2010 Annual Report

Letter from the President and Chair Thanks to the support of our members, 2010 was a year of amazing growth for The Coalition for Buzzards Bay. When we look back, we can hardly believe how our work is creating a new, healthier future for our Bay, our drinking water and our watershed lands. And all of this is happening because of you our members. Your financial support and investment in our success makes all the difference. This Annual Report provides just a snapshot of what you have made possible in On the following pages, you ll read about how we: n Completed the green renovation of the historic 1832 Coggeshall Counting House on the New Bedford waterfront and opened the new Buzzards Bay Center our first permanent home. This major milestone in the Coalition s life sets us on firm ground for financial stability and future growth. n Elevated Education and Public Engagement of people of all ages to a top priority to both build generations of future environmental stewards and educate today s decision-makers on how better to protect the Bay. New staff, educational exhibits in New Bedford and Woods Hole, expanded outreach to businesses, local government officials, and youth are all underway. n Filed major federal litigation in partnership with the Conservation Law Foundation to force the US EPA to clean up the septicsystem nitrogen pollution that is suffocating our bays and coves. Septic systems are the Bay s largest nitrogen source, and we will not succeed in restoring water quality without addressing them. Expect much more on this issue in the coming year. n Maintained our vigilance in court to protect the Massachusetts Oil Spill Prevention Act (specifically the rules that require Bay oil barges to have a second Escort Tug and local pilot to prevent accidents) from federal attack. n Saved more than 1,000 acres of critical watershed lands from development. We focused on the Mattapoisett River Valley s drinking water supplies and protecting the Bay s freshwater rivers and streams. This work ensures that the most important watershed lands are saved forever. n And we boosted our membership to over 8,000 members a doubling in three years expanding our broad movement in support of a clean and healthy environment in the Bay watershed from Westport to Woods Hole. Our work has never been more in demand. Despite serious, welldocumented declines in the Bay s health, inadequate pollution control and local land use laws continue to cause damage. Each day, we call for more action, educate decision-makers, proactively protect land and cleanup sources of pollution. Like turning a massive ship drifting off course, we are slowly and steadily working to create a different future for Buzzards Bay and its watershed lands. It is our pleasure, then, to present the challenges and victories highlighted in this Annual Report. We hope you are proud of what we are accomplishing together and that you ll encourage your friends and family to join us. Thank you! 3 Education and Public Engagement In 2010, the Coalition renewed its commitment to informing, inspiring, and motivating people to stewardship and action on behalf of Buzzards Bay. Through our new Education & Public Engagement programs we seek to create both an informed public today and future generations who will understand the Buzzards Bay ecosystem (how it works, how it is threatened, and their place in it) and support its restoration and protection. A New Initiative: Education and Public Engagement The problems facing Buzzards Bay will take decades to reverse. We need to not only take bold action to influence decision-makers today, but also to engage younger people and instill a connection with the Bay and a strong stewardship ethic. With the creation of our Education and Public Engagement Department, the Coalition launched a multi-faceted approach to educate and reach out to youth, decision makers, and the public at large. We started in July with the hiring of The Coalition s first ever Vice President of Education and Public Engagement, Rob Hancock. Rob brings a decade of experience in marine and environmental education, both on land and at sea. He holds a Masters in Environmental Science and Management from the University of Rhode Island and a BA in Geology from Brown University. Rob oversees all aspects of The Coalition s efforts to educate and engage the community in the protection of Buzzards Bay. Outreach Centers Opened The Coalition s work to engage the public at large starts with person-to-person outreach through learning centers in New Bedford and Woods Hole. These centers, with interactive exhibits and informational displays provide visitors with a clear appreciation of the Bay s importance and fragility. The Richard C. Wheeler Bay Learning Center in New Bedford opened to the public