5 Device Management 1. LAPTOP CHECK IN AND OUT 1.1) Laptop Distribution/Check-Out Laptops will be distributed out to the students in their classrooms. Parents and students must complete the following forms in InfoSnap: 1) Laptop Liability and Responsibility Form 2) Student Pledge Document 3) Take Home Permission Form 4) Student and Edmodo Permission Slip 1.2) Laptop Collection/Check-In All laptops, chargers, and sleeves must be returned at the end of each school year to be serviced, and stored safely for the summer. Students who withdraw, are suspended, expelled, or terminate enrollment at Carson City School District for any reason, must return their laptop prior to the date of termination. If a student fails to return the laptop at the end of the school year or upon termination of enrollment at Carson City School District, that student will be subject to criminal prosecution or civil liability. The student will also pay the replacement cost of the laptop ($400). Failure to return the laptop will result in a theft report being filed with the Carson City Sheriff s Department. Just like a textbook or library book, laptops are the property of Carson City School District and students are responsible for returning them in reasonable condition. Students will be charged a $20 repair fee of any needed repairs regardless of damage or cause, not to exceed the actual replacement cost of the laptop ($400). 5

6 Responsible Care and Use 2. TAKING CARE OF YOUR LAPTOP Students are responsible for the general care of the laptop issued to them by the school. Laptops that are damaged, broken, or fail to work properly should be taken to your homeroom teacher. 2.1) General Precautions 1) The laptop is school property and all users will follow Carson City School District s AUP (Acceptable Use Policy). 2) Only use a clean, soft cloth to clean the screen and do not use cleansers or liquids of any type. 3) Insert cords and cables appropriately, do not force when plugging in. 4) Laptops must remain free of any writing, drawing, stickers, or labels other than the provided labels and stickers. 5) Laptops should always be stored in a secure location or supervised directly by the student to whom it is assigned. For instance, electronic devices should never be left in a car, gym, before/after school programs, or any unsupervised area. 6) Students are responsible for keeping their laptop s battery charged for each day. 2.2) Carrying Laptops We recommend each student carry their laptop inside a backpack to and from school. Students must use a laptop sleeve for additional protection and care and must be used. Do not over-stuff your backpack. Do not squeeze or put pressure on the laptop as this may cause screen damage. 2.3) Laptop Care Just like any school property issued to a student for individual use, students will be held responsible for maintaining their individual laptops and keeping them in good working order. Students and parents are responsible for any and all damage. 1) Laptops that malfunction or are damaged must be reported immediately. Device repairs must be handled through the school. Students are responsible for the actual cost of damages - not to exceed the cost of replacement. 2) Laptop batteries must be charged and ready for each day of school. 3) Laptops that are stolen must be reported immediately to a building administrator. 2.4) Screen Care The laptop s screen can be damaged if subjected to rough treatment. The screens are particularly sensitive to damage from excessive pressure on the screen. 1) Do not lean on the top of the laptop when it is closed. 2) Do not place anything on the laptop that could put pressure on the screen. 3) Do not place anything in the carrying case that will press against the cover. 6

7 4) Clean the screen with a soft, dry cloth or anti-static cloth. 5) Take care not to bump the laptop against lockers, walls, car doors, floors, etc., as it will eventually break the screen. 6) General care is expected at all times. 2.5) Nonfunctioning or Broken Laptop If you have a broken or nonfunctioning laptop you must take the laptop to your homeroom teacher. You will be issued a loaner laptop and as soon as possible your original laptop will be repaired or replaced. If the cause for a nonfunctioning laptop is determined to be due to negligence then you and your teacher will fill out an Incident Form. The Incident Form must be signed by your parent/guardian. You and your parents will be charged according to the necessary repairs. The loaner laptop will be issued as a daily checkout laptop and your privilege to take the laptop home will be revoked until fines have been paid. Once payment has been received you will be issued the repaired laptop or a new one and take home privileges will be allowed if parents/guardian gives permission. 3. RESPONSIBLE USE The use of Carson City School District s technology resources is a privilege, not a right, and is not transferable or extendible by students to people or groups outside the district. The use of technology resources terminates when a student is no longer enrolled with Carson City School District. This handbook is provided to make all users aware of the responsibilities associated with efficient, ethical, and lawful use of technology resources. If a person violates any of the rules in this handbook, privileges may be terminated, access to the Carson City School District technology resources may be denied, and the appropriate disciplinary action shall be applied. Each school s progressive discipline policy shall be applied to student infractions. The Internet can bring a wealth of educational material to the classroom, but may also contain material that is inappropriate in an educational setting. The Carson City School District filters websites believed to be inappropriate in compliance with the federal Children s Internet Protection Act (CIPA) and Children s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). However, on a global network it is impossible to control all materials. The Carson City School District cannot and does not believe that inappropriate material can be completely filtered. Violations may result in disciplinary action up to and including suspension/expulsion for students. When applicable, law enforcement agencies may be involved. 3.1) School Responsibilities 1) Provide Internet access and student educational accounts through Carson City School District issued . 2) Provide Internet filtering of inappropriate materials. 3) Provide network data storage areas. Carson City School District reserves the right to review, monitor, and restrict information stored on or transmitted via Carson City School District owned equipment and to investigate inappropriate use of resources. 7

