1 Where do I go for an Assessment? This is one of the most often asked questions we hear. We have put a list of professionals together who provide these services. Students may also be assessed through their local school boards for Learning Disabilities (), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (), and Central Auditory Processing Disorder (CAP). Parents can also learn more about the different assessments by contacting our Resource Centre. The Learning Disabilities Association of Durham Region does not endorse any particular method, therapy, treatment, institution or professional; however, we do endorse the right for you to know about them. Paediatrician is a trained medical doctor specializing in pediatrics. provides medical services to infants, children and adolescents and is trained in overall growth and development including motor, sensory, cognitive and behavioural development. is covered by OHIP but some Pediatricians are now charging for non-billable services. Psychiatrist can diagnose and other disorders as Oppositional Defiance Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder etc. is a trained medical doctor who specialized in Psychiatry and as such can prescribe medication. is covered by OHIP but some Psychiatrists are now charging for non-billable services. some psychologists have extensive training and/or experience in assessment and counseling of children and adults. 2 should provide, as part of the assessment, suggestions regarding accommodations and remediation of academic, behavioural, social and emotional problems. are not medical doctors, cannot prescribe medication and are not covered by OHIP; however some extended healthcare plans cover part of their services. 11 Social Worker assist individuals, families and communities to resolve problems that affect their day-to-day lives help identify the source of stress or difficulty, make assessments, mediate between conflicts, offer various forms of counselling and therapy, and help people to develop coping skills and find effective solutions to their problems People consult social workers when they are going through a difficult period in their personal, family and/or work life. Social work is unique among the helping professions because it focuses on people's problems within the context of their families, communities and workplaces. Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) are professionals trained to assess and treat cognitive concerns related to language comprehension, language expression, verbal problem solving, pragmatics (social communication), auditory memory and phonological processing. are also trained to assess and treat concerns related to swallowing, articulation of speech sounds, fluency (stuttering) and voice quality.