in late August and has hosted hundreds of visitors since then. Our Woods Hole Outreach Center is undergoing an expansion and redesign to create an interactive, family-oriented seasonal learning center in the heart of Woods Hole, opening in May Education To engage individuals who regularly make decisions in their professional or community life that influence Buzzards Bay and the watershed, The Coalition has launched an annual series of decision-maker workshops that provide practical, bay-friendly alternatives to unique and fragile nature of the Bay watershed and the challenges it faces today. business as usual. These workshops bring experts and innovators together with practitioners in areas such as wastewater, land development, home construction, maritime industries, agriculture, and more. The interactive exhibits in the Richard C. Wheeler Bay Learning Center focus on the With an eye to the future, The Coalition commenced planning field-based Bay and watershed learning programs for youth. The programs will be aimed at creating a sense of pride and shared responsibility towards the Bay and watershed through exploration, experimentation, and action. The Coalition has partnered with the Southcoast YMCA to provide Bay stewardship programming as a part of the Y s Camp Massasoit in Mattapoisett in the summer of 2011 and will expand to other Y Camps in the years to come ANNUAL REPORT 2

New Buzzards Bay Center Opened Built to service the whaling industry, the exterior of the 1832 Coggeshall Counting House was restored to its original beauty as it begins a new life as the Buzzards Bay Center. Photo Peter Vanderwarker August 27, 2010 was a landmark day in the history of The Coalition for Buzzards Bay as we opened the organization s first permanent headquarters: The Buzzards Bay Center in downtown New Bedford. Just steps from the harbor and with views of the Bay, the center provides a solid foundation to support our growing efforts to Save Buzzards Bay. Solid is a great word to describe the building, originally constructed in 1832 as the Coggeshall Counting House. Built to hold barrels of whale oil and shipping supplies for the whaling industry, the building survived a variety of tenants and several fires in the 1930s and was purchased by The Coalition in Following a top to bottom green renovation, the Buzzards Bay Center is a model of how to combine sustainable design with historic preservation. More important is what s happening inside. The building s prime location in the New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park provides a tremendous opportunity for The Coalition to engage the hundreds of thousands of visitors to the city each year. The connection starts in the Richard C. Wheeler Bay Learning Center which contains interactive exhibits and informational displays including a 3D model of the Buzzards Bay watershed. 5 State Representative Antonio Cabral, CBB President Mark Rasmussen and New Bedford Mayor Scott Lang speak at the Grand Opening on August 27. In a room that was once New Bedford s well-known Harborside Bar, coolers in the David Emerson Riggs Laboratory now serve the Coalition s Baywatchers Monitoring Program. is open to the public weekdays from 9am-5pm and also for AHA! Nights, the city s public arts festivals held on the second Thursday of every month, 5-9pm. Sharing the first floor of the Buzzards Bay Center is the David Emerson Riggs Laboratory, home of the Baywatchers volunteer water quality monitoring program, now in its twentieth year. The building s second and third floors contain office space for The Coalition s education, watershed protection and advocacy staff. The fourth floor, with views of Buzzard Bay, contains a public meeting room with state-of-the-art A/V technology, a floor to ceiling map of the watershed and artwork inspired by Buzzards Bay including the sculpture Abundance by John Magnan which contains over 100 fish carved from original building beams recovered during construction. The meeting room supports The Coalition s outreach and education efforts by hosting workshops, lectures, and meetings and it is also available for rental by community groups. Adjacent to the meeting room is the Henry Wheeler Library, a growing resource of all things Buzzards Bay including scientific journals, reports, popular literature, maps, nautical charts, and more. All of this is contained in a highly energy efficient building designed to have minimal environmental impact, both during construction and while in use. By starting with an existing building and reusing materials that would otherwise be sent to the landfill, the development footprint is minimal. And, thanks to a vegetated roof, which creates new green space in the city that stores and filters rainwater, the building returns cleaner water to the