1 NURSING INFORMATICS AUSTRALIA (NIA) Informatics for Nurses and Midwives STRATEGIC PLAN HISA s Overarching goal HISA Strategic Plan improvements in Australian healthcare and health outcomes are achieved through the use of information and technology NIA Overarching goal NIA strategic plan Australian healthcare and health outcomes are supported through the use of information, communication and technology HISA s contributions 1. HISA creates and fosters communities of interest via which the contributions of health information and technologies to healthcare improvement are advocated, designed and where possible facilitated. NIA contributions 1.1 NIA is recognised as the preeminent nursing body for nursing informatics 1.2 NIA is represented on the HISA board 2. HISA delivers learning and development programs that motivate and enable healthcare stakeholders to improve healthcare through the use of information and technology 2.1 NIA promotes educational opportunities in nursing informatics 2.2 NIA engages with stakeholders to support their education, involvement and participation in health informatics 2.3 NIA will encourage networking opportunities 3. HISA certifies Australian health informatics professionals, embracing results orientation 3.1 NIA will support nurses and midwives to reach certification 3.2 NIA will support workforce development and capacity development in the growing health informatics environment 1 Nursing Informatics Australia (NIA) Strategic Plan Final Version August 2013
2 4. HISA monitors, promotes and undertakes and/or catalyses research on the use of information and technology to improve healthcare 5. Recognising that Health Information Technology (HIT) is a critical enabler for the health sector, HISA monitors the state of health informatics in Australia 6. Partner with stakeholder representative groups to articulate and achieve common goals 4.1 NIA promotes research in nursing informatics 5.1 NIA will provide nursing informatics expertise on a state, national and international level 6.1 NIA will partner with other stakeholder representative groups to articulate and achieve common goals 2 Nursing Informatics Australia (NIA) Strategic Plan Final Version August 2013
3 ACTION PLAN NIA Strategic Plan 1.1 NIA is recognized as the preeminent nursing body for nursing informatics To raise the profile of NIA and ensure there is NIA influence, write an introductory letter to DoHA, Medicare, NIA chair end 2013 CAN, CoNNO, HWA, ANF, MSIA, state and national chief nurses, Australian Consumers Forum, State and National Health Ministers (including the shadow health ministers) and other health bodies involved in the current development of health informatics Develop Nursing Informatics position statement to distribute (research from an international perspective, IMIA NI) NIA committee (vice chair) end2013 Advise HISA on how to promote Nursing Informatics (utilize HISA administrative services, editorials, meetings etc) NIA to have a permanent position on the HISA Board ASAP Marketing at Universities and Expo s in collaboration with the Australian College of Nursing Create a flyer for NIA for distribution via HISA Sent to HISA Admin Update yearly 1.2 NIA to have permanent representation on the HISA board NIA to lobby the HISA board about the importance of having a nurse on the board NIA committee via Chair ASAP 3 Nursing Informatics Australia (NIA) Strategic Plan Final Version August 2013
4 NIA Strategic Plan 2.1 NIA promotes educational opportunities in Nursing Informatics competencies to be NIA Chair End 2013 nursing informatics promoted and to be submitted for inclusion to the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council (ANMAC) Registered Nurse Standards for Practice NIA maintains a representative on the HISA certification group 2.2 NIA engages with stakeholders to support their education, involvement and participation in health informatics Write journal articles on latest happenings in Nursing Informatics and submit to nursing and health informatics journals ie AJN and Pulse IT, including a conference synopsis - NIA to measure the number of nursing informatics articles printed annually - Engage influential journalist - Donna AJN journalist Pulse IT journalist NIA Chair to contact both Aug NIA will encourage networking opportunities Promote benefits of nursing informatics to nurses, and the membership benefits Working with each state branch to have a nursing focused forum once a year NIA committee to write the benefits All of NIA committee to work at achieving this through their work, NIA conference, Website access for all members 3.1 NIA will support nurses and midwives to reach certification 3.2 NIA will support workforce development and capacity development in the growing health informatics environment Nursing Informatics recognised as a specialty within nursing Informatics credentialing NIA member to be included on this group. 5 NIA Strategic Plan 4.1 NIA promotes research in nursing informatics Promotion of nursing research and presentation via the annual NIA Conference NIA and members 5.1 NIA will provide nursing informatics expertise on a state, national and international level NIA committee to attend conferences as representatives of NIA NIA will provide consultants, representatives and feedback to all developments in the health informatics environment on a local, state, national and international level NIA committee Involvement with CoNNO, IMIA NI NIA 6.1 NIA will partner with other stakeholder representative groups to articulate and achieve common goals Provide responses to any proposed policy development in relation to ehealth Lobby and work together with Health Workforce Australia to add informatics as a nursing specialty.
