SURGICAL TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM HILLYARD TECHNICAL CENTER Pre-requisites Courses for Surgical Technology Instructor: Dr. Jeremy Traas Anatomy and Physiology Course Overview: Anatomy and Physiology is a pre-requisite for the allied health programs at Hillyard Technical Center. This course provides prospective students an opportunity to study the structure and functions of important organ systems from the molecular level of the entire body. The student will learn how the body functions, how to maintain its normal functions, and the consequences of injury and disease. The course will combine lectures, in class discussion, small and large group activities, and homework assignments and readings. This course will follow the AST Core Curriculum 6 th Edition guidelines. Please note: Guideline: Projected by 8/1/2021, all programs should award a minimum of an Associate Degree upon program completion Articulation with NCMC is in place
HILLYARD TECHNICAL CENTER SURGICAL TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM COURSE DISCRIPTIONS MT 101/ST Medical Terminology for the Surgical Technologist Instructor: Linda VanDyke This course is designed to prepare the students to intelligently communicate within the medical profession. This will in turn provide the resources to develop skills necessary to achieve their educational goals which provides the student with a marketable career in Surgical Technology at the completion of this program. Desired Outcomes 1. Identify, combine and write prefixes, word roots, and suffixes. 2. Write and pronounce medical terms 3. Identify medical terms components by body systems Phar100/ST Pharmacology for the Surgical Technologist Instructor: Teckla Willumsen The Pharmacology course is designed to provide the student with learning opportunities which will enable him/her to apply scientific principles of Biologic Science to Pharmacology. Emphasis is placed on the relationship of drugs to the surgical patient. Contents include, Introduction to Pharmacology, Applied Surgical Pharmacology and Anesthesia. This is a very interactive class. Many assignments will be done in groups or pairs. Critical thinking and researching the material, with lab interaction will be the bulk of this Pharmacology Course.
IST 102/ST Introduction to Surgical Technology Instructors: Linda VanDyke and Teckla Willumsen The Introduction to Surgical Technology course is designed to provide the student with the knowledge of how to function in the health care setting with emphasis in surgical care of the patient. Students will gain knowledge of the global aspect of health care as it pertains to the surgical technologist. FST 100/ST Fundamentals of Surgical Technologist Instructors: Linda VanDyke and Teckla Willumsen The Fundamentals Course is designed to acquaint the student with the skills necessary to function as in entry level Surgical Technologist. Laboratory experience is focused so the student will achieve a satisfactory level of performance. Instruction will include aseptic technique, surgical scrub, gowning and gloving, establishing and maintaining the sterile field, draping, needles, sutures, basic instrumentation, preparation and sterilization of instrumentation and supplies. Students will learn to work with and care for equipment in both the scrub and circulating roles. Students will learn how to position and transport patients by applying principles of anatomy and physiology. This course will include both classroom and hand-on lab training in our two mock operating rooms. This allows the student the knowledge to apply principle to theory and practicum. This program follows the AST 6 th Edition Core Curriculum. Specific course outlines 1. Introduction to Surgical Technology a. Orientation to Surgical Technology b. Legal Concepts, Risk Management, and Ethical Issues c. The Surgical Patient
d. Special Populations e. Physical Environment and Safety Standards 2. Principles and Practice of Surgical Technology a. Biomedical Science b. Preventing Perioperative Disease Transmission c. Hemostasis, Emergency Situations, and All Hazards Preparation d. Instrumentation, Equipment, and Supplies e. Wound Healing, Sutures, Needles, and Stapling Devices f. Surgical Case Management (Outline from 4 th edition Surgical Technology for the Surgical Technologist Text) Micro108 Microbiology Lecture Micro108L Microbiology Lab Instructor: Dr. Jeremy Traas The Microbiology Course is unique to other courses you have taken previously. While there are some of the basic concepts that remain and the organ systems from anatomy and physiology will be touched upon, microbiology is a stand-alone class that will be taught as a unique collage level course. This class will supply the foundation for microscopic and macroscopic organisms that you will encounter in your career as a surgical technologist. This course provides students an opportunity to study and learn microbiology for Health Care Providers. It will combine lecture, in-class discussion, small and large group activities, homework assignments, and readings. As part of the course we study the different types of microorganisms that can cause disease in humans which include: bacteria, viruses, protozoans, helminthes, and fungi.
CIST104 Clinical I CIIST105 Clinical II Instructors: Teckla Willumsen and Linda VanDyke The Clinical Course is designed to acquaint the student with the skills necessary to function as an entry level Surgical Technologist. Preceptor will provide guided instruction and reinforcement of the standards in the clinical setting. This will include, but not limited to the following: 1. Aseptic technique 2. Gowning and gloving 3. Establishing and maintaining a sterile field 4. Draping techniques in all specialties 5. Use of and securing needles and sutures per standards; as well as other devices a. Basic Instrumentation b. Preparation and sterilization techniques of instrumentation and supplies c. Receiving and labeling medications d. All roles in the operating room in which a surgical technologist will function. Through this clinical experience the student will be able to reinforce their knowledge of the care of equipment in both the first scrub role (Mayo/passing instrumentation), as well as second scrub role (retractor holder providing exposure/camera in laparoscopic procedures, first assisting surgeon), and circulating role. The student must complete 120 scrubbed cases (80 in the First Scrub Role, and 40 in the Second Scrub Role) to graduate.
PILST106 Procedures Lecture Instructors: Linda VanDyke and Teckla Willumsen The course instructs the student in the principles and skills required to assist in procedures for: 1. Diagnostic procedures a. Wound care b. GI procedures 2. General Surgery Procedures 3. Obstetric and Gynecologic Surgeries 4. Ophthalmic Surgery 5. Otorhinolaryngology Surgery 6. Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery 7. Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeries 8. Genitourinary Surgery 9. Orthopedic Surgery 10. Cardiothoracic Surgery 11. Peripheral Vascular Surgery 12. Neurosurgery PILST 106 L Procedures Lab This course provides an introduction to selected basic, intermediate and advanced surgical specialties students are exposed to during their clinical rotations. Emphasis is placed on related surgical anatomy, pathology, and procedures which enhance theoretical knowledge of patient care, instrumentation, supplies, and equipment. Upon completion, students should be able to correlate, integrate, and apply theoretical knowledge of the course topics to the clinical operative environment.
This hands-on portions of Procedures follows the procedures list in the Procedure Lecture course. During this course the students will also review and prep for their national certification exam, using study guides/online review provided. PATH100/ST Pathophysiology Instructor: Dr. Jeremy Traas This course is designed to provide general knowledge and functions of the human body in disease and illness. The main focus topics will be: Understanding cell structure as it correlates to disease and pathologies as they relate to each body system. Updated lv/tw 3/2016