watershed. However, perhaps the Center most important asset, which guests will never see, is deep in its walls where thick, dense spray foam insulation minimizes the transfer of heat in and out of the building. This allows the Center to operate with a fraction of the energy of a traditional building and, with roof-mounted solar panels, the Center generates approximately 10% of its own energy. The Buzzards Bay Center s vegetated roof reduces storm water runoff into the harbor; solar panels provide clean electricity to the offices below. Photo John Robson The Center was designed by Richard Renner Architects and built by New Bedford-based Bufftree Construction. Construction management was by W.W. Reich of Falmouth ANNUAL REPORT 4

BAYKEEPER ADVOCACY Strong advocacy on behalf of the Bay and its Watershed stand at the core of The Coalition for Buzzards Bay s efforts to protect and restore the region s environment. In 2010, our Baykeeper advocacy program continued to focus on reducing nitrogen pollution to the Bay s harbors and coves and watchdogging the implementation of strict oil spill prevention rules. Battling Nitrogen Pollution Nitrogen pollution is the greatest threat to the health of Buzzards Bay. More than half of the Bay s harbors and coves are suffering from the poor water clarity, bad odors, and loss of shellfish and other marine organisms associated with excessive nitrogen from inadequate wastewater disposal and poorly-planned development. Addressing the nitrogen pollution crisis is the top advocacy priority of the Coalition. In 2010 we took important steps throughout the watershed to combat this threat. n Over the past year, what started with a small group of concerned citizens in Wareham evolved, with The Coalition s guidance, into a broad community effort to find local solutions to the nitrogen pollution plaguing Wareham s coastal waters. The Wareham Nitrogen Consensus brought together a diverse group of citizens to focus on the two principle sources of nitrogen to Wareham s rivers: wastewater and cranberry bogs. The result was an Action Plan offering comprehensive solutions. Learn more at n To prevent large new nitrogen pollution sources to the Bay, The Coalition appealed the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection s permit for the AD Makepeace Company s proposed 1,100 unit River Run development in Plymouth. The permit allows the company to discharge 395,000 gallons per day of wastewater into the ground adjacent to the Agawam. The Coalition for Buzzards Bay Challenges EPA to Cleanup Wastewater Pollution on Cape Cod In an effort to advance the much-needed and delayed clean-up of our coastal waters, The Coalition for Buzzards Bay and the Conservation Law Foundation (CLF) took legal action in 2010 against the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to hold them accountable for their failure to properly manage nitrogen pollution sources like septic systems, stormwater and wastewater treatment plant discharges on Cape Cod, including Bay watershed towns Bourne and Falmouth. The problem is clear. Eighteen years of our data confirm that nitrogen is suffocating Buzzards Bay harbors and coves, said Mark Rasmussen, President of The Coalition for Buzzards Bay in announcing the litigation. Fixing the nitrogen problem will take time, innovation, and financial assistance for our communities. We can t have EPA on the sidelines any longer. Nitrogen pollution is caused primarily by insufficiently treated wastewater from groundwater discharges like septic systems, stormwater systems, and wastewater treatment plants flowing into the harbors, coves and bays. Septic systems are by far the Bay s largest nitrogen source. Under the Federal Clean Water Act, the EPA is required to adequately permit and regulate the discharge of nitrogen, but has failed to fulfill its legal requirement to do so. It is The Coalition s hope that this lawsuit will push EPA to take the necessary steps to address nitrogen pollution by permitting and regulating these groundwater discharge sources. In turn, our local communities will have to decide - through a thorough and thoughtful planning process how we will clean-up our waters with the most efficient and cost effective combination of expanded sewering, septic system upgrades, community cluster systems and other innovative nitrogen reducing technologies. It is clear that every coastal water body will require a unique plan to ensure water quality is restored. The Coalition is represented in this legal action by the New York City law firm of Sive, Paget & Riesel P.C., a veteran environmental litigation firm whose successes have led to important cleanups on the Hudson River. Photo: Robert Manz Nitrogen pollution from septic systems and sewage treatment plants are slowly destroying the inlets, harbors and salt ponds at the heart of Cape Cod s natural beauty and local economy. The Coalition took legal action in 2010 to force the US EPA to address the issue. 5 THE COALITION FOR BUZZARDS BAY

