2 Artists in Schools Program 1. General Information The Artists in Schools Program is funded by the Tasmanian Department of Education for Tasmanian government schools. Applications for the Artists in Schools Program are called annually for projects commencing in the following school year. 2. Aim The Artist in Schools Program grant provides funding to assist with the engagement of professional practicing artist/s to work with students and teachers on school-based projects. 3. Objectives Artists in Schools: promotes the value of the arts exposes students and teachers to a wide range of innovative art forms allows students to observe professional practicing artist/s and the arts process at work. 4. Priority Areas for 2014 Applicants are asked to consider one or more of the following cross-curriculum priorities for 2013: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures Asia and Australia s engagement with Asia Sustainability 5. Eligibility Artists in Schools Program grants are available to all government schools K 12. School networks are encouraged to submit applications. Grants will be awarded up to the value of $5000 per project. 6. Funding of Successful Applications Money will be devolved to schools in the new financial year (i.e. after July 2014). Schools will need to consider this in their application planning. 7. Selecting an Artist/s Consideration is given to applications across all art forms that are outlined in the proposed Australian Arts Curriculum: Dance, Drama, Media, Music and Visual Arts. When developing their project, schools may wish to consult with organisations that will assist them in shaping their proposal and sourcing appropriate artist/s. Applicants are encouraged to develop their submission in conjunction with their chosen artist/s. Grants will not be devolved to applications that are not able to nominate a preferred artist/s. this version is the most recent. P a g e 2

Developing a Project Schools are encouraged to think creatively about how they might manage the project as either a concentrated program, perhaps over several weeks or on a number of days spread throughout the school term. Examples of project ideas could include: costume design; jewellery /objects; circus performance; digital art; photography; puppetry; glass; installation art; music; poetry; sculpture; writing. 9. Selection Criteria and Selection Process Priority will be given to school applications that explore art forms not currently available to students and teachers and that best address the priority criteria. A panel is convened to short list applications. The application must include the following items and be signed off by all required parties: Application Form Artist/s biography Budget proposal. Further information may be sought to clarify applications before the final selection. Schools will be informed of their selection status prior to the end of the calendar year. 10. Evaluation and Reporting Schools are required to submit a final report before the end of the school calendar year for their Artists in Schools project. Documentation could include: a written project evaluation photos any media clippings school/student quotes artist/s feedback A project acquittal is also required. 11. Project Responsibilities 1. The School is responsible for: Contributing to the funding of the project. This may be in the form of financial aid, teaching /relief support and in kind donations, e.g. parent help, materials Providing the artist/s with a designated workspace for the duration of the residency Administration, communication and student organisation regarding the project. 2. The Project Coordinator is responsible for: All contact with the Artist/s this version is the most recent. P a g e 3
4 Scaffolding teacher learning, student learning and support material development as part of the project brief Ensuring publicity and promotion of the DoE program, the artist/s and the project through a variety of mixed media Ensuring signed and collated permission to use student work and images forms. Photographs-and-Student-Work-Samples.aspx Ensuring the project evaluation and acquittal report is completed and sent to the project administrator by the due date. 3. The Artist/s is responsible for: Maintaining the schedule for completion of the project Working with small groups of students (but does not have duty of care for this group) Working the agreed number of project hours as contracted 12. The Artist/s Agreement The artist/s agreement is a formal contract that outlines the requirements for an artist/s to work alongside a school on an agreed project. The Artists in Schools agreement is signed between the Crown, represented by the Principal, and the selected artist/s. The DoE does not deem the artist/s an employee for the purposes of the Tasmanian Workers Compensation legal liability law. The artist/s is not insured by the DoE for professional indemnity and must take his or her own policy of insurance should he or she wish to be insured for any such claims. The artist/s is responsible for his/her own workers compensation insurances as required under applicable state law The artist/s may be required to provide proof of their current insurance policy prior to commencing the program. The artist/s will need to complete a police check prior to working with students in a school. The funding agreement employs the selected artist/s for a minimum of 10 days at a rate of $250 per day. A minimum materials allowance of $500 per project must also be provided. The artist/s will comply with the provisions of the Code of Conduct established by virtue of Section 9 of the State Service Act 2000 (annexed and marked with the letter A) at all times whilst [he/she] is participating in the Artists in Schools Program. DoE owns all equitable and propriety right, titles and interest in intellectual property, including moral right, to all works generated during the course of the Program. The artist/s contract can be terminated at any time if there is a breach of any of the agreed conditions. The artist/s also has a responsibility to contact the Department as soon as possible if there are any circumstances that may result in legal action being taken. this version is the most recent.
