3 Learning Outcomes Outline of Content Learning and Teaching Methods 1. LO1 Describe the security threats facing modern network infrastructures 2. LO2 Secure network device access and implement AAA on network devices 3. LO3 Mitigate threats and attacks to networks using various techniques 4. LO4 Implement secure network management and reporting and administer effective security policies Security threats facing modern network infrastructures Securing network device access Implementation of Authentication, Authorisation and Accounting (AAA) on network devices Mitigation of threats to networks using Access Control Lists (ACLs) Implementation of secure network management and reporting Mitigation of common Layer 2 attacks Interactive teaching will be the primary teaching method, which will enable one on one contact, group work and greater group interaction and cohesion. [LO1 6] Group computer simulation eg Cisco Packet Tracer will form the context for practical application of the material taught. This will be used for example based learning, problem based learning, practical design and testing.[lo2 6] Group work will enable students to engage in class activities encouraging optimal use of the individual s preferred learning style while developing the students ability to work together as a team. [LO2 6] Assessment Valid/Reliable Formative: Laboratory manual containing small assignments that are incremental in difficulty to develop student knowledge, and skills in self direction. [LO2 6] Summative assessments: Skills based Exam 40% to assess all the work learned from the laboratory manual, and put it together in a realworld scenario under high pressure conditions. [LO3 6] Online Tests & Exam 20% to test overall knowledge of the course. [LO1 6] (Cisco requirement) Resources Required Text, Web links, Equipment, Computer Labs etc as applicable This course will make use of varied resources including: Cisco Online Curriculum emit Blackboard nz Networking devices Computer laboratory Computer software There are no prescribed texts for this course, but a laboratory manual will be provided to students.

It is used as a source of information and news, for revision, for both formative and summative exercises, and other on line activities. A wide range of resource material is uploaded for use by the students. The LMS is used as an assessment tool and to promote and reinforce learning. Written Exam 40% to test overall knowledge of the course using detailed explanations. [LO1 6] To pass this course, the student must achieve a minimum mark of 50% overall and attempt all assessments.