The Agawam and Wareham Rivers are among the most heavily nitrogen-polluted estuaries within Buzzards Bay. To prevent River Run from further polluting, in 2008 the state established a precedent-setting standard that the development must not add new nitrogen to the river. However, the permit as issued in 2010, underestimated the development s nitrogen impact. After months of negotiations, the Coalition prevailed in a Settlement that requires two years of new monitoring prior to any construction. The results of that science will be used to revise the permit and require the company to fully mitigate the determined amount of nitrogen. n Last winter The Coalition received approval from the Marion Board of Selectmen to investigate whether nitrogen pollution in the wastewater lagoons at the Marion Wastewater Treatment Facility was leaching into the ground and negatively impacting Sippican Harbor. Built in 1969, the 20 acres of unlined wastewater lagoons are a potential pollution source to Sippican Harbor, Aucoot Cove and the Sippican River. Working with Coalition staff, the environmental consulting firm Horsley Witten Group gathered detailed information about the lagoons and groundwater flow in the area. In 2011 The Coalition will review the data with the Town to determine whether the lagoons are leaching and to develop solutions. Bay & Watershed Monitoring The Coalition maintained its commitment to strong science in 2010 in order to better understand the Buzzards Bay ecosystem, its response to human-related impacts, and to guide restoration and protection efforts. Our Baywatchers program completed its nineteenth year and is the largest, most comprehensive volunteer coastal water quality monitoring program in New England. Operated in partnership with the MBL Ecosystems Center in Woods Hole and made possible through the participation of 135 volunteers, the program is the primary source of long-term data assessing the health of each of the bay s 30 major harbors and coves. In addition to coastal water quality, Coalition monitoring programs expanded upstream into watershed s rivers and primary tributaries. n Providing the information needed to better document and understand the collapse of River Herring populations throughout the Buzzards Bay Watershed, Coalition staff and volunteers monitored the spring herring run on the Agawam, Wankinko, and Acushnet Rivers for the 5th consecutive year with electronic fish counters. n Coalition staff and volunteers also monitored the health of important Bay tributary streams with river flow and temperature gauges on the Mattapoisett and Acushnet Rivers. Other Actions n The Coalition and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts appealed the U.S. District Court decision which allows the US Coast Guard to block sections of the Massachusetts Oil Spill Prevention Act of 2004 without undertaking the environmental review required by the National Environmental Policy Act. The 2004 MA oil spill law was passed in response to the 2003 Bouchard oil spill in Buzzards Bay and contains strict regulations designed to prevent another spill. Bourne, Fairhaven, Falmouth, Gosnold, Marion, Mattapoisett, Rochester, Wareham, Westport and New Bedford filed amicus briefs in support of our position with the Court. n In September, The Coalition for Buzzards Bay called on the US EPA to provide more information regarding their proposed use Confined Aquatic Disposal (CAD) cells for the Superfund cleanup of toxic sediments in lower New Bedford Harbor. The CAD cell proposal advocates dredging a deep hole in the harbor floor to hold contaminated sediment from the lower harbor, capped with clean material. It is unclear how CAD cells could provide greater protection to human health and the environment than the current offsite disposal method. n Our R/V Buzzards Baykeeper provided regular summer pumpout service to boaters on Cuttyhunk Island, keeping nearly 2,000 gallons of sewage pollution from 223 boats out of the Bay and educating boaters about clean boating practices. 