2 Learning Center Instructional Support Lab A student recharges at consultant Rebekah Shumack s charging station. The Learning Center/Instructional Support Lab (LC/ISL) Learning and Study Strategies Workshops We visited 10 Education 1220 classes and 20 English Composition classes discussing various study strategies and the importance of collaboration with LC tutors in the learning process. Writing tutors offered four workshops on citations. LC/ISL staff members presented at five new student orientations and one Warhawk Welcome. Writing for Success LC Writing consultants offered eight hours of real-time or mock tutoring sessions for WFDI faculty, two hours of mock tutoring sessions for WID Intern training, and have cooperated in eight hours of WID Intern observation training. Online Tutoring for Online Courses In addition to offering 12 hours of asynchronous writing tutoring weekly for students enrolled in online courses requiring writing, the LC/ISL projects a date of January 2013 for synchronous online math tutoring for online Finite math.
3 Work in Action Mission Statement To actively support an academic environment in which students, faculty, staff, and administrators address the intellectual development of all learners in order to help them succeed in their academic courses at AUM. To serve as the central comprehensive learning center that cultivates intellectual development through course and discipline specific assistance in math, science, accounting, and writing. To that end, the LC provided over 5,540 individual consultations in , and the ISL provided 4,699 hours of tutoring, giving students the academic assistance to allow them to succeed at AUM. The LC/ISL will continue its efforts to infuse the climate at AUM with sound, cognitive science-based learning practices as we work with students, faculty, and staff.
4 Campus Collaborations The LC/ISL works with various AUM units to increase the level of learning and the quality of instruction at AUM. These collaborations include our joint efforts with the following: The Writing Across the Curriculum initiative to demonstrate for faculty in the work of writing tutors and in training Writing in the Disciplines interns, and provide tutoring for these courses. Advising and Academic Enhancement to provide tutoring for Summer Bridge students and to discover other courses where content specific tutoring may aid in retention. The Athletics Department to encourage use of the centers, especially for athletes who speak English as a second language. Information Technology Services to develop online new faculty orientation, to provide in-house asynchronous online writing tutoring for students taking online courses, and to develop tutoring for online Finite Mathematics. The English Composition program to provide support for students in all composition courses and in providing support for AUMWrites! The Freshman Mathematics program to provide support for at-risk students in remedial math courses as well as in Pre- Calculus and Finite Mathematics. To develop templates for tutoring future online mathematics courses. The Office of Institutional Effectiveness to assess the effectiveness of LC consultations. The Fine Arts Department to create wall art for the LC and for Taylor Center. The Sustainability Committee to provide a You Plant It session for Earth Day activities. Housing and Residence Life to provide tutoring in North Commons for those who live on campus, to provide tutoring assistance in programs such as Professors n Pajamas, to provide a new Final Exam All Nighter, and to prepare for another branch location in the new dormitory. Education 1220 faculty to deliver tutoring information and study strategies information to students enrolled in their classes. The Departments of Mathematics to proctor exams for online courses. The School of Business to provide content specific tutoring in accounting, finance, and business statistics. The Center for Disability Services to provide various presentations during College Prep Week, proctoring, note taking, and special services. The Counseling Center to provide learning strategies support and to help in meeting the counseling needs of our students through referrals. Continuing Education to provide English language tutoring for Intensive Language students. The Dean of Student Affairs to provide Goodwyn Hall Doughnuts and Coffee during mid-terms and finals. The Assistant Dean of Student Affairs to provide learning strategies education to fraternity and sorority members. The Common Reading Program to encourage reading across the campus. Advocacy and Accountability Be You Day.
5 Tutoring Student Feedback: I actually learned something about grammar. It s my biggest struggle and [my tutor] helped me to understand it. Overall, very good. Always had a smile and was eager to help me with difficult problems. I strongly felt like [my tutor] cared about my assignment. I was worried to get some revisions; however, it really helped me! The tutor was helpful in explaining how to make my essay flow. [My tutor] aided me in making my argument clear. [Tutor] is amazing at helping me understand what s going on in math. Makes it so much easier than it seems. Excellent tutor! Faculty Feedback: Thank you, thank you for all the help the LC gives students at AUM. You make my job easier and provide students with a comfortable environment to learn and ask questions. The Learning Center rocks!