8 4) Provide guidance to aid students in use of the laptop and Internet resources and help assure student compliance of the Acceptable Use Policy. 5) Provide software on laptops to help prevent unapproved software installation and settings. 3.2) Student Responsibilities 1) Using laptops in a responsible and ethical manner. 2) Obeying general school rules concerning behavior and communication that apply to the laptop and other technology/computer use. 3) Use of any information obtained via the Internet is at your own risk. Carson City School District specifically denies any responsibility for the accuracy or quality of information obtained through its services. 4) Immediately report any inappropriate digital content to an adult. 5) Help the Carson City School District protect its users by contacting any staff member about any security problems encountered. 6) Monitoring all activity on their laptop/account(s). 7) Students should always secure their laptop after they are done working to protect their work and their laptop. 8) If a student should receive and/or encounter inappropriate digital content, he/ she should immediately notify an adult. 9) Students must return their laptop, charger and sleeve at the end of each school year. Students who withdraw are suspended or expelled, or terminate enrollment from school for any other reason, must return their individual school laptop prior to the date of termination. 3.3) Parent/Guardian Responsibilities 1) Attend parent information night with your 3 rd 5 th grade child. 2) Talk to your child about safety and the standards that your child should follow on the use of the Internet, just as you do on the use of all media information sources such as television, telephones, movies, and radio. 3) On the Take Home or Keep at School Permission Form if you select Option #2, understand that your child is still responsible for meeting all class assignments/requirements. 3.4) Student Activities Strictly Prohibited 1) Installing/downloading software or transmission of copyrighted materials. 2) Any action that violates existing School Board policy or public law. 3) Sending, accessing, uploading, downloading, or distributing offensive, profane, threatening, pornographic, obscene, or sexually explicit materials. 4) Changing of laptop s settings (exceptions: personal settings such as font size, brightness, etc.). 5) Downloading software/applications. 6) Gaining access to other student s accounts, files, and/or data. 7) Use of district issued Internet/ accounts for financial or commercial gain or for any illegal or inappropriate activity. 8) Use of anonymous and/or false communications. 8

9 9) Give out personal information over the Internet. 10) Participation in credit card fraud, electronic forgery or other forms of illegal behavior. 11) Vandalism (any malicious attempt to harm or destroy hardware, software or data, including, but not limited to the uploading or creation of computer viruses or computer programs that can infiltrate computer systems and/or damage software components) of school equipment will not be allowed. 12) Creating, transmitting, or accessing materials that are obscene, offensive, threatening or otherwise intended to harass, demean, or bully recipients. 13) Bypassing Carson City School District s web filter. 14) Manipulating screen content with intent to deceive. 3.5) Legal Propriety 1) Comply with trademark and copyright laws and all license agreements. Ignorance of the law does not allow immunity. If you are unsure, ask a teacher or parent. 2) Plagiarism is a violation of student handbook and classroom policies. Give credit to all sources used, whether quoted or summarized, including all forms of media on the Internet, such as graphics, movies, music, and text. 3) Use or possession of hacking software is strictly prohibited and violators will be subject to state or federal law resulting in criminal prosecution or disciplinary action by Carson City School District. 4. PROTECTING & STORING YOUR LAPTOP 4.1) Electronic Device Identification A student s electronic device will be labeled in the manner specified by the technology department and can be identified in the following ways: 1) Serial number 2) Carson City School District label 3) Student label found on the lid 4.2) Storing Your Electronic Device When students are not using their laptops, they should be stored in a safe location. If the student is storing the laptop in their assigned classroom, nothing should be placed on top of the laptop. Students with permission should take their laptops home every day afterschool, regardless of whether or not they are needed. Laptops must be shut down when stored in sleeves to avoid overheating. Laptops should not be stored in a vehicle. 4.3) Laptops Left in Unsupervised Areas Under no circumstances should a laptop be left in unsupervised areas. Unsupervised areas include the school grounds, including but not limited to the lunchroom, gym, locker rooms, library media centers, unlocked classrooms, and hallways. Any laptop left in these areas is in danger of being stolen. If a laptop is found 9