8 WATERSHED PROTECTION The health of our Bay, river and drinking water quality is intimately linked to the state of our watershed forests and wetlands. The Coalition s Watershed Protection efforts are aimed at accelerating permanent land preservation efforts in the Buzzards Bay Watershed by initiating and managing land acquisitions and conservation restrictions (CRs) and by helping local land trusts with staff and financial assistance. This work also includes land stewardship ongoing care for the protected lands under our management and active restoration of degraded wetlands and streams throughout our watershed. In 2010, the Coalition worked to close and sign new real estate deals protecting more than 1,000 acres of critical watershed lands. Coalition projects secured nearly $1 million from Town Meetings in Bay towns, and we leveraged local support to garner major contributions from federal, state and foundation grants. Protecting the Drinking Water of the Mattapoisett River Valley The Mattapoisett River Valley is one of the highest land protection priorities in the entire Bay watershed. Providing clean drinking water to more than 24,000 people in the towns of Marion, Mattapoisett, Rochester and Fairhaven, the river and its aquifer demand healthy forests and wetlands to filter pollution and sustain adequate water yields for both people and the river s fish and wildlife. This year we partnered with the four towns and the regional Mattapoisett River Valley Water Supply Protection Advisory Committee to initiate an ambitious effort to protect over 500 acres of land in the river valley spanning Rochester, Mattapoisett and Fairhaven, including a large contiguous tract surrounding Tripps Mill Brook. Essential to this project, and to many of our other preservation efforts, is the Coalition s Bay Lands Revolving Fund. Our $900,000 Revolving Fund makes loans available to local land conservation efforts to help bridge gaps in time between when real estate closings need to occur and when the necessary fundraising can be completed. n The Coalition used the Revolving Fund to pre-acquire 135 acres while we helped the towns obtain the necessary resources to permanently protect these lands. We helped secure local funds and a matching state grant for the Fairhaven Conservation Commission to purchase 60 acres across the street from the Town Forest on New Boston Road immediately adjacent to an 8-acre property that we helped the town acquire in We worked with the Rochester Conservation Commission to secure a grant to protect 10 acres on Wolf Island Road and helped the water departments in Fairhaven and Mattapoisett to secure federal grants to protect important land adjacent to their public drinking water supply wells. n The Coalition will retain ownership of 24 acres along the banks of Tripps Mill Brook where we will conduct stream restoration in the future. We granted a conservation restriction on this parcel to the Mattapoisett Conservation Commission. n Upstream on the Mattapoisett in Rochester, we also used the Revolving Fund to pre-acquire 54 acres of forest and wetlands for the Town of Marion Water Department for drinking water supply protection. This property abuts other properties previously protected by the Coalition and creates a 325 acre block of contiguous protected land along the river. The Coalition will hold a conservation restriction on the property in order to permanently protect it for water quality, wildlife and outdoor recreation. The 500+ acres of forest, wetland and cranberry bogs surrounding Tripps Mill Brook in Mattapoisett and Fairhaven were the Coalition s top priority for protection along the Mattapoisett River in Photo by Skypic.com 7 THE COALITION FOR BUZZARDS BAY

New Bedford Harbor n In 2010, the Coalition created the Acushnet River Reserve, acquiring 5 acres of waterfront to protect the stretch of undeveloped shoreline on the east side of the Acushnet Estuary upstream of the Coggeshall Street Bridge. In an amazing contrast to New Bedford s industrialized shoreline, this part of the harbor still has extensive salt marsh buffered by coastal shrub and forest habitat. We also secured agreements to acquire an additional 15 acres in the area this year. In cooperation with other nearby landowners, including the Towns of Acushnet and Fairhaven, we have the potential to create a 50-acre reserve protecting the largest remaining undisturbed coastal habitat in New Bedford Harbor. We hope to eventually offer public access to this unique and important resource adjacent to the city. n Just upstream, on Coalition-owned land, we advanced our plans to restore the river bank and adjacent riparian wetlands by preparing to remove the largest remaining building at the former Acushnet Saw Mills complex. We also pursued the grant funding necessary to implement the restoration and acquire adjacent lands to expand the conservation property s size. n Just downstream we granted a conservation restriction to the Fairhaven Conservation Commission on our Marsh Island property, just south of Interstate 195, while working with our partners to line up the necessary permits to recreate 12 acres of former salt marsh at that location. n And up at the headwaters of the Acushnet River in Freetown, we completed construction of a trail head access and parking area on the 85-acre Dietlin Woods property that we helped the Fairhaven