2 Cause, Connection, Community A Message from the Board President and CEO Our cause is a simple one: to strengthen the foundations of community and for over 130 years we have done just that. We live our cause by focusing on youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. On any given day we will serve a six week old infant, a child in Youth Sports or School Age Programs, an at-risk teen, a family, and an older adult. Our longevity, tradition, breadth of community service and impact are unparalleled - but we don t do it alone. Our willingness and ability to connect, collaborate and form meaningful partnerships with other community entities has a positive impact on overall quality of life. As we look back over 2015, our 131st year of service, we think it s important to recognize and celebrate our many connections and collaborations. Steve Tammaro YMCA President/CEO Jim Morrison YMCA Corporate Board Chair Through our focus on Youth Development we re committed to nurture the potential of all youth. Our Outside the Box program in partnership with District 81 and North Central High School enables ninth graders to make the potentially difficult transition to high school by increasing attendance rates and improving academic scores. Our collaboration with Gonzaga and Whitworth Universities through our Act Six program provided eight area high school students from ethnically and economically diverse backgrounds the opportunity to attend those universities on four-year, full-tuition scholarships. 1

3 YMCA staff serve on Truancy Boards in the East, West, and Central Valley School Districts, the Mead School District, and the high school boards of District 81. Our staff are instrumental in identifying barriers with school attendance and ways to better support students and their families through connections to community-based services. The Community Cancer Fund is well on its way to establishing a $3 Million endowment to perpetually fund Camp Goodtimes at YMCA Camp Reed, a camp for children affected by cancer. Our focus on Healthy Living commits us to improving the health and well-being of our community. In the past year, we have developed a partnership with CHAS by working with their smoking cessation class participants, offering them financially-assisted memberships with additional plans to bring our YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program to their clients as well. The Guild School, the leading agency in serving developmentally delayed preschoolers, utilizes YMCA swimming pools free of charge to provide aquatic therapy for their young clients. In partnership with Spokane Public Schools, Providence Health Care and the Providence Health Care Foundation, we have introduced the SQORD program to all fifth graders, encouraging activity and play using fun, state-of-the-art technology in addition to providing physical activity intervention at four high-need schools. Social Responsibility is about giving back to and supporting our neighbors. One example is the Youth Investment Program, our long-term collaboration with Spokane County Juvenile Court. Teens gain real-world job skills while working their community-service hours alongside program staff who serve as role models and mentors. Utilizing our grant dollars from the Walmart Foundation and the Summer Food Services Program we provided free meals at our Summer Day Camp sites - not only for our campers in need, but for the community as well. In the summer of 2015 we served 19,225 breakfasts and 20,322 lunches! Cause, Connection, Community the threads of the safety net woven by our causedriven, mission-focused workforce and our many, many partners. 5 REAL CONNECTION I have been involved with the YMCA since 1983 as a volunteer, camp staffer, program director and as a member. The Y has been an important part of my life for years. But 10 years ago, I went through breast cancer, and the Y became my lifeline. The encouragement from the staff, the care of the members, and the welcoming atmosphere were essential to my recovery. During that time, my husband, a disabled veteran, completely lost his ability to work. We were struggling financially and were going to have to give up our Y membership. Thankfully, we learned about the Y s Membership For All program. We were set up with a payment that we could afford comfortably until we were back on our feet. We now give each year to the Annual Campaign so that others may have their lives changed by the Y just as we have. Lauri Clark-Strait, YMCA Member 4

6 CAUSE FOR ENDOWMENT YMCA Endowment Business and individual gifts ensure a bright future for years to come. The YMCA Endowment Fund was established to provide continuity, stability and preservation of our most cherished values. This program allows us to achieve our goals with the assurance that our mission will be experienced by future generations. Planned giving increases the range of opportunities available to donors while continuing to fulfill our worthy mission-driven programs. Endowment development is a process of building funds through various forms of current and planned giving. A priority is placed on drawing only from endowment earnings while leaving the principle intact. Contributions help the YMCA to further secure the growth and potential of our endowment. Heritage Club members make an enduring difference in the well-being of our community. With the help of our professional financial development staff the Y also works to fulfill our members philanthropic goals. 8 REAL CONNECTION Shah Perai Mohammed Osman and her boys needed something more than darkness. They needed something other than the vast wasteland that had become of their home in Afghanistan. They needed hope, and after arriving to the United States with next to nothing, with the help of the YMCA, that is exactly what they got. For the last year the family has been diligently using the facilities at the North YMCA, thoroughly enjoying the benefits of their membership. Aziz received a scholarship for lifeguard training where he excelled through sheer determination coupled with a remarkable personality and attitude. Wanting to give back to a place that had given him and his family so much, Aziz asked to volunteer to do anything he could, especially in the pool. When no opportunities were presently available to volunteer, he used his new skills to apply for a position as a lifeguard, a position he is currently using as a means to help out his family financially. Day in and day out, Aziz brightens up those around him with his hard work and a smile that would make any lamp pale in comparison.
