsoft Windows, Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint will account for no more than 20% of the total grade. C. Research and other assignments will account for no more than 15% of the total grade. D. Student Project and Presentation will account for no more than 10% of the total grade. E. Final exam will account for no more than 20% of the total grade. INSTRUCTOR EVALUATION A. Students will be given an opportunity to evaluate their instructor and the course content. B. The instructor will review and evaluate in terms of withdrawal rate. C. Final grades given will be reviewed in an effort to determine if a pattern of high or low grades exists. 3 BRAZOSPORT COLLEGE SYLLABUS BCIS 1405: BUSINESS COMPUTER APPLICATIONS GENERAL GOALS/OBJECTIVES COURSE CONTENT Students will focus on current computer terminology and business application software, including word processing, spreadsheets, databases, presentation graphics, and business-oriented utilization of the internet. SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES The following list of course goals/objectives will be: 1. To provide students with a concise introduction to computers. 2. To present the most up-to-date technology in an ever-changing discipline. 3. To teach the fundamentals of computers and computer nomenclature, particularly with respect to personal computers, software, and the Web. 4. To present strategies for purchasing a desktop computer, notebook computer, smart phone, portable media player, and digital camera. 5. To offer an introduction to the following: Windows, Internet Explorer, Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, and multiple search engines. 6. To expose students to practical examples of the computer as a useful tool when using Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint. 7. To acquaint students with the proper procedures to use a computer; interact with the Web/Internet; and create documents, worksheets, databases, and presentations for coursework, professional purposes, and personal use. 8. To help students understand the various input/output devices available. 9. To help students understand the various types of user interfaces from commanddriven interfaces to graphical user interfaces. 10. To teach students how to use a search engine, a database, and the library to do research for articles related to their assigned research topic.

The main focus of this course is on business application software, including word processing, spreadsheets, databases, presentation graphics, and business oriented utilization of the internet. This will ensure you receive the correct book and software. Required Materials: BCIS 1405 Bundle. Includes: Computer Concepts and Microsoft Office 2013 by Parsons, Oja, Beskeen, Cram, Duffy, Friedrichsen, and Reding. SAM Trial Subscription for Office 365. Custom Edition for Brazosport College. Students are encouraged to use the training and reviews to assist them on their tests/quizzes and also to complete the 4 SAM on-line projects in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access. ATTENDANCE AND WITHDRAWAL POLICIES The class meets for 3 lecture hours and 2 lab hours per week. Each student will spend at least 6 hours per week preparing for class. 6 COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND GRADING POLICY Your performance objectives will be met by quizzes/tests, project assignments, research, a student project and presentation. Each quiz or test, research element, and project assignment will be graded and your final grade will be determined as a weighted average of these grades as follows: CLASS WORK Tests/Quizzes: 35% Research & Other Assignments: 15% SAM On-line Assignments: 20% Student Project & Presentation: 10% Final Exam: 20% Total 100% Your tests/quizzes, research, SAM on-line assignments, other assignments, student project and presentation each have specific due dates. Your work must be submitted by that date. You are encouraged to work ahead and not wait until that day to start your work. Since all of these have due dates and are available to you from the first day of class no late work will be accepted unless you have a justified excuse. Looking ahead and planning your work along with your other commitments you may have is critical in this class. Do NOT start your work the day it is due. MAKE-UP POLICY Examinations will be announced and appear in the students Weekly Schedule. No make-up exams will be allowed. Students who miss an exam will take a comprehensive final exam that will count as the missed exam and for their final exam. A second missed exam results in a grade of zero for that exam. STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES Each student will be requested to provide a written evaluation of the course at the termination of the semester. Students are also expected to take care of the equipment in the classroom. PLEASE DO NOT BRING FOOD, DRINKS, OR UNAUTHORIZED PERSONS INTO THE CLASSROOM. 7 SCANS COMPETENCIES The Secretary's Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills (SCANS) identified competencies in the area of Resources, Interpersonal, Information, Systems, and Technology; and foundation skills in the areas of Basic Skills, Thinking Skills, and Personal Qualities. This course is part of a program in which each of these competencies and skills are integrated. For application of specific SCANS competencies and skills in this course, see Addendum A. ACADEMIC HONESTY Brazosport College assumes that students eligible to perform on the college level are familiar with the ordinary rules governing proper conduct including academic honesty. The principle of academic honesty is that all work presented by you is yours alone. Academic dishonesty including, but not limited to, cheating, plagiarism, and collusion shall be treated appropriately. Please refer to the Brazosport College Student Guide for more information. In this class, any occurrence of academic dishonesty will be referred to the Dean of Student Services for prompt adjudication, and will, at a maximum for the first offense, result in removal from the course with an F. The Computer Technology & Office Administration Department has determined that the minimum penalty will be to give the student a zero on the assignment and reduce the student s grade by one full letter at the time grades are assigned for the course. A second offense while taking courses at any time in the division will result in a minimum penalty of removal from class (with a grade of F) and a maximum penalty of scholastic suspension from Brazosport College. Sanctions may be imposed beyond your grade in this course by the Dean of Student Services. 