Acushnet Land Preservation Trust acquire in Visitors are invited to park and explore the forest, fresh water marsh and brook in this quiet corner of the watershed. The Coalition is working to permanently preserve the undeveloped eastern shore of the Acushnet River Estuary. Nasketucket Woods The Coalition resolved a notoriously complicated title on a wooded parcel near the Nasketucket River. With the support of our members in the area and a grant that we helped secure for the Town of Fairhaven, we were able to clear up the property s title, purchase the parcel and then convey it to the Fairhaven Conservation Commission. This effort protected a key 8-acre parcel on Bridge Street, creating an ideal entry into the 57 acres of land the Coalition protected in 2009 between the Mariner soccer complex and the East Fairhaven Elementary School, known as Nasketucket Woods. This project benefits sensitive wildlife habitat, water quality in the Nasketucket and creates a great place for trails near the school and the recreation fields. Coalition Land Protection and Stewardship Specialist Jesse Ferreira poses proudly after installing a sign for the town at the entrance to Nasketucket Woods ANNUAL REPORT 8

Dartmouth The Coalition assisted the Dartmouth Natural Resources Trust and the Town of Dartmouth in protecting 22 acres fronting the Dike Creek Estuary off of Apponagansett Bay by securing a grant to pay for necessary survey costs. The landowners, James & Bess Hughes, then donated two conservation restrictions to the Trust and are preparing to donate an additional parcel to the Conservation Commission. Wareham The Coalition also continued its partnership with the Wareham Land Trust by sharing a staff person to advance land conservation at the head of the Bay. This position was instrumental in helping the Land Trust to complete the Great Neck Conservation Project, highlighted by the protection of the waterfront Sacred Hearts Retreat Center. A new and equally exciting partnership with the Land Trust and the Town was begun in 2010 to protect waterfront lands and the rich resources of the lower Weweantic River and its estuary. Bass Creek at the head of Widows Cove in Wareham is now permanently protected due to the Wareham Land Trust and the Massachusetts Audubon Society s purchase of the Sacred Hearts Retreat Center in Restoring the Sippican River Many Bay rivers are clogged with old dams that disrupt natural processes, including the movement of fish migrating to and from the Bay. The Sippican River in Marion and Rochester has two such dams. In 2010, the Coalition supported the Town of Rochester, Alewives Anonymous and the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries in the construction of an improved fish ladder at the Leonard Pond Dam. Meanwhile, with a grant from American Rivers, we contracted a specialized engineering firm to analyze how to address the crumbling and dangerous Hathaway Pond Dam. The analysis indicated that removing the dam entirely is the most cost effective and environmentally beneficial option and that it would not harm adjacent cranberry bog operations. We are now moving forward with a plan to acquire the property and take down the failing dam. A temporary patch in the failing Hathaway Dam on the Sippican River. The Coalition is moving forward with plans to remove this dam and restore natural fish passage and habitat in the river. 9 THE COALITION FOR BUZZARDS BAY

Treasurer s Report FISCAL YEAR 2010 (JULY 1, 2009-JUNE 20, 2010) While 2010 was certainly a challenging year for all nonprofits due to the struggling national economy, The Coalition for Buzzards Bay continued to grow thanks to the wonderful generosity of its members and supporters. At June 30, 2010, the Coalition s net assets had increased $1.4 million to close the fiscal year at almost $8 million. We saw exceptional growth in our membership due in large part to an unprecedented $500,000 matching grant from an anonymous donor challenging us to increase our membership from 5,000 to 8,000 before December During fiscal 2010, our membership grew by 17% and by June 30th, we were closing in on that 8,000 member target. We successfully reached this goal later in the year! In FY2010 we experienced a 29% drop in government grants as the land protection and restoration projects funded by the $6.7M in penalty funds related to the 2003 Bouchard Oil Spill near completion. These funds have financed a number of wetlands restoration projects and the protection of more than 1,000 acres across the watershed We continue to work hard to diversify our funding base so that we can rely less on government funding as we move forward. In May, 2010, the Coalition staff moved into the newly renovated Buzzards Bay Center in the heart of New Bedford s Waterfront Historic District and National Park. The Center marks The Coalitions first permanent home in its 24 year history and will provide a stable platform from which we can continue to grow the organization. Also notable is that it is fully paid for and was financed without the incursion of long-term debt. The Coalition is a very exciting organization served by a most capable and dedicated staff and generous supporters. While we face many challenges in protecting the Bay we love, I am very confident we will continue to be a strong force for its preservation. 