1 Medical Assistant Course Description Medical Assistant Course Description 1. Course Title: Medical Assistant 2. CBEDs Title: Medical Office Services 3. Job Titles: Refer to Labor Market Survey 4. Course Description: Administrative Medical Assistant: The Administrative Medical Assistant student acquires the secretarial, clerical, and reception skills needed to work in a medical front office. A community learning experience in the front office is added to didactic and laboratory instruction. Course content includes: insurance, office automation, written correspondence, financial record keeping, banking, collections, and medical office management. When combined with the CORE, this course can result in employment as an Administrative Medical Assistant or lead to enrollment in the Clinical Medical Assistant course. Clinical Medical Assistant: The Clinical Medical Assistant student acquires the direct patient contact skills and technical knowledge required to work in the back office of a medical clinic or related health care facility. Added to didactic and laboratory instruction is a community learning experience in the clinical portion of a medical office. Course content includes medical surgical asepsis, assisting with the physical examination, minor office surgery/procedures, electrocardiography, administration of medicine, laboratory skills, assisting with diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, and specialized medical practice. When combined with the CORE, this course can result in employment in a variety of clinical office settings or lead to enrollment in the Administrative Medical Assistant course. 5. Course Prerequisites: Age 16 or older and interested in the field of Medical Assistant. Prior to participation in the Medical Assistant Course, students will need to have a TB clearance. Prior to Community Classroom HEP B series initiated, MMR, TDAP, Varicella, CPR, physical exam, purchase of uniform, parental/guardian form signed (if applicable) which explains the program and expectations of student and completion of the first semester of classroom and lab instruction. 6. 2 Medical Assistant Course Description 8. Course Outline: A. Career Preparation Standards/SCANS: All work site learning methodologies including Community Classroom and Cooperative Vocational Education will be utilized when appropriate. Students will understand how personal skill development affects their employability. They will exhibit positive attitudes, self confidence, honesty, perseverance, self discipline, and personal hygiene. They will manage time and balance priorities as well as demonstrate a capacity for lifelong learning. Students will understand key concepts in group dynamics, conflict resolution, and negotiation. They will work cooperatively, share responsibilities, accept supervision, and assume leadership roles. They will demonstrate cooperative working relationships across gender and cultural groups. Students will exhibit critical thinking skills, logical reasoning, and problem solving. They will apply numerical estimation, measurement, and calculation, as appropriate. They will recognize problem situations; identify, locate and organize needed information or data; and propose, evaluate, and select from alternative solutions. Students will understand principles of effective communication. They will communicate both orally and in writing. They will listen attentively and follow instructions, requesting clarification or additional information as needed. Students will understand occupational safety issues including the avoidance of physical hazards in the work environment. They will operate equipment safely so as not to endanger themselves or others. They will demonstrate proper handling of hazardous materials. Students will understand career paths and strategies for obtaining employment within their chosen fields. They will assume responsibility for professional growth. They will understand and promote the role of their field within a productive society, including the purposes of professional organizations. Students will understand and adapt to changing technology by identifying, learning, and applying new skills to improve job performance. They will effectively employ technologies relevant to their fields. Students will understand complex inter-relationships of systems. 3 Medical Assistant Course Description Students will monitor and correct performance distinguish trends, predict impacts on system operations, diagnose systems performance and correct malfunctions. Students will improve or design systems suggest modifications to existing systems and develop new or alternative systems to improve performance. Students will understand all aspects of the industry including: planning, management, and finance; technical and production skills; underlying principles of technology; labor, community, health, and environmental issues. B. Content Area Skills: Students will be able to understand and demonstrate competencies in the following areas that may lead to entry-level employment: Administrative Medical Assistant: Office clerk/receptionist Health insurance, Billing/Coding procedures Financial record keeping & banking Correspondence Collections Medical office management Electronic Medical Records HIPAA Compliance Clinical Medical Assistant: Medical/Surgical Asepsis Physical examination assist Patient support in preparing for minor office surgery procedures Electrocardiography Administration of medication Laboratory skills Assisting with diagnostic and therapeutic procedures Specialized medical practices Electronic Medical Records HIPAA Compliance C. 18 Students grade in the class will be determined by demonstrating competency at the end of each module through written testing, skills performance, ability to state relation between theory and practical application, ability to demonstrate knowledge of theory given through practical application in clinical setting/lab. Medical Assisting Assessment Instruments and Strategies Upon successful completion: Students achieving 90% or higher in the classroom including community classroom, will receive a Gold Seal on his or her Certificate of Completion. Students achieving 80% academically and completing community classroom, will receive a Certificate of Completion. High School Students completing the course with 60% or above will receive high school credit only.