10 in an unsupervised area, it will be taken to the office and dealt with as a disciplinary matter. 5. REPAIRS AND RESPONSIBILITY FOR LAPTOPS Students are expected to use their laptop in accordance with this handbook, Carson City School District s Acceptable Use Policy, and any applicable laws. Students are responsible for maintaining a working laptop at all times and shall use care to ensure that the laptop is not damaged. Carson City School District reserves the right to charge the student or parent up to the full cost for repair or replacement when damage/loss occurs due to negligence as determined by administration and/or civil authorities. 5.1) Cost of Repairs Students/parents will be held responsible for ALL damage to their laptop including, but not limited to: broken screens, cracked plastic pieces, missing keys, broken track pad, inoperability, etc. Should the cost to repair exceed the cost of purchasing a new device, the student/parent will be charged full replacement value. Lost items such as cases and cables will be charged the actual replacement cost. The fixed rates for repair are set as follows: Repair fee (per repair) regardless of damage or cause.$20 Lost/broken AC adapter/charger.$25 Battery Replacement.$80 Lost, non-repairable or stolen laptop.$ DISCIPLINE All laptops will be used in a responsible, efficient, ethical, and legal manner. Violations may lead to disciplinary action or loss of laptop use privileges or both, and parents will be contacted. This list is not complete; additions can be added. 6.1) Minor Violations 1) Communicating by using or Edmodo, or other electronic means during class time when use is not related to class. 2) Game playing on the laptop at school during class time when use is not related to class or approved by the teacher. 3) Knowingly accessing non-educational websites during class time when use is not related to class or when teacher permission was not given. 10

11 4) Adjusting or changing laptop settings without permission of Carson City School District staff. 6.2A) Major Violations 1) Use of someone else s account. 2) Moving, deleting, or changing files/folders not on your own laptop. 3) Removing or damaging computer hardware. 4) Bypassing the Carson City School District s filter. 5) Viewing or showing unauthorized materials, images, and or websites is prohibited. 6) Installing software. 7) Viewing or showing, depicting, suggesting or implying illegal activity, drug use, or gambling. 8) Viewing, showing or encouraging violence against a living being or physical property. 9) Viewing or showing adult-oriented material including provocative and/or explicit dress. 10) Storage of inappropriate materials on the laptop is prohibited. 11) Student activities strictly prohibited as listed in section 4.4 of this handbook. 6.2B) Theft and Destruction of School Property (Laptops) 1) Stealing/Robbery: Students involved in stealing or robbery or in possession of stolen property on school grounds or school transportation could result in a three (3) to 30 days suspension and possible arrest. 2) Property Damage: Students involved in the willful destruction or defacing of school property or the property of others could result in three (3) to 30 days suspension and/or cost of damage. (The offenders parents/guardians will be held responsible for repairing or replacing damaged school property per NRS ). 6.3) Consequences for Violations The consequences listed below are examples of possible consequences. Teachers and Administrators will determine the appropriate consequences based on the severity of the infraction and the student s history of infractions. Possible consequences may include but are not limited to the following: 1) Loss of laptop privileges a) Restriction to school day use only (no take home privilege) b) Restriction to the use of a school desktop, or laptop computer c) Restriction to use only in classroom under direct teacher supervision d) Technology use prohibited 2) Site Administration will determine progressive discipline 11

