The Advanced Placement Program
AP is... The most widely used academic program in the world A rigorous program administered at secondary schools worldwide, including more than 30 university-level courses & exams. Recognized by universities around the world as a standard of academic excellence A community of global students & educators who are passionate, curious & committed to learning, academic excellence and global citizenship.
AP is... A set of courses that focus on the skills needed to succeed at the university level and in today s global society: Engaging in intense discussions Collaborative problem solving Critical and creative thinking Using multiple perspectives Writing clearly and persuasively AP offers willing & academically prepared students the opportunity to earn university credit, advanced placement or both, and to stand out in the university admission process.
Please see the flyer for the offerings for AP courses next year. Students can choose whole-year courses or semester courses.
The Advanced Placement Program
AP courses are at university level, therefore PAS allows students in Grades 10, 11 & 12 to participate. Students are required to complete: A meeting with either Ms. Carolina or Ms. Warrilow The PAS application pack which includes: Course choice form Eligibility checklist Student self-evaluation Counselor/Principal meeting form Teacher recommendation forms x 3 AP Academic Contract
Any student who completes the application pack fully is able to participate in AP. However, where a concern is raised about a student s ability to succeed in AP, Ms. Warrilow will meet with parents to further discuss the issue before the student is enrolled in the course.
The Advanced Placement Program
Students demonstrate mastery of university-level concepts & skills It s the most widely used academic program in the world Universities worldwide value AP AP is flexible for internationally mobile students AP is modular Students have the opportunity to earn the AP ID (Advanced Placement International Diploma)
70 61 Students who take AP courses and exams are much more likely than their peers to complete a bachelor s degree in four years or less Source: Camara, Wayne (2003). College Persistence, Graduation, and Remediation. College Board Research Notes (RN-19). New York, NY: College Board No AP One AP Two+ AP
College credit can allow you to move into upper-level college courses sooner, pursue a double major, and gain time to study and travel abroad: As a freshman, I was able to skip general ed requirements and head straight into the higher-level classes I wanted to take. Taking AP Exams literally saved me semesters of time. Brent Wiese, University of Iowa
If you earn a qualifying grade on an AP Exam, you can receive credit for the equivalent course at thousands of colleges and universities & save money: I took AP throughout high school because it was the most interesting and well-taught program offered. When I reached college, I realized that I had accumulated a year s worth of credits. I graduated from Michigan s undergraduate business school a full year early, saving $30,000 and a year s time. Nikki Baker, University of Michigan
One of the best standard predictors of academic success at Harvard is performance on Advanced Placement Examinations. William R. Fitzsimmons Dean of Admissions, Harvard University AP Exams affirm the rigor of a student s course work. Though admissions policies vary, if I were a student, I wouldn t assume that the college of my dreams didn t care about AP Exams in the admissions process. Bruce Walker, Director of Admissions University of Texas at Austin
Some of the most competitive scholarship awards value AP Exam grades: Having the AP Exam grade can make the difference when it comes down to awarding precious scholarship dollars. Edwina Harris Hamby, Dean of Admission Fisk University
The Advanced Placement Program
All of the PAS offerings for AP are done online through an ouside provider, K12 icademy. On campus, students will have access to computer labs, the library and will also have the opportunity to use their own laptops to complete coursework.
The Advanced Placement Program
Blended Learning is a student-centered, flexible, self-paced, multimodal approach to learning It is the teaching practice that intersects traditional face-to-face teaching and online teaching It is an increasingly popular instructional model that is helping schools and their communities address issues of student engagement, challenges of student achievement, access to staff professional learning and the expectations of 21st century learners
Blended learning should be approached as not only a temporal construct, but rather as a fundamental redesign of the instructional model with the following characteristics: A shift from lecture-to studentcentered instruction where students become interactive learners in the entire course including face-to-face sessions Increases in interaction between student-instructor, student-student, student-content, and student-outside resources; and Integrated formative and summative assessment mechanisms for student and instructor
A blended learning approach allows teachers to blend quality teaching practices with the increasing availability of collaborative technologies such as video conferencing, interactive whiteboards, mobile devices and web 2.0 tools into schools. Quality Teaching
In Disrupting Class, the authors project that by 2019, 50 percent of all high school courses will be delivered online The Rise of K-12 Blended Learning reports that in the year 2000 roughly 45,000 K-12 students took an online course In 2009 this number rose to more than 3 million K-12 students Distance-learning is being replaced by school-based blended learning environments whereby students learn online in an adult-supervised setting This model offers a more personalized, individualized approach to learning States are beginning to make completion of an online course a graduation requirement: Alabama, Michigan (proposed legislation in other states) Domestic and international private schools beginning to consider a similar graduation requirement to prepare students for 21stcentury learning and work environments
Trends in education and recent events around the world have highlighted the need to be prepared with an online course for both emergency and regular use. Board policy and the employment contract mandates we must provide an online program as a regular feature of our curriculum and in the event that we must temporarily close the facility in response to an emergency. This is the time to employ, test and continually improve our capability with on-line education. In short, we must respond to recent events to revive our efforts to provide a 'viable' on-line program. It appears to me that the K¹² online program offers a platform for doing several things. International School Director, China to school Board of Directors March 17, 2011
Extend course choices / availability Options for advanced learners Summer School opportunities Continuity of learning plans Help students develop 21stCentury skills Meet diverse and individual needs/interests of students Increase student access Competitiveness in local school market
The Advanced Placement Program

The Advanced Placement Program
The Pan American School of Porto Alegre recognizes the importance of the experience of taking an AP exam. All students who enroll in AP courses at PAS must take the exam. Exams usually take place in the first two weeks of May each year.
Colleges and universities give credit for qualifying AP Exam grades, not AP course grades. The confirmation that collegelevel learning took place is in the published results. The AP Exam grade is a national standard that I can understand and rely upon. Joellen L. Silberman, Dean of Enrollment Kalamazoo College
The Advanced Placement Program
Semester AP Courses = US$475 Yearly AP Course Price = US$950 Course fees include online course content, online teacher support, online learning management systems and a transcript to obtain credit.
