CHOOSING THE RIGHT RED HAT ENTERPRISE LINUX SUBSCRIPTION Gerry Riveros Senior Manager Solutions, Red Hat May 6, 2011

Subscription refresher What is it? It's how Red Hat sells it products. How does it work? Pay one annual fee and get a set of services from Red Hat. What kind of services? 1) Access to software and software maintenance... 2)... with unlimited upgrade/downgrade and portability rights. 3) Hardware and software certifications. ) Unlimited production and development technical support. 3

On November 10, 2010, Red Hat changed its operating system products' packaging and pricing

Why? Responding to customer feedback. Product mix getting too complex and confusing. Products not designed or priced for how I want to use them. Rules too restrictive for how I use virtualization. Pricing doesn't allow me to fine tune my costs. 5

Why? Here's what Red Hat did: Simplified operating system product portfolio to one product. Designed it for use with a bare metal server, in a virtualized environment, or in a certified public cloud. Added small set of options that allow you to tailor your cost and what your OS can do. Wrapped it up with liberal rules for using Red Hat's operating system in a virtual environment. 6

Simplified product portfolio Made it Modular (just like the Linux kernel). One operating system product with seven optional plug-and-play add-ons. High Availability Load Balancer Resilient Storage Red Hat Enterprise Linux Scalable File System Smart Management Extended Update Support High Performance Network 7

One operating system product One operating system product available in three subscriptions Red Hat Enterprise Linux 1 oo (1-guest) 1 host and 1 guest (-guests) 1 host and guests (unlimited-guests) 1 host and unlimited guests 8

What hypervisors can I use? Old products: Red Hat Xen/KVM New products: Red Hat Xen/KVM VMware ESX or vsphere Microsoft Hyper-V... available in three subscriptions 1 (1-guest) 1 host and 1 guest (-guests) 1 host and guests oo (unlimited-guests) 1 host and unlimited guests 9

How to choose the right subscription for a single server? One question: How much virtualization do you want to do? 10

How to choose the right subscription? Answer = None (I just want an OS for a bare metal server) 1 (1-guest) 1 host and 1 guest (-guests) 1 host and guests oo (unlimited-guests) 1 host and unlimited guests 11

How to choose the right subscription? Answer = A little (I want to run a few virtual machines) 1 (1-guest) 1 host and 1 guest (-guests) 1 host and guests oo (unlimited-guests) 1 host and unlimited guests 12

How to choose the right subscription? Answer = A lot (I want to run lots of virtual machines) 1 (1-guest) 1 host and 1 guest (-guests) 1 host and guests oo (unlimited-guests) 1 host and unlimited guests 13

What are the rules for a virtualized infrastructure? 1) Every host running a VM needs a subscription. 2) Pooling of like subscriptions is allowed. 3) Stacking of like subscriptions is allowed. ) Customers can opt to buy by-the-guest. 1

What are the rules for a virtualized infrastructure? 1) Every host running a VM needs a subscription. In this example, servers 1 and 2 need to have a subscription servers 3 and don't need server subscriptions since they are prohibited from running VMs with Win Win Win Win Win Win #1 Win Win # Win Win #3 Win Win #2 15

What are the rules for a virtualized infrastructure? 2) Pooling of like subscriptions is allowed. s are no longer locked to each server, but can be pooled... Pool of 16 s #1 # #2 #3 16

What are the rules for a virtualized infrastructure? 2) Pooling of like subscriptions is allowed.... and redistributed among the servers in the cluster as desired. #1 #2 # #3 17

What are the rules for a virtualized infrastructure? 3) Stacking of like subscriptions is allowed. Pool of 16 s #1 # #2 #3 18

What are the rules for a virtualized infrastructure? 3) Stacking of like subscriptions is allowed. Pool size increased to 20 s # Stack like subscriptions to increase size of guest pool. #2 #3 19

What are the rules for a virtualized infrastructure? ) Customers can opt to buy by-the-guest. Example: #1 (6 vcpus) 8-sockets 1 8 vcpus #2 # by-the-guest offerings: - (1 virtual machine) (up to 8 vcpus) - (1 virtual machine) (up to 16 vcpus) - (1 virtual machine) (up to 32 vcpus) 8-sockets #3 (12 vcpus) 8-sockets 1 16 vcpus 8-sockets 20

How to choose the right subscription for a virtualized infrastructure? Average number of VMs per host = Total number of VMs running in the cluster Number of servers in the cluster 21

How to choose the right subscription? Average = 1 or less 1 (1-guest) 1 host and 1 guest Average = 2 to 6 (-guests) 1 host and guests Average = 7 or more oo (unlimited-guests) 1 host and unlimited guests 22