12 6.4) Reteaching Digital Citizenship Students who violate Digital Citizenship or who are found lacking Digital Etiquette will be required to complete the corresponding skill of the Digital Passport curriculum before being reissued their laptop. Learning With Your Laptop 7. USING YOUR LAPTOP AT SCHOOL Laptops provided by the school are intended for use at school each day. In addition to regular teacher expectations, the laptops can be used for school messages, announcements, calendars, and schedules. Students are responsible for bringing their laptop to class, when requested by their teacher. 7.1) Red Zones and Red Times Each school will identify Red Zones and Red Times when and where the laptop is not to be used. Each school will notify students of Red Zones and Red Times and may change them accordingly. 7.2) Electronic Devices Left at Home If a laptop is left or forgotten at home, students are responsible for checking out a loaner laptop from their homeroom teacher if available. Students are required to get the course work completed as if they had their laptop present. Students who repeatedly (as determined by any staff member) leave or forget their laptop at home will be required to leave their laptop at school and check it in/out from their homeroom teacher the beginning and end of each day. 7.3) Laptop Undergoing Repair Loaner laptops may be issued to students when their device is in need of repair. There may be a delay in getting a laptop should the school not have enough to loan. Any laptops needing repair must be turned into the homeroom teacher. 7.4) Charging Your Laptop s Battery Laptops must be brought to school each day with a fully charged battery. Students need to remove the sleeve before charging each evening. Students must bring their chargers/adaptors to school for charging throughout the day. Students who repeatedly (as determined by any staff member) fail to bring their laptop properly charged to school will be required to leave their laptop at school. 7.5) Photos Photos that include, but are not limited to, presence of guns, weapons, pornographic materials, inappropriate language, alcohol, drug, gang related symbols, or pictures will result in disciplinary actions. Passwords protecting a 12

13 screensaver/background photo are not to be used. 7.6) Sound, Music, Games, or Programs Sound must be muted at all times unless permission is obtained from the teacher for instructional purposes. All software, applications, games, music, videos, etc. must be district approved/provided. Personal ear buds are encouraged. 7.7) Home Internet Access Students are allowed to set up wireless networks on their laptop. Students are not required to have wireless access at home. 8. MANAGING YOUR FILES & SAVING YOUR WORK 8.1) Saving to the Laptop Students are encouraged to save their work to Google Drive or their Edmodo Backpack. Google Drive has 15GB of free space for your work. It is the student s responsibility to ensure that work is not lost due to mechanical failure or accidental deletion. Laptop malfunctions are not an acceptable excuse for not submitting work. Teachers will instruct students on methods of managing work. 8.2) Network Connectivity Carson City School District makes no guarantee that their network will be up and running 100% of the time. In the rare case that the network is down, Carson City School District will not be responsible for lost or missing data. 9. SOFTWARE ON THE LAPTOP 9.1) Originally Installed Software The software/applications originally installed by Carson City School District must remain on the laptop in usable condition and be easily accessible at all times. From time to time, the school may add software/applications. Periodic checks of a student s laptop will be made to ensure that students have not removed required software/applications. 9.2) Additional Software Students will not add software/applications to their assigned laptop. 13

14 9.3) Inspection Students may be selected at random to provide their laptop for inspection. Laptops are the property of Carson City School District. Any staff member may confiscate any laptop at any time for safety and security purposes. 9.4) Procedure for Re-loading Software If technical difficulties occur or illegal software, non-carson City School District installed applications are discovered, the laptop will be re-formatted. Carson City School District does not accept responsibility for the loss of any software or documents deleted due to a re-format and/or re-image. 9.5) Software upgrade Upgrade versions of licensed software/applications are available from time to time. Students may be required to check in their laptop for periodic updates. 14

If loss or damage occurs, the student and parent/guardian are responsible for the repair or replacement of the device. 18 Carson City School District Student and Edmodo Permission Slip and Edmodo accounts have been created for Carson City School District students for instructional purposes. Access to accounts is a privilege and responsibility for the student. As an instructional tool, student accounts are monitored and controlled by the classroom teacher. Teacher responsibilities include: 1. Enable and disable student accounts as needed for instructional reasons. 2. Access and read student interactions for monitoring appropriate student use. 3. Supervise student use of the accounts. Student responsibilities include: 1. Never put personal information online (phone number, age, home address). 2. Use and Edmodo in an appropriate manner. 3. Return a signed parental consent form before accounts will be issued. 4. Adhere to the Carson City School District Acceptable Use Policy (AUP). 5. Have a signed AUP on file at school of attendance. This account is provided as a support for instruction and learning. Consequently, any and all messages are open for review by the teacher. In maintaining and securing the system, technology support personnel have access to the message traffic. I will follow these guidelines, apply common sense, and digital citizenship when using technology. 1. Messages will not contain profanity, obscene comments, or sexually explicit materials. 2. Messages will not contain racist, sexist, religious, or generation derogatory content. Respect for members of the school and general community is expected and should be expressed. 3. User identity will be accurately reflected in all message traffic. 4. No virus, program, or addition will be introduced into the system, which alters its operation, destroys, or damages data or renames or relocates files. 5. Passwords, or other access codes, are not to be shared by student users. No student is authorized to use any other person s password or account. 6. Overall message volume or routing should not absorb a disproportionate amount of system resources.
