3 Learning Outcomes Outline of Content Learning and Teaching Methods 1. Demonstrate knowledge of modern network operating systems 2. Recognise the importance of networks and the internet, and demonstrate modern industry practice for networking. 3. Analyse and describe network protocol models and the network layers. Network operating systems such as Microsoft Windows and Linux. Computer networks with servers and industry practice for networking. Network system software, devices, services, media and operation. Addressing and naming schemes, application layer, TCP/IP, transport layer, network layer, subnet masks, OSI Data link layer, physical layer. Interactive teaching will be the primary learning method, which encourages students to interact with the tutor and peers during practical lab exercises and activities as students work in groups. [LO1 4] Interactive blended delivery is the key learning method, implemented as a combination of the following: Online Study Materials which can be accessed by students at anytime, from any computer at their own pace within a specified time frame. [LO1 5] Assessment Valid/Reliable Formative assessment: Feedback is continuous throughout the course with on line interactive test questions on the LMS, group activities and lab progress feedback. This facilitates the opportunity for question and answer dialogue (both staffstudent and studentstudent). It also provides constructive feedback on an ongoing basis. 4 4. Plan, install and configure network operating systems and network services to given specifications. 5. Manage and maintain network operating systems and network services. Application layer protocols (HTTP, DNS, DHCP, SMTP, Telnet, FTP). Network operating system software backup, upgrades and patches, hardware upgrades, system administration, threats & mitigation measures, network performance & management, troubleshooting. Problem based learning is a key teaching strategy, where students are given structured problems / tasks to solve, and through which they intrinsically develop knowledge, skills and professional attitudes. [LO1 5] Simulation exercises are done before practical assembly of hardware during laboratory sessions. [LO1 5] The LMS functions as the home page of the course. It is used as a source of information and news, for revision, for both formative and summative exercises, and other on line activities. A wide range of resource material is uploaded for use by the students. The LMS is used as an assessment tool and to promote and reinforce learning. formative assessment of student progress. [LO 1 5] Summative assessment: Practical Assessments 30% Students will work in groups on practical exercises, in which they will have to learn from guide lines, then investigate and solve authentic computer client server problems. Two practical lab tests (2x 5% =10%) will be used to provide ongoing feedback on lab activities. Laboratory in which students carry out practical computer client server activities. Usage of LMS and the Internet will also develop students knowledge of and competency in computer technology. One practical skill exam (20%) will be used to assess student s overall practical ability. 5 2&3] Tests 30% One written test (10%) on authentic computer client server problems will be used to assess student s ability. One online test (20%) will be used to assess student s understanding of computer client server technologies. [LO 1 5] Written Exam 40% One written exam to test overall knowledge of the course using detailed explanations. [LO 1 5] To pass this course, the student must achieve a minimum mark of 50% overall and attempt all assessments.
