1 SUNY New Paltz Student Association 57 th Student Senate 3 rd Regular Meeting February 19, 2014 Agenda Meeting called to order at 8:30 James motioned to approve the minutes and seconded by Zach G. Kelly Motioned to approve the agenda seconded by Amber I. Introductions II.Reports: a. Executive Board (30 mins) 1. President On the agenda for Pres. Cab. Was Open SUNY which is the expansion of online courses. The second item on the agenda was student fees which includes raising the technology fees. Also, SUNY Assembly is March 4 th -6 th. Let s Talk About It committee met on Monday, they discussed race, religion, and diversity. The committee meets on Mondays at 6p.m. 2. Executive Vice President UPD committee didn t meet this Monday. Also, Zachary was hoping to hear from the Health Center in regards to health insurance for transgendered students. There are two options: one would include only hormone therapy, the other would include hormone therapy and surgeries. Other schools cover hormone therapy;

2 there is a current movement with Purchase and Oswego to cover these cases in their insurance policy. 3. Vice President of Academic Affairs Many committees still need to be filled. Jordan will be meeting with the Provost on Friday. Also the late night study room ideas are dwindling so if anyone has any ideas they will greatly be appreciated. 4. Vice President of Finance Conferences- $27,420 General Programing-$43,890 Research-$ 6, Vice President of Programming Absent b. Council of Orgs (5 mins) Monday was council board meeting in which about 10 new clubs were approved. The list of these can be found in the Council of Organizations minutes. 165 old clubs submitted their charter by Monday. Linda and Matt are in the process of forming an inventory committee to monitor the supplies and storage for clubs. c. Senate Chair (5 mins) Senators need to be conscious of their statements because they represent senate. Also, next week there will be real name tags. d. Senate Reports (4 mins each) Kelly- Kelly will be collecting letters to give to the President s office in regards to the marijuana

3 policy. On Friday Kelly is hosting a demonstration at her house this Friday. Kelsey- Motioned to move Brett Shindel before NYPIRG and seconded. Trevor- Today Curriculum Committee met and focused on creating 5 new main core classes. This helps the departments to become more internationally focused. This is will be in effect Fall Nicole- Academic Affairs met with the Provost about SEIs and one of the discussions included making SEIs public for students. This will help when students are choosing classes they will be able to see the feedback. Brie- Made informational Pamphlets; it includes quick information links. This helps to make information more accessible. Lastly, there will be a heterosexism panel held on Friday LC 102 at 12:15. Nadia- The UN class and the Model UN program are on the chopping block due to budget cuts. New Paltz is only one of the few schools that offer these classes. CRC may write a resolution on this however they need the support of senate. Also there is discussion about making Model UN a club instead which would take funding from General programing. CRC meets in the SA office Thursdays at 7p.m.

4 Rachel- SDDP is having an event Thursday Feb 27 th in LC 108. The speaker is very qualified and knowledgeable about criminal justice. Becca- March 6 th New York Students Rising is holding a campaign which lets the State legislators know that the students are disappointed with the increase debt level and raising fees. e. Outside Bodies (3-5 mins each) 1. Brett Shindel- Activism towards ending rape culture. Brett is interested in what students can do to decrease rape culture on campus as well as working with faculty. 2. NYPIRG-Student action meeting for the spring was held this evening, there were over 50 students present. NYPIRG is creating campaign for consumers to know if they are purchasing genetically modified organisms. This campaign will begin Monday in SUB a.m- 4p.m. Lastly, the state energy plan has been drafted, the NYPIRG analyzing team in reviewing the draft. The biggest concern is that the energy plan does not mention frackng. Next Tuesday there will be a tabling day in SUB 100. III.Elections a. Judicial Board Associate Justices: Joseph Noonan- Joseph was a member of CRC and

5 involved in the revamping of the Judicial Board. Double major is Sociology and Philosophy. Joseph is a senior and a TA. Joseph plans on attending law school after New Paltz. Osato motioned to discuss the candidate, this was seconded by Amber. Jesse motioned to vote, thus seconded by Maria. Joseph was voted to the Judicial Board. Chief Justice: Michael Grossman- He is a sophomore double majoring in International Relations and Latin Studies sand a Theater Minor. He is a student in the honors program. He has had previous experience with the proceeding through Mock Congress. He is a dedicated student and has a true passion for the position. Michael is knowledgeable about the role of the Chief Justice. Osato motioned to discuss which was seconded by Amber. Jesse motioned to vote which was seconded by Nadia. b. Academic Affairs Paul Brown- Paul is a first year Education major and he is interested in becoming more involved. Kelsey- Kelsey is a Liberal Arts major, he initial goal when joining senate was to get SEIs to become public. Osato motioned to discuss which was seconded by Paulina. Zach motioned to vote which was seconded by Amber Both candidates were voted to the committee separately. c. BFC( 1 Seat)

6 d. Curriculum( meets wed. 3-4 in fine arts building) e. Budget Goals and Finance f. Educational Technology g. Academic Senate IV.Old Business V.New Business a. Transparency Discussion There is a transparency problem between students and the senate body. The senate body needs to let the students know what is going on so that the student body can be heard. Ideas included: Social Network: Instagram, facebook, wikki Paltz, and New Paltz Confessionals, twitter Updating the website PR Chair Graphic designer attend meetings Projecting on the TVs in the SUB Links and committees information sections Dorm Storming Sending the agenda to the students b. Sexual Assault Discussion On the New Paltz Confessions page there was an admission of a sexual assault. The student body needs a way to condemn these actions and not continue promoting rape culture. Ideas include: Condemning all anonymous site The President of the Frat issuing a formal apology. Mentioned in the Freshman Rape Seminar

7 Jesse motioned to adjourn the meeting and seconded by Amber
