3 Family Farming is the agricultural activities in small-scale farming, in which a farm is owned and operated by family members, the farmland is inherited from one generation to the next, and the farmers produce agricultural products for their own consumption, and sell the rest to generate income and capital. Therefore, the process of family farming is usually safe and sustainable in terms of resource management and utilization.

4 Importance of Family Farming About 43% of the active world population is employed in agriculture. More than 53% are in developing countries.

5 Challenges in Family Farming Farmers not having enough land for farming. Farmers not having adequate capitals at hands to invest in the whole farming cycle. They have a lot of debts. Not enough knowledge of modern agricultural technologies. More risk and severity of disasters, like flood, drought, unusual rain, soil erosion, insects, pests, diseases and epidemics, etc. Reduced family size. The elderly stay home, while young people seek jobs outside the farms. Not enough extra income from other activities, like food processing, handicrafts, etc.

6 How to meet those challenges? Use small land in a more effective and efficient way. Organized into cooperatives or clubs. Cooperate with local leaders and local experts, when government authority wants to build or manage big, medium and small irrigation systems in the areas. Use alternative energy, like water energy, solar energy, biofuel and biogas.

7 Transfer technology and knowledge to the farmers to promote less use of chemicals, to reduce costs and to increase productivity. Introduce new skills, suitable for the people in each locality, for example, wood weaving, mulberry growing for silk worm production, textile weaving, etc. Grow a variety of crops. Raise animals. Educate farmers and their children on new techniques and alternative ways of agriculture, for example, hydroponic planting without soil, soil improvement, etc.

8 Educate farmers on health hygiene, sanitation and nutrition for good health and nutrition. Emphasize preventive measures like immunization, communicable disease prevention, etc. Set up rice banks. The first one was initiated by His Majesty 40 years ago, to help small-scale farmers. The interest was a small amount of rice. Set up cattle banks. This was also His Majesty s initiative for the farmers to borrow cattle for labor. The baby cattle are returned to the banks to give to other farmers.
