5 WHY AM I GIVING THIS PRESENTATION? I started at WMAA on May 5 th 2015 What did I find when I arrived at the Museum. Systems that didn t serve the organization well. Past IT implementations that cost way too much. No single entity responsible for the IT systems. A frustrated user community. A need to fix or replace these systems within five(5) months So what motivated me to make this presentation. A desire to help others avoid the mistakes I saw. The overwhelming amount of marketing materials masquerading as technical information on these types of technologies. A belief that I have useful knowledge I can pass along. A flyer that crossed my desk asking for presentations A moment of weakness!

6 WHAT IS SERVER VIRTUALIZATION? A Virtual Machine (VM) A software program that simulates a physical computer completely, including all interfaces. A Hypervisor A software program that runs VMs on a physical server. Server virtualization A process where a single physical server runs a hypervisor to operate many VMs at the same time. The important takeaway Fewer physical servers means, less energy consumption, less maintenance and less cost, and generally better system performance

9 DOES VIRTUALIZATION MEAN MOVING TO THE CLOUD? Virtualization is part of a physical infrastructure. Cloud services, IAAS Infrastructure as a Service is virtualization in the cloud. Every cloud is composed of a virtual infrastructure. But every virtual infrastructure is not part of a cloud. This presentation is mostly about local virtualization.

In WMAA s primary server room we have the following hardware A primary hypervisor host server A secondary hypervisor host server Router/firewall appliance Phone System Server HVAC system server Two video wall servers Two 48 port wireless AP POE switches Two 48 port wired network switches How many devices do you think would leave if we moved to the cloud? One physical server at most! We have 25 PCs/Laptops, how many would leave if we moved to the cloud. None!

13 MYTHS AND OLD MARKETING TALES CLOUD SERVICES(IAAS) ARE SOME FORM OF MAGIC? Some Inconvenient truths Good consistent bandwidth to the cloud is not cheap. Private WAN average cost per mbps $30 - $60 /month. High quality, low latency, 100mbps symmetric up and down WAN will cost $ $6000 /month. A typical internal network is 10 times quicker! Lower quality public internet bandwidth is cheaper. Public VPN wan connection costs per mbps $ /month Low quality, high latency, asymmetric (100 mbps down, 20 mbps up), WAN will cost $150 - $300/month. A typical internal network is 50 times quicker for uploads! IT skills are needed for acceptable user experience. IT skills are required for successfully cloud and or local virtualization implementation. Low IT skills always result in higher cost and lower performance.

14 WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF USING SERVER VIRTUALIZATION? Save money. Estimates indicate that most single function physical servers are running at an average of only 10 to 15 percent of total capacity. Higher Performance. With virtualization, the host server hardware resources can be utilized to maximize VM performance. Save time. With fewer physical servers, less time is required to do server maintenance. Save energy. Virtualization reduces the number of physical servers, reducing the energy required to power and cool them.

15 WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF USING CLOUD SERVICES(IAAS) Handle Peak Loads. Use to clip peak server loads Handle Fast Growth. Provide necessary infrastructure without long term commitment. World Wide Access Easy to provide external access when necessary. Reduce your network attack surface. Keep your internal systems out of public view. No Brick and Mortar Infrastructure. If you have no physical buildings it makes sense.

16 WHICH APPLICATIONS SHOULD BE HOSTED INTERNALLY If they require a high bandwidth network. File servers Applications that upload and download large files If they require low network latency. Many client server applications will disconnect if the latency is high. If they have critical data. Data that must remain secure and quickly available. If they control or operate facility related functions. Security systems, heating and cooling, etc

17 WHICH APPLICATIONS SHOULD BE HOSTED EXTERNALLY If they are used mostly by external users. Websites servers If demand fluctuates significantly. Applications that are highly seasonal Systems used only to handle peak demand. If rapid growth makes provisioning difficult. Startup and new businesses often have this issue. If the application is a SAAS acquisition It is designed to run on the cloud. If the organization has no brick and mortar facilities. Online and very small organizations fall into this category.

26 WHAT IT SKILLS ARE REQUIRED TO USE VIRTUALIZATION? A good general IT technology background A willingness to learn the tools and techniques Someone who enjoys building successful systems Someone who is smarter than a fifth grader. The typical IT/IS person can do this.

27 SHOULD YOU TAKE ADVICE FROM A RESELLER/VENDOR A simple rule of thumb is never get advice from a reseller. A reseller/vendor is in the business of selling. Their advice is intend to generate a sale. No matter how honest, they are motivated to sell to you. They are not going to send you to their competition. In many cases they are not technically well informed. Their best skill is selling, not technology. Even if what they sell you does the job it is likely overly expensive. Selling you too much is good business and avoids failure to please. Unfortunately it can cost you a significant amount of money for no good reason. No one selling you something is your friend. Good advice is never buy from a friend anyway. Never use a consultant who is can financially gain by his advice. If a consultant is associated with a vendor, he or she will push that vendors products. If the consultant is giving advice that will enhance his profits, his advice is suspect and cannot be trusted. Most articles on Cloud Services are written by vendors or resellers. A word to the wise should be sufficient.
