2 Conference information Registration A registration form is attached or you can go to the website at and follow the links to the conference information. Registrations can be sent in by , mail or by fax. Payment Methods Checks can be mailed or credit cards can be taken over the phone. PayPal is available on the website. Please do not mail cash. Purchase orders for organizations can be arranged. Continuing Education Credits Each session is worth 5 Continuing Education Credits through the Saskatchewan College of Paramedics. As sessions are subject to change, credits are pending College approval. Parking Car pooling is recommended where possible. Parking is limited at City Hospital. There is a paid lot with limited parking and there is metered street parking in the neighborhood. As it is a weekend the paid lot should not be too full by the time we start. Lunches/Breaks Breaks and lunches will be provided on site as part of your registration. Displays A number of companies have expressed interest in setting up displays for you to view during breaks and lunches. List three societal trends influencing the depiction of science, health and medical care in television programs from the 1950 s to the 21st century; 2. Name five (5) early television programs the themes of which reflected an idealized view of medicine and physicians; 3. List three (3) constraints imposed by early television contracts on the depiction of physicians and their work; 4. Suggest five (5) influences of the program Emergency! on the development of EHS in western societies; 5. Suggest five (5) changes that occurred in the depiction of physicians, medicine or EHS over the past 50 years of television story telling; 6. Review the signs & symptoms of different types of street drugs 2. Identify treatment options for different types of street drugs 3. Formulate ways to manage intoxicated patients 4. Name at least five (5) major contributors to the progress of the air ambulance and EHS aeromedical system development; 2. Identify at least one (1) key component of early research that permitted high speed air/space travel and the delivery of health care in the unique environment of the atmosphere and space; 3. List at least 10 major achievements during her lifetime of The Mother of the Air Ambulance, Mlle. Marie Marvingt; 4. List five (5) historical milestones in the development of current day aeromedical services a Jon Schmidt, RN 3b Summertime Myths from the ER Dr Jim Cross Participants will be able to recognize and manage summertime emergencies such as near drowning, lightning strikes, heat stroke, summertime infectious diseases (e.g. hand foot and mouth disease), insect bites, anaphylaxis and waterskiing injuries Closing Session Death of Motherhood and Apple Pie, Dr. Jim Cross Participants will understand the difference between "common sense/logic" and evidence based medicine in prehospital care utilizing examples such as the MAST suit, IV fluids in penetrating torso trauma, ipecac in overdoses and many more example M.D. Ambulance Professional Development Page 4
5 Faculty April 30, May 1 Dr. Ron Stewart Dr Stewart holds teaching professorships in Anaesthesia, Emergency Medicine, Community Health and Epidemiology. A former resident in emergency medicine at Los Angeles County Hospital (where he treated Charles Manson), Prof Stewart earned the soubriquet Doc Hollywood while acting as a consultant to the TV series Emergency. In 1978, Prof Stewart moved to Pennsylvania, where he served as the founding head of the emergency medicine department at the University of Pittsburgh. He was Minister of Health for Nova Scotia between 1993 and He is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Order of Canada and the Order of Nova Scotia. In 2006, the University of Pittsburgh endowed the Ronald D. Stewart Chair in Emergency Medicine, and in 2008, the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) recognized Prof Stewart as a Hero of Emergency Medicine. Dr Robbie Drummond Dr. Drummond is the Medical Advisor for EMS for the Saskatoon Health Region Jim Arnold, SFPS Jim is a Fire Service Instructor with Saskatoon Fire and Protectice Services. He is currently in charge of Rescue Training and has been with the department for 21 years. Dr. Jon Witt Dr. Witt is an Emergency Physician and Trauma Team Leader as Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon as well as the Medical Director for Saskatchewan Air Ambulance. Stan Wiebe, RN Stan is a flight nurse with Saskatchewan Air Ambulance. Dr. Jim Cross Dr. Cross is the SMO for Prince Albert Parkland Health Region, Chief of Emergency Medicine for 16 years, and is previous Medical Director for both Ground and Air Ambulance in Saskatchewan. Dr. Cross may challenge you, he may frustrate you, but he will entertain and enlighten you. Jon Schmidt, RN Jon is the Nurse Manager for Saskatoon City Hospital.