14 Membership Soars Over 8,000 Member Challenge Garners more than 3,000 new members In 2008, The Coalition faced a daunting task: Add 3000 new members to our total membership and reach the 8,000 mark by the end of If successful, an anonymous supporter would donate $500,000 to The Coalition to expand our work to protect and restore the Bay. Following a true community effort that included staff, board members, volunteers, event participants, and local businesses all helping to spread the word, The Coalition met the Membership Challenge with 8,812 members on December 31, Helping us over the Finish Line at the end of 2010 was Dartmouth s Not Your Average Joe s restaurant and its founder Steve Silverstein. NYAJs staff and servers promoted the Coalition s work at the restaurant and were directly responsible for signing up 554 new members in less than two months! Brand communications firm Partners + Simons in Boston also donated their time to develop the promotional campaign strategy and materials for the restaurant, thanks to the help of Coalition Board Member and Partners + Simons Managing Director Chris Demakis. This is a tremendous achievement and we are extremely grateful to everyone who helped us meet the challenge, said Coalition Director of Membership and Events Donna Cobert. This generous donation will be used to expand our education efforts and allow us to act quickly to fend off threats to Bay health. More importantly, expanding our membership as we have over the last eighteen months, is a necessity for building a Bay community of supporters and partners committed to saving Buzzards Bay. 17 Watershed Ride 2010 The Watershed Ride, begun in 2007, is arguably the most scenic cycling event in Southern New England. The 75-mile route encompasses the entire Buzzards Bay Watershed from Westport to Woods Hole, coursing over three recreational bike paths and passing through forests, wetlands, cranberry bogs, and many of The Coalition s conservation projects. In 2010, we added a 35-mile option which begins at the route s halfway point in Rochester, allowing all cyclists to finish together for a celebration picnic at Quissett Harbor. In its brief four-year history, the Ride has grown from 44 cyclists to 105 registrants in Ninety-nine Cyclists took to the road on October 3, 2010, helping to raise awareness of the importance of our watershed lands to the Bay s health and over $52,000 to support The Coalition. Tom Gidwitz earned the yellow jersey by raising the most funds a record $2,880. 18 Swim Buzzards Bay 2010 The 17th Annual Swim Buzzards Bay was held on a sunny July 31, 2010 with a record-breaking 158 registrations and 149 participating swimmers - 54 swimmers joined us for the first time. The swimmers raised $53,336 to support the Coalition, and the top fundraiser was Matt Shenker of Pocasset with over $1,800 in sponsorship donations. Swimmers from ages 12 to 70 followed the 1.2 mile course from Davy s Locker Beach in New Bedford to Fort Phoenix State Beach in Fairhaven, all under the watchful eyes of a fleet of kayak escorts led by Osprey Sea Kayaks, and state and local authorities. In addition to his robust fundraising, Matt Shenker held onto his title as the fastest male overall with a time of 23:13. Morgan McCarthy of New Castle, Delaware, was not far behind: in her first Swim Buzzard Bay, she won fastest female with a time of 24:03. The team SCA Sink or Swim, which included Jonathan Haisman of Dartmouth, Adam S. Barkley of Fall River, William Sheahan of Westport, and Jaren and Tara Hawxwell of North Dighton, won the team trophy, clocking an average time of 27:35. Newcomers may have swelled the participation in this year s swim but the event is also becoming a tradition for more and more swimmers. Debbie Gabriel of New Bedford swam for her fourteenth time, Gerry Payette of Fairhaven for the twelfth time, and Tanya Roy of Wellesley, MA for the eleventh time. Joining them in the Coalition s honorary Cuttyhunk Club, for swimmers who have completed 10 swims, was Jack Leary of Mystic, CT, and joining the Six- Mile Club by completing their fifth Swim are Judy Allen, Mara Honohan, Allison Medina and Amy Sexsmith. The 18th Annual Swim Buzzards Bay will be on Saturday, July 2, 2011 in conjunction with New Bedford s Summerfest.
