1 Teaching The School aims to provide an inspiring and enriching educational experience for students and staff by teaching from a world leading research and scholarship base. It will continue to develop integration across all aspects of the subject, with project based studio teaching providing the focus. It will provide students with a full appreciation of the history and theory of architecture and the role of architecture in meeting today s societal needs. The curriculum will integrate the low carbon and sustainability agenda into teaching with particular attention to resource use and an appreciation of new materials for building construction. The School will develop its IT teaching in the BSc and March courses and ensure the School has adequate space and IT resources to support its teaching, in order to meet the needs of professional graduates. The School will encourage effective student led and autonomous learning and to continue its established record of professional and personal development planning which is referred to as reflective practice It will continue to support the studio ethos in the school and to find ways to increase the amount and quality of space in the Bute Building. It will aim to continue to produce students who are valued by the profession and who can compete successfully in the economic climate of today and the future, with skills that are valued by the architectural profession and transferable to other sectors. It will engage with industry in these challenging economic times to ensure its teaching courses remain attractive and relevant. It will continue to maintain entry standards to its undergraduate courses at a high level, whilst widening access, in particular from the region, for example, through awareness raising activities such as the recent public engagement events, exhibitions and workshops. It will pursue the focused development of its Masters programmes. It has developed a suite of taught Masters programmes, some in collaboration with other Schools, with a total student cohort of 96.5 FTE (2010/2011). It is analysing the feasibility of considering introducing new Masters courses in the subject areas of Conservation and Materials in order to complement its research aspirations in these fields. It will explore new income streams, for example, through international summer schools, international collaborations in teaching and research and CPD courses. Funding for a business development support administration resource to support these activities (from its innovation and engagement bid) has been recently secured. It aims to further internationalise teaching links for staff and students, with China, USA, Switzerland, Chicago, and the British University in Dubai. 1
