1 DRAFT PROGRAM LIST Texas College Counseling and Career Development Conference Austin, Texas Austin Marriott South May 18-19, 2014 *This is a draft program list for the 2014 College Counseling and Career Development Conference. All co-presenters may not be listed. Scheduled times and room assignments will be available on or around Thursday, April 24. Sunday * 3:15 4:45PM * 90 Minute Workshop 1. What About the Parents: Addressing the Needs of College Students with Children Bernadette Smith MEd Caren Randle MEd College Counseling, Mental Health Counseling Twenty-three percent of college students in the US are parents. Of that population, 39% are considered low-income. As we already know, low-income students face challenges that can prevent them from completing college. Thus, low-income parents experience additional challenges. This session will provide information that impacts student parents as well as identify various techniques and strategies that can be implemented to assist the student in attaining their degree and achieving their goals. 2. Engaging Millennial Students: Transitions from High School to College Pamela Moss Med LMFT LBSW SusAnn Key MA LPC College Student Development & Counseling, College Counseling College counselors and educators are often challenged to motivate students. In this interactive session, participants will explore characteristics commonly attributed to millennial students and how to integrate student needs with creative applications designed to engage and inspire.

Empowering Students to Articulate Their Career Narratives and Make Sound Career Next Steps Margaret Bloomer MA Career Development & Employment Counseling This presentation will provide concrete resources to aid you in helping your students to possess self-insight, develop powerful career narratives, examine current economic data, and cultivate the critical thinking skills necessary to make a sound career decision. The Forgotten Student: Returning Adults and Graduate Students in Career Services Shirley Rowe MEd Career Development & Employment Counseling Most of us are under the impression that graduate students and returning adults have a clear picture of their goals in furthering their education. Research, however, tells a different story. We will examine the career-related needs of these students as reported in current published materials. The audience will share practices and experiences to help you develop a more inclusive program. 5. The Essence of Success is Creative Teamwork Elladean Lopez MA Angelica Khorram MA College Counseling, Career Development & Employment Counseling As colligate budgets decrease, we at San Antonio College find that the need for mental health support among students is increasing. This presentation will discuss ways to maintain effective mental health support for our diverse student population while decreasing the risk of counselor burn out.

In this interactive session you will learn hands-on strategies for helping students to find their calling or career purpose, an excellent starting point for career exploration. Overcoming Barriers to Creating a Safe Space/Ally Program: Implementation at Texas Colleges and Universities Cyndi Matthews PhD Jamaica Chapple PhD LPC-S College Student Development & Counseling, Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual & Transgender Issues Safe Space/Ally programs are part of a nationwide effort to help colleges, schools, and universities create environments that are supportive and safe to everyone, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression. Presenters will discuss what a Safe Space/Ally program is, the need for these programs on college campuses, the need for counselors to be involved in the Safe Space/Ally program, and challenges encountered while implementing a program in a university setting. 8. Counselors: What do Threat Assessment Team Leaders Think About You LaShondra Manning MA College Counseling, Counselor Education & Supervision This presentation will examine the perception of TAT leaders on the roles, preparedness, competence, & support of college counselors serving on their teams. Attendees will be involved in discussion, receive handouts, and gain insight on the expectations that TAT leaders have for counselors. 9. Supporting First Generation and Undecided Students Through Career Counseling Kate Robbins MA Career Development & Employment Counseling, College Student Development & Counseling This presentation will focus on supporting students who are first generation, or undecided majors. Supporting this at-risk population through career exploration and counseling can help them to develop as more persistent students and retain them to graduation.

Hear the basics of HIPAA requirements. Learn HOW to apply policies and procedures to protect the privacy of personal records in your setting. Understand the consequences of ignoring the new laws. 11. Little is Much: Making the Most of Available Resources Within a College Counseling Center Steve Bain DMin LPC-S Jo Elda Alaniz MS College Counseling, Administration & Leadership This presentation will focus on the challenges and possibilities limited resources have on University/College Counseling Centers. Attention will be given to collaboration, creativity, dialogue, advocacy, and ethical considerations involved in doing more with less. 12. Transitions From High School to College: An Exploratory Study of Wellness Factors among First-Year College Students Rebecca Frels PhD Randy Davis PhD College Student Development & Counseling, Counselor Education & Supervision This session presents the research findings alongside dialogue with participants pertaining to the p cognitive, emotional, physiological, relational, and community resources and the construct of hope that impact successful transition from high school to college. A second purpose is to establish how first-year college students perceive wellness factors that contribute to hope for attaining their academic goals. Findings of the study for practical school transitions and first-year support.

Poised to Lead: Preparing Professional School Counselors Through Sustained Development to Lead Local College and Career Readiness Initiatives Karen Alexander PhD Cindy Miller MA College Student Development & Counseling, Career Development & Employment Counseling College counselors need a toolkit of resources to be Poised to Lead their guidance programs and students. This session will review a framework for sustained professional development that could be replicated with College Counselors. The framework is based upon components necessary for quality guidance and counseling and includes an interactive free online application that catalogs over 800 college and career planning resources available at your fingertips! Ageism in Higher Education: Counseling the Non-Traditional Student Jamaica Chapple PhD Cyndi Matthews PhD Teresa Espino Room: Lone Star B College Student Development & Counseling Challenges associated with ageism or age discrimination on traditional college campuses continues to be an under acknowledged and under-reported form of bullying for the older adult non-traditional student. Presenters will discuss the concept and context of ageism, mental and behavioral health approaches and experiential techniques for working with those impacted by ageism, and methods of advocacy to promote the overall emotional well-being for the older adult non-traditional student. 15. Facilitating Student Success: Help College Students Make Informed Decisions About Using Student Loans

The study examines how career choices impact financial outcomes. This session will also present a tool based on the study, called Major Choices, that helps users link debt by major to expected earnings. An additional tool that explores salaries by job, called Career Choices, will also be presented. 16. Twitter Wars in College: Cyber-Bullying and Electronic Harassment Among Students Chris Leeth PhD College Counseling, College Student Development & Counseling Social media, electronic communication, and anonymity can be tremendous source of anxiety for the students we work with. This program focuses on the ways that students may be antagonized via technology, the effects of being bullied, and the ways counselors may work with students through these issues 17. Advising Students for Career and Technical Education: Are You Ready? Susan Womack BA Matt Miller MA Career Development & Employment Counseling, College Student Development & Counseling Career and Technical Education (CTE) prepares youth and adults for a wide range of high wage, high skill, and high demand careers. Are you prepared to advise students on CTE? MPOWER Texas is an ecourse designed to give counselors the tools they need to increase their knowledge and effectiveness advising students on CTE opportunities available. This session will explore the MPOWER Texas ecourse and provide opportunities to offer feedback on the needs of today s college counselors.