13 STUDENT PROJECT Students are being asked to create an imaginary company. The student will define what services/products their company offers, the number of employees, the size of their budget, etc. Once defined, the student will create necessary documents and files for the. The student will conclude their project by creating a PowerPoint presentation and presenting to the class information about their company. You should work on each deliverable as you finish each unit. Do NOT wait until the day before this project is due to complete these deliverables. Specific about each deliverable are provided below. This is YOUR business so be creative and do something to support your business. As long as each deliverable has the attributes you have below are look professional you are good. (1) Word document one page summary or flyer about your business. You need to use the following features of word: graphic, clip art, page border, background color, italics, bold, centering text. (2) Excel workbook to track revenue against expenses. You need to use the following features in excel: three sheets (one for revenue, one for expenses, one for summary), sum function, formatted headers, freeze panes to lock column or rows, some sort of graphic that makes sense for our business (perhaps showing expenses by category or by month), absolute referencing. (3) PowerPoint animations, transitions, new theme, a company logo on every page using the master slide layout and various layouts, title page, and at least 2 graphics in your presentation. ASSIGNMENTS Assignment 1: Syllabus Acknowledgement and Introductions Read the entire course syllabus, especially paying attention to the sections that discuss Due Dates, Tests and Assignments and the Final Exam. You may also want to print the document for your reference throughout the semester. When you have read the document, follow the directions below and send your instructor a memo noting you have completed Assignment 1. Tell me if you have you ever used a computer and how much do you consider yourself a novice, a general user, an advanced user, or a power user. Explain to me if you ever used , have you ever sent an attachment, downloaded an attachment, or forwarded an . Tell me if you have ever used Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint and what versions you have used with each. Also, tell me which operating systems you have used. You may tell me if you own a laptop computer for use at home or the college. Tell me if you have a desktop computer at home that has Microsoft Office and what operating system it uses. Let me know if you have access to the Internet through your laptop or desktop computer or smart phone. Have your ever used the Internet? If so, how much? Have you used the Internet for research or was it limited to your own use/desires? Have you ever used a search engine? Do you have a Facebook account? What about a Twitter account? What about an account? If you have an address tell me what it is? In the body, tell me in your third paragraph three ways I can contact you. Assignment 2: Computer Concepts Unit A Complete the crossword puzzle that is attached at the end of this syllabus. Assignment 3: Software Piracy Refer to page 73 in your textbook, Computer Concepts and Microsoft Office 2013, in the green box titled Expand the Ideas. You are to do answer #1 Do you believe that software piracy is a serious issue? Write 3 or 5 paragraph report supporting your belief. Include the opposing side s arguments. Maximum size is one page! The report must be done in Microsoft Word, be double-spaced with one-inch margins all around. Font size should not be larger than 12 points. Include title for your report and your name in the subtitle. Use 2 different sources in your report. Do not use the textbook as a source. Be sure and save your file to your P: drive or a jump drive so you can check it for plagiarism. I will then need you to upload this file to: turnitin.com. You will then need to check it for plagiarism. If the plagiarism is over 20% you will need to rewrite your ideas and resubmit the paper for a second plagiarism check. If you turn it in with more than 20% plagiarism, you will receive a 0 on this paper and you will drop 1 letter grade for plagiarism (dishonesty). Assignment 4: Research and Windows 8 Follow the instructions in Assignment 4 - Computer Concepts attached. Assignment 5: Managing Files and Folders Using Windows, you will create another folder structure and then sort files, copy files and rename files/folders and use the snipping tool to capture you results. Detail of this assignment can be found in D2L and you will submit your results in D2L Assignment 6: Internet Research Using the Internet, the Brazosport College s Library, or Brazosport College s Academic Search Engine, research one of the topics below. 1) Things you should never post on Facebook or any social media site and why? 2) What are the legal rights employers have concerning work you do on their equipment? 3) What are the different types of malware? 4) You have deleted a potentially embarrassing post from the web are you now safe? 5) Explain the difference between shareware, freeware, demoware and open source software. 6) Explain the difference between bits and bytes and the technical meaning of common prefixes such as kilo, mega, giga, peta and tera. What aspect of a computer system does each measure? Write a one page paper making sure you use Times New Roman font; size 12 font; double spaced; and with 1 top, bottom, left, and right margins. Make sure you two different sources. Be sure and check your spelling and review it for grammatical errors. Any misspelled word is a minus 15 points. After you have this written, I need you to check it for plagiarism using turnitin.com. You cannot use any quoted material; everything must be written in your own words. The plagiarism (similarity) report must show a percentage below 15%. If the similarity report shows a percentage greater than 15%, you will make 40% on the assignment. Include this handout on the top of the assignment you turn it. Be sure and place your name at the top of the assignment. This assignment is due by noon Friday, 10/3/2014. 19 Computers Concepts Assignment #4 This assignment has multiple parts. You must complete all parts to receive full credit. Part I: Information about the computer you will be using for this class. (20%) 1. Using your understanding of Windows 7 or 8, find out the following information about your computer here at the school and document it here.
