4 1) Executive Overview Key Observations The Forum used the Burning Glass Labor/Insight TM tool to identify opportunities for new associate s degree programs through analyses of job postings in regional Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs) and local counties. The Research Methodology section details geographic and temporal parameters. Relative Viability of Potential Programmatic Opportunities in Areas of Focus 1. Nursing Very high market demand: Job postings for registered nurses account for nearly one-quarter of all job postings in regional MSAs during Regional employers posted more job openings for registered occupations than any other occupation requiring an associate s degree. High associate s degree demand: Over 50 percent of all job postings for registered nurses require an associate s degree. Program Opportunity: Emphasize integration of highly demanded skills (e.g., acute care, advanced cardiac life support) into existing nursing coursework to better serve employer demand. Consider integration of courses that develop highly demanded baseline skills (e.g., communication, planning, leadership). 2. Software Development Very high market demand: The Software Development, Applications occupation is the largest occupation by volume of job postings in 2013 across regional MSAs and local counties. Very low associate s degree demand: Less than one percent of job postings for positions in the Software Development, Applications occupation require an associate s degree. Program Opportunity: Consider development of workforce development programs for specific computer language programs or software skills to help already-employed workers advance their careers. Additional opportunities exist for programs that help technical workers develop baseline skills (e.g., communication, writing). 3. Truck Transportation Moderate market demand: Employers in regional MSAs posted 2,500 job openings for positions in the truck transportation industry in The industry saw the largest growth in regional MSAs from the first half of 2010 to the first half of 2013 of all local industries. Very low associate s degree demand: Most job postings for positions in the truck transportation industry do not specify any educational requirement. Program Opportunity: Consider a workforce development program to assist displaced workers earn their commercial driver s license to take advantage of the high-growth industry. 4. Retail and Sales Management Very high market demand: Employers posted over 70,000 job openings for positions in occupations related to retail and sales in Low associate s degree demand: Approximately six percent of job postings in select retail and sales occupations require an associate s degree. As hospitals increasingly assemble multidisciplinary teams and seek to become less reliant on physicians for all patient care, institutions may meet workforce needs by offering training to registered nurses to operate at top-of-license in specialty fields. 18 6) Research Methodology Methodology The Forum used the Burning Glass Labor/Insight TM tool to identify employer demand, desired education levels, top skills, top titles, and top industries across the labor market within Gavilan College s identified service area, which represent potential areas for programmatic investment. This report includes data from online job postings in the United States in 2010, 2011, 2012, and H1 represents data from January through June of each calendar year, and H2 represents data from July through December. The Forum identified job postings in the following Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs), referred to in aggregate as Regional MSAs throughout this report: San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara, CA MSA Santa Cruz-Watsonville, CA MSA San Francisco-Oakland-Fremont, CA MSA The Forum also analyzed local job postings in the San Benito and Santa Clara counties.